Looking for info on beginning photography classes/where to start

I have been laid off from work for over a year now and I don't want to go back to what I was doing before (General Manager of a hotel.) I love being a SAHM and want to find something that would work around my family's schedule. I love taking pictures and have always been interested in photography, but my problem is that I don't know where to start to learn more about professional picture taking.

Can anyone point me in the right direction on where I can start to learn more about photography without having to go to a private college for an education. I know this isn't going to happen overnight, but it is something that I am very interested in starting and making a career go of it.

I live in the North Metro and would like to stick around this side of town for classes, etc but I am willing to travel too.

Thanks in advance for all your wonderful advice.

Hi Emily! I'm a photographer, totally self taught. I did work at a studio for a few years in college as side job and it did teach me alot about lighting, but learning my camera's was all self taught.

First you need a good camera and lens. Head to National Camera (Maple Grove) and check them out. AT the stage you are at, you want a good camera but nothing too advanced. Both Canon and Nikon have great entry level DSLR's for a reasonable price. I use Nikon, the Nikon D80 is a perfect camera for someone just starting out.

Then, head to Barnes and Nobles and pick up a copy of 'Understanding Exposure' by Bryan Peterson. It will teach you how ot use your camera in Manual mode, how to properly set exposure manually to be creative in your picture taking. Its very in depth but also very easy to understand.

I'm in the North Metro too, if you want to message me to chat more, I'm more than happy to!
