We are purchasing a home in the NW Hills area and are planning a pretty major renovation. Our contractor recommended we use an architect to design the plans. (We are relocating a laundry room and a bathroom to expand the kitchen and master bedroom.) We called a couple of larger firms and their rates were very expensive. If anyone knows of a good architect that might be willing to consider this project, we would love the reference.
There are sooo many small and solo practices in town, and at least some of them are not very busy right now, which means their prices should be more reasonable. I recommend you start at the AIA Austin chapter website, http://www.aiaaustin.org. Go to the homes tour links at the bottom and browse around. When you see work to your liking, see who the architect was and go to that website. We used Barley + Pfeiffer for a major remodel years ago and were very happy with their work.
Hi there!
It sounds like your home's location falls within the city of austin's Residential Design and Compatibility Standards Ordinance Boundary which means you will most likely be REQUIRED by the city to have your drawings signed and sealed by an Architect, Engineer or certified building designer in order to obtain a building permit.
Here is a link to the city's website for your reference.

We live in Balcones Village and are about to undergo a very similar renovation. Expanding the kitchen into the HUGE laundry/utility area. We are using Adrienne Perlman Designs. Adrienne is fantastic and reasonably priced. And she has a keen eye on keeping the budget under control. You can contact her at [email protected].
Hello Holly,
I am an architect, my husband daughter and I moved from NY a year an a half ago and I have been taking care of my 2 year old daughter since then. While I was in NY I worked for Robert A.M. Stern Architects for 8 years, my last project was Michael Eisner's house in Malibu, CA. I don't have experience in renovations since I have always designed projects from scratch, but it shouldn't be a problem it is just a question of taking the right dimensions. My husband is an architect too and he works for PSP I believe the biggest arch. firm in Austin so we can ask for his opinion too.
Let me know if you are interested. My name is Corina Rugeroni, my e-mail [email protected] my number is (917)922-1775.
Thank you.
Corina
hI hOLLY,
My husband is an architect and has a solo practice.
He does remodels and will give you a consultation up front for free. His office is on Burnet Road just south of Koenig Lane. Check out his website at

He has been in the AIA homes tour for three years. One of those projects was a remodel and the other two were new construction.
Best of Luck!
