my niece who is now 17 yrs old has always had a problem with her ears getting infected and running like your sons. this went on from the time she was 6 months old until about 6 months ago. she didn't have tubes put in her ears but we finally found a dr. who knew what to do to help her. her dr. said it was sinuses. everything was so congested and backed up it was coming out of her ears. she was sent to an ear nose and throat dr. who prescribed a med. to soften the wax in her ear so he could dig it out of her ear. she was legally deaf in her right ear. she was prescribed allegra, nasonex and astelin. she has to use these daily to keep everything running smoothly but so far no more ears running and no more pain. if your son has ear problems with a cold or head cold it never hurts to have this looked into.
hey girl
i go through the same thing i have a 3 year old boy that has tubes in his ears twice now that drainage stuff is aweful but just look at it this way at least that stuff is coming out and not staying in
but i must tell you i just had to take my little one back to the dr and he was going through the nasty drainage so on so on and then his ear started to bleed me and my husband was up until midnight keeping an eye on him come to find out the next day when we got him to the dr he had a very bad infection and the one ear drum had busted and of course they say that it is ok if they do bust feels better anyways now it just has to heal up but his ears do drain and in some ways that is better at least its not staying in behind the ear drum and causeing pressure its just aweful because you clean them up and then its right back i know it seems like a long time but as years goes by they should grow out of it but it might take until the age of 5 to get them growed out of it i hope everything goes well for you just keep an eye on him and those drops they gave you really do help all just a time thing i would def. take him back and get him checked by his dr. like i said my sons tubes are still in and ended up with two ear infections and his right ear drum busted you might get a second oppion just my thought
yes, this is normal. just think of all that inside without
the tubes! Most children grow out of this due to the shape
of the ear, but not always as in the case of my son, first born,
had tubes x3 and his adnoids taken out at age 2,3 and almost 5
did great and he is now 23yrs old.
good luck to you, Bonny, in NC.
Yes, My daughter who was born on 4/19/07, had ear tubes placed in her ears in February as well and the doctor is correct, the tubes allow the ears to drain instead of the fluid being built up in the middle ear. I know it is yucky but they feel much better with their ears draining. The ear drps really do work wonders. I have had to use it a few times since her procedure and finally her ears are clear.
Good luck!

The same thing happened to my son. It looked like green slim was running from his ears. That does mean that the tubes are working. He may need another round of antibiotics to clear everything out. My son needed tubes, drops and meds. But it did eventually clear up. Hope everything works out!!! Good Luck!!
Yes, this is so very normal. My child had tubes put in when he was almost 2 after many rounds of antibiotics. After the tubes were put in they seemed to drain alot but it really does mean they are working. It does look very gross and smells funky for the lack of a better word. But if it starts draining that means that he won't get as sick with the infections as he did before. I was so against tubes at first but they were truely a life saver!!!!!!
Thats what the tubes are supposed to do. Euatation tubes are not always long enough so tubes are put in to allow for drainage, However if they start to smell bad or look green or bloody, go back to your ENT as it may be infection, but the drainage is normal. Good Luck
The same happened to my son and the doctor said the same. He said that prior to tubes, the fluid stayed in his ear and got infected. The fluid draining means the stuff is getting out! It's been two years and happens less frequently, but still occasionally.
my son is having the same problem he had tubes placed in on june 30 .he now has a cold a cough that mainly occurs at night.yes i am seeing this thick yellowish and crusty type fluid draining from his ears now as i speak .i took him to the dr and he told me the same thing that the tubes are just doing its job that what tubes are for to prevent fluid buildup.i was told not worry but i was a bit concern too on how this draining should last.i did some research and found out that this may last fo and several weeks before the draining stop hope this was helpful to you.wish you all the best for you and your son.
Well I have an almost 8yr boy and he has had 3 sets of tubes and he has about 8 or more ear infections every yr and the ent’s ( we’ve seen around 12 of them) have said it was normal for them to drain and smell. He has had ruptured ear drums a bunch and he has been on every med you could think of. I understand about you worrying I still do.
