I don't live in the Tulsa are yet. We are relocating and I have one child in HS, a freshman. So, what I need help with is finding him a good school. We are considering Jenks, Bixby and Owasso. Can you guys tell me what you know of about the schools and make any recommendations??
Thanks for all your help!!
Michelle,
THose are 3 great schools. However, where are you moving from? These schools are graduating over 700 and sometimes over 1000 per year. Have you considered Tulsa? Tulsa has one of the best magnet school programs in the country. Look on their website about their magnet schools. Booker T washington and Edison would be my pics, in that order. Tulsa graduates between 150 and 400 per class. We where counciled by an administrator at one of the largest schools in the area Union. We ask him what he would do if his kids where in school today. He said " Unless you are CERTAIN your child is in the TOp 1% of a sport, art, music or academics I WOULD NOT got to Union, Broken Arrow, Bixby, Owasso or Jenks. They are so large now that kids that aren't plugged in to a special area are lost in the crowd. I began to really give that some thought and realized how wise that was. My sister graduated from Union and she played varisty softball. This was 25 years ago. there where 16 spots on the team and 175 girls tried out. Some of the best girls in the area that she played against in summer ball Didn't even make the team. and union's class size has DOUBLED since then. Have you given some of the smaller areas some thought? Like CLaremore, Seqouyah (in the claremore area) or Berryhill? They are all nice subs that are much smaller. Have you considered private school. I would personally recomend considering Wright Christian they are in North east tulsa on the way to Owasso. They are preK thru 12 and VERY REASONABLE> Less than $4700 last year for high school. THey have sports, great academics. A National Robotics team. Drama. I really really love them. Our son went there for 4 years and would still be there but he was diagnosed with some rather unique learning differences and now attends a school for kids with diagnossed learning diasabilities. Which BTW is fantastic and if you where in need of that let me know. They take care of dyslexia, dysgraphia, add, adhd, asberghers, and any other learning difference that is diagnosed. Please let me know if you need help with other stuff like, drs, dry cleaners, church, realtors etc Deanna
I wish I could completely disagree with the last person who responded, but I can't. My two oldest graduated from Owasso High School. I was not impressed. We moved here and was told it was one of the best school systems to get into and they are very picky about letting students in. Neither of my children were into sports or music. Just wanted a good education and that was hard to come by. I have an 8 year old and he goes to Riverfield Country Day school, it is close to Jenks, but still listed in Tulsa. They have a great school and small class size. They have sports, music and everything in between. For a private school it has everything and still keeps a small school charm. The choice is yours, read about the schools before you decide. Another private school is in Owasso, Rejoice Christian school. Heard good things about it. I live in Claremore and drive my son to school 36 miles one way each day. Good luck with your decision.
