I just got an assignment with a local DFW Magazine on How to write a will and name a guardian. I'll be interviewing attorneys of course but my editor would also like quotes from area moms who have been down this road. (I can keep your identity anonymous if you prefer.)
I need to feature experiences from each of these camps:
A) moms who drafted their own will
B) moms who used an online software tool
C) moms who hired an attorney.
Tips and stories on how you arrived at choosing your guardian will also be included in a sidebar.
I'm on a tight deadline. Please email if you can talk for a few minutes about your experience.
We used a software program and had it notarized. We named one person as the executor and one as the guardian of the children. We gave everyone a copy and 'announced' it to those we thought might have issues with it. SO far, no issues and we hope that it stands up in the end. We have thought about hiring an attorney but have not done so thus far.
We used an attorney as we learned that people unintentionally disinherit their kids all the time in their wills meaning when the surviving spouse gets re-married, leaves assets to new spouse, etc. We picked friends to be our child's guardian as we felt they had the same values as we do.
