best way to get rid of spiders in the basement

hello ladies. Any one know of a safe efficient way to get rid of spiders in basements. We would love to spend more time downstairs, but I hate spiders and they are always spoiling our fun. Raid? I have kids, so i don't think that is safe for them. Anything I can do outside?

There are these things that you can plug into the wall that emit a quiet chirping noise that seems to keep spiders ouf or our basement (not really centipedes, but regular spiders). We went away for a year and rented out our house. Upon our return I noticed a lot of pretty big spiders. I also noticed that the bug repellers weren't plugged in anymore. Since I plugged them in again, I haven't seen a spider at all. We spend a lot of time in our basement as well.

There are these things you can buy at byerlys or festival foods in the produce section. I believe they only cost a buck a piece ( I just bought a bunch). They are called hedge balls. Its what the old farmers would use to keep beetles and spiders away. they are green balls you can leave in a few corners of each room to ward off insects. I bought a bunch since we have a spider issue in the house. Its been about a week and I already see less spiders. The only concern I would have is if you have a dog....they might think its a ball to play with and so might small children- not sure if its toxic if consumed by pets or children.( my dogs leave them alone and my 7 month old son who crawls hasnt found where I've hid them).
