New Years and Loss

So I've been sort of dreading New Year's (along with Christmas too, but at least that's over) this year because we recently lost my 16 year old niece to suicide in August. She was battling mental illness and has been very depressed for many years. I've mostly been keeping it together but to be honest, after reading another question on the forum today I can't seem to pull myself together and stop crying. My brother has been raising her but she was like a child to me, her mother hasn't been in the picture her entire life and I'll spare you...

3Rd B-day Cake Ideas

Hi Ladies! This is a 2-part question. First, my son will be turning 3 at the end of this month and I'm at a loss as to what themed cake to make him. (I made a baseball for his first b-day and a 3D truck for his 2nd. He's still into cars/trucks, but I really wanted to do something different this year.) Second, I've seen a lot of cakes with fondant icing that are absolutely gorgeous, but I have NO IDEA what fondant is, where you get it, or how you use it. I'd like to give it a try, if anyone has any advice (or recipes, if I have to make it...

20 Mnth Old Does Not Speak

Hi Everyone! Just wondering if anyone has any advice...My son just turned 20 months old and does not speak at all. He just points to what he wants and comes over to get me when he wants to show me something. I read to him very frequently, and he can point to his body parts when asked where they are and can point to objects and animals in books when asked, but does not say anything. It isn't a hearing issue because he follows commands and responds when his name is called. We try to get him to repeat what we say and he just get...

My 22 Month Old Is Barely Speaking

I have a 4 yr old daughter that said her first word at 9 months & knew her phonics by 2. I know this is advanced & I know that boys & 2nd children & children in general are ALL different, but I'm just getting kinda nervous. He definitely understands what we're saying. He says Mommy plain as day (of course) & he's saying animal sounds - like Moo & Arf. And he has a few other words that only US would understand & most of the time - for us to understand - it needs to be in context. He opens his mouth & says "aaaaaahhh" for a long time to tell...

When Do Kids Learn the Abc's?

I know that all children are different, and that you can't compare one with the other. However, I've been getting comments about my daughter and I want to know if people are right or not. My daughter just turned 18 months old. She got a few alphabet toys last Christmas, and plays with them a lot. About a month ago, she started saying some letters and/or their sounds. She can now say the name or sound of 90% of the alphabet. One of her toys has a feature where you push a button and it asks you to find a letter, number, or shape. She...

Looking for Preschool

I just recently moved to Olathe and I'm looking for a preschool. My daughter is 3-1/2, will be 4 in December. She went to a preschool last year 2 days a week from 8:25-11:15 AM, and I'm looking for something similar that doesn't cost an insane amount of money. I'm not looking for daycare, at least not right now. Does anybody know of any good preschools? Thanks.

Words You Just Can't Stand...

Another question got me to thinking about words I just can't stand. Mostly is has to do with weird associations in my brain that may or may not make sense to others! My big one is...(it's hard for me to even type it) "moist"....ugggghhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I strongly dislike it & will even reword my sentence to avoid saying it, i.e. "Wow, this cake isn't dry at all, it tastes great" or "can you hand me a baby wipe (even if it's not technically a baby wipe) or a handy wipe?" rather than say a *&^%) towlette. OK, so that's one of...

Toddler's Fear of Swimming

I recently took my 2 year old son to swimming lessons and he was absolutely terrified. He cried the entire time and clung to me for dear life! I feel the reason for this is that last summer he was standing on some steps of a pool by my husband and he tried to take another step down but missed and fell in. My husband scooped him up very quickly but I am wondering if it scared him enough for him to remember. He cried at bathtime for a while after that but that only lasted a couple of days. I think I just need to slowly work our way back into...
