Tomorrow is my granddaughter's 3rd birthday! She is my son's daughter from a brief fling, and the mom doesn't allow my son to see her unless he brings $$ with him for child support (a whole other story - and between them) - so, anyway, I rarely get to see her. For Step Families Who Don't Use the Word *Step*

I've read responses on this site, where people have said that they don't refer to step relationships in their families as *step.* For instance, a mom might say that she and her husband don't refer to each other's children as step-children. They are simply "their children" or "their family."
