18 Year Old Daughter

Hi, My 18 year old daughter is sleeping overnight with a boyfriend. I have told her that this is not acceptable to me and that it is definetly not ladylike. She told me she would not do it again. Then she turns around and says shes going for a little whild and I call at 4:45 am and she answers the phone(which she did not do before) sleepy like and tells me she is on her way. I tell her what is the point at this time of the morning and that she should have taken her clothes with her. I told her she could not be a tramp around me and...

Wanting to Purchase a Pet

I have an almost 5 yr old and almost 3 yr old. Where we live they won't let us have a cat or dog so I am looking for a smaller animal that the kids are able to hold sometimes and that doesn't stink or get too wild! I was thinking a hamster or gerbil Can you guys give me some advice on this? I have heard so many good things about children learning to care for animals and that it helps also with self esteem that's why I would like one while they are still young and not wait until we can get a dog or cat. Thanks!

Selling House - What Turns a Buyer Off?

We are selling our house & have our first showing tonight with a buyer the realtor claims to be 'very, very interested.' (yah, not getting my hopes up too much. been there, done that, and even if a person is interested i've had about everything go bad in a real estate transaction i think possible. sigh.) Anyway, my question for today is "What turns off a buyer?" What do you look for when you view a house, what turns you sour, and what has you running for the backdoor? We've only looked at one replacement property so far, and I...

Favorite Hot-weather Meals?

In a few days, we'll be hosting a small 40th birthday party for a formerly-estranged family member who has recently emerged from a long, abusive relationship and is just now returning to the family circles. I'm trying to balance the "keep it casual" calmness with "Hey, she's 40. Let's make it nice." And it's going to be 90 degrees for the next 3 days. So standing over a hot grill isn't going to work, and neither is heating the kitchen excessively with the oven. I can do a salad bar, plus cold cuts and stuff like potato salad that I...

Four Hour Curfew for an 18 Year Old?

My 18 year old daughter just turned 18 in March. She has a job of her own, is responsible with it and her chores at home, pays her own phone bill, and even buys any extra items needed around the house which she claims makes her responsible. However, she keeps asking for a permanent curfew of 11 pm no matter when she leaves but my husband and I believe that she shouldn't be staying away from the house for anything longer than four hours at a time; depending on when she leaves do we give her a set curfew. If she leaves at 3 pm then she needs...

The Easter Bunny Isn't Coming to Our House

My husband and I have never done any extraneous gift-giving for our kids on Easter, Valentine's Day, Halloween, etc and I have never though differently of it until I had to spend time defending myself from another parent tonight. They just didn't understand it even after I explained the reasoning. The main reason why I never do anything is because everyone else does. I have one grandmother left on my side of the family and my husband has his mom and one set of grandparents. My kids are the only grandkids at the moment and between the...

Adult Child Living at Home

To pay rent or not to pay rent. That is the question. In brief: had to quit college due to no money. Is 23. Has decided to work as a waiter instead of putting forth any effort in working in his field. Balks at the mere suggesting that he participate in the family and mostly stays in his room playing video games. Don't even think about asking him to take out the trash, pick up his stuff, do the dishes, etc. You'd think I asked him to paint the house or recarpet the family room. We have an open relationship in that I ask him if he's ok,...

"Seeking Moms Who Have Lost a Child"

I'm hoping this request isn't too difficult for others but I'm seeking support from any resource possible. I would love to hear from other moms who have suffered the torturous loss of a child. My precious 13 month old daughter died on January 22nd. She was born with a are degenerative neurological disorder. We were told that she might not make it home from the hospital after birth, and she blessed us with a year of her angelic presence. She struggled with so many physical ailments with strenght, grace and courage. I also have a...
