Seeking Kind Words and Support While Parenting a 12 Year Old

I have written before about my 12 year old son. He will start middle school next year. He has always been kind, loving, and helpful. He does well in school, has a few friends, and is liked by his teachers. Okay, that's the good stuff. I just dropped him off at a friend's house and I feel like crying. He has become so rude and disrespectful to me. (When I write those words I remember my mother saying that to me at that age). I understand that he needs to be independent, etc. and I know that I shouldn't personalize what he says (or...

What to Do with the Piles and Piles of School Artwork?!

I'm desperately trying to get a handle on the chaos in my house that has gotten out of hand since my fourth baby was born in September. I am able to organize most things pretty efficiently, but the one thing I have never been able to figure out how to deal with is the artwork and school papers that come home every day. Now I have 2 kids in preschool, so they are coming home with completed cut and paste exercises, paper bag hand puppets, painted masterpieces, and a ton of projects that relate to the current season or theme of the week. ...

Bed Time for 10 Year Old

I am the mother of 3 healthy, active children. Recently, my husband and I have been in disagreement about what time my oldest (10 years old) should be allowed to stay up at night. I feel 8:45 for the 10 yr old is good since he must be up at 6:45am to get the bus at 7:30 am for school. I am the one who gets the kids ready for bed, reads to them, makes sure teeth are brushed, etc and my husband travels for work often so he is not home. When he is home he is usually watching TV, especially sports in the evening. But, my husband thinks the...

Slumber Party Ideas for 11 Year Old

Hi Moms, Well, I've seen tons of questions and responses about birthday parties, but none about slumber parties. I promised my soon to be 11 year old a slumber party, which we have never done before, and I'm looking for things we can do at home to entertain the girls. I don't want to spend a lot of money, instead just good old fashioned fun around the house. We do have a karaoke machine which should provide a lot of fun. Any ideas on how we can make a good game out of it? I also thought about a spa party. Maybe have each girl bring...

14 Year Old Thinks Rules Too Strict - NO MORE RESPONSES PLEASE. THANKS for ALL!

My 14 year old daughter seems to think a few of my rules are too strict. So, she asked me if I’d get the opinion of other mothers – particularly those I don’t know personally – and who have daughters her age. The rules she disagree with are as followed: My daughter can only attend two outings per month. Note: This includes things like going to the movies, hanging out at the mall, birthday parties, etc. This also includes spending the night away from home. My daughter thinks she should be allowed to do more each month and...

Throwing a Birthday Party for a 13 Year Old Girl!?!?

Hello All! My boss just called and he wants me to put together a birthday party for his daughter who is turning 13. He is a single dad, and is at a loss to what she wants. So since i'm a girl, I guess I should know right? WRONG! I wasn't your "typical" 13 year old, that we have nowadays. I read books, did horsebackriding etc. This girl is going to be picked up in a limo with 10 of her friends and taken to a water park. Afterwards, they are coming to the house, that I have to decorate-but not childishly!! I have daughters, but not...

How Can I Get My 14 Year Old to Enjoy School?

I have a 14 year old son who has dislike school since second grade. It has been a constant struggle to get him up in the morning and to motivate him to take pride in his school work. He is very bright, but puts the minimum amount of effort into his work. I have stressed the importance of education, I have tried bribes, rewards and everything else I can think of to motivate him..nothing works. I would welcome your suggestions.
