Crib Vs. Bassinet

We are buying items for our first child who is on the way soon :). I am looking at all the things to buy, and was wondering about a crib vs . bassinet. I know bassinets are only for the first couple months. How many of you actually used these or did any of you start out straight with a crib? What did you like about either? What brands do you like of either? Seems like there has been a lot of recalls these days. thanks!

We have some bumpers, breathable bumpers that collapse very easily. In fact, he kept kicking them down and I had read that he could use them to try and climb out, so we removed them. Should I put them back in? Knowing that they...
