Eye Exam...Opthalmologist Vs. Optometrist

I need to get an eye exam but my medical insurance does not cover vision care. I wondered if any of you know approximately how much an eye exam costs. I'm assuming that since an opthalmologist is an MD, it is more costly to see one rather than an optometrist. I also wondered if any of you have been to the optometrists located at, Lens Crafters, Costco, Sears, etc.? Do you have any recommendations? I'm located in the San Rafael area. Thanks so much.

Optometrist Vs. Pediatric Opthalmologist

My daughter failed her vision screening in school back in March. I took her to an optometrist who said her vision was borderline (20/40) and didn't want to prescribe glasses just yet. He said he wanted to check her vision again in 6 months, which is coming up in September. My mother has been urging me to take my daughter to a pediatric opthalmologist instead. Is there any reason to go to an opthalmologist instead of the optometrist? I find the optometrist/opthalmologist thing a little confusing. Thanks

How Often Kids Visit Optometrist

I have a 2 1/2 yr old and a 4 1/2 year old. Each has visited the optometrist twice. Neither shows any trouble with vision. So, my question is this -- how often are young children supposed to visit the optometrist? Of course, the optometrist says every year, but I don't recall going that often as a kid (and preventitive health was a priority with my parents). Preventitive health is a priority with me as well, but I don't want to pay for yearly visits IF they are not necessary. So, does once a year sound right? Is that what your doctors tell...
