Child Development Books

I'm looking for a good general child development book. Physical, emotional, social, mental. I'm worried I'm expecting too much from my kids and I want kind of a reference to see if I'm in the ballpark. Thanks!

Last night, my SIL's father passed away. While I have only met him a few times, I thought he was a great man. The only thing I am not sure about is if I am supposed to attend the funeral. I have never been to a funeral before...only memorial services. This is my brothers FIL who passed. I want to make sure I am there to support my brother and SIL. But I hear from people that only immediate family or close friends attend the funeral. I am not even sure of the arrangements just yet and I am thinking maybe just wait to hear what they...

Helping My Children Become Self-reliant.

I want to raise my children to be good decision makers and be a bit more structured than I was as a child, but I don’t want to be a micro mom manager. I want them to gain the skills they need to begin to take more responsibility for their activities. Dressing themselves, making sure they have all of their homework etc. Does anyone have any techniques or tools I can use with young children?

Independence Day

Happy American Independence Day. I asked my 12 yr old niece what Independence Day meant & she had no idea besides 'independence' & get togethers & fireworks at night. Do you talk to your kids about what this day represents? How about other Holidays like Memorial Day, Veterans Day etc. As a kid I didn't care to know about any of these holidays but now as an adult I have an appreciation for all these holidays & what they represent. What do you think?

What Was Your Major or Career?

I am 3 classes from getting my associates degree in general studies. Then, I will have to declare a major when I apply to a university. I know what I don't want to do (I am horrible at anything math related), but have no clue what I do want to do. I will get career counseling and take a personality test (myers briggs) to help me narrow it down. But I wanted to know *real world* experiences in the job field and if it relates to your major at all to give me some ideas, because I am stumped. So, if you feel like sharing. What did you major...

My 8 year old special needs daughter is starting to go through puberty. I am beside myself. Besides the fact that she is so young, she is also immature. My pediatrician who is a female, says this is normal. I did not go through puberty until I was 12 or 13. Is there anyone out there that has experienced this with their daughter. Any advice would help!!! Thanks., J.

Bat Mitzvah

Hello Mamas! I know someone out there will know the etiquette for a Bat Mitzvah. I am honored to have been invited to a friends daughters Bat Mitzvah, however I have no clue as to what I am doing. I need advice on what to wear and what to give as a gift. I find myself exhausted's great that my dd shares everything with me because I can help her navigate all of the social situations that happen at school...(i.e. Suzie said this to me, Judy won't play with me, etc. etc.) There's nothing earth shattering...most of it is typical tween stuff that, according to other moms, other kids are going through as well. But I find myself getting sucked in and upset. I feel like I'm going through all of it myself and I'm still upset even after my dd has gotten over it. One situation that...

How Do You Volunteer Your Time?

I'd like to start doing some volunteer work with my kids and was wondering if any of you have any advice on which organization I should participate with. Do any of you do any volunteer work? And if yes, which type of volunteer work do you find most fulfilling? Since my daughter (5yrs old) is amazing with the elderly and my son (7 yrs old) prays for the poor and needy every night, I wonder if there's an organization that has a combination of the two that needs help. Thanks ladies!
