11 Mo Old with Rash on Stomach Only

Dallas, TX

My daughter has a rash on her stomach only. It is mostly on the right side. It started yesterday and was so light that I almost didn't see it and by this evening it has bumped up and started turning pinkish-red. We have started mixing in whole milk with her formula for 6 days now and she has been on Prevacid for 8 days. We are stopping the Prevacid for the weekend to see if it is an allergic reaction, but I don't understand why it is only on her tummy. It is not even on her chest. Any ideas? Also, just wanted to mention that she is not on any other medications and has not had a fever at all. I did contact her pediatrician on Friday and they are the ones who suggested stopping the Prevacid for the weekend.

16 Month Old Son Slept All Day Yesterday? Is Something Wrong?

Dallas, TX

Hi moms, I had a quick question. My 16 month old usually very active son slept almost all day yesterday. He was probably up about 4 hours totoal. He would just come and lay down and go right back to sleep. He also didn't eat much yesterday, probably because he wasn't up enough to eat too much. He's never done anything like this before so I wanted to know if any other moms have experienced this. When he WAS up yesterday, he did play and act like his normal self. He is just getting over a cold so I don't know if that may have just drained him or what? But I'm concerned.

I have come to find that my son has very sensitive and dry skin this winter. His back had already broken out with tons of dry patches, which with ritual lotion application, it has gotten better. But now I see that his scalp is really dry also. I see that they DONT make conditioner for children so Im curious, how do i make it better? Wash his head less? apply adult conditioner? My son gets a bath every night. I was considering washing his head less but he loves to lie back and submerg his head in the tub. Any ideas? Thanks

16 Month Old with Sudden Balance Issues

Dallas, TX

Hey Mama's, I'm worried about my son. Yesterday our in home childcare provider called (which she never calls me) and told me that my 16 month old son Trenton had been stumbling and falling alot and she was worried about him. I first thought ear infection or the shoes he was wearing. I immediately called the dr b/c this is what they told us to look for when we were in for is 15 month well check and ear check. We took him to the dr. last night only to find out that he only had a build up of wax in both ears and only minimal fluid in one ear which wasn't enough to be considered an infection or need meds. The dr dismissed the falling and stubbling as a 16 month old "Dare Devil". I even told the dr. that he wasn't running and then falling he was simple walking over to the toys and would fall and just cry. He also bumped his head several times while falling. I'm heart broken that my son went through this yesterday and upset that the dr. just dismissed this as normal behavior for a 16 month old. I need your advise mom's, I really have no idea where to go next.

22 Month Old Having Bowel Movement Issues

San Francisco, CA

My 22 month old is having some bowel movement issues. She was constipated so we were giving her milk of magnesia which wasn't doing much. Then we gave her a glycerin suppository which released the blockage "and then some". After the initial blockage was removed, she continued to have issues "getting it out" so we went back to milk of magnesia. The milk of magnesia seems to make her have these "massive explosions". I am now giving her fiber in her milk every morning and trying to feed her prunes. The poor thing cries when she has to go poop and it is very "hard". Does anyone have any suggestions on things that have worked for them??

32 Weeks Pregnant with Possible Gall Stones

Dallas, TX

I've been having pains in my upper right abdomen that shoot into my back since I was about 26 weeks pregnant. My doc said that it's probably gall stones and that they can't do anything until the baby is born. My daughter was born on her due date so if this birth goes accordingly I could be looking at 8 more weeks of pain. I spent last night in the recliner, which helped a little but the pain was still there. I notice the onset within 30 minutes of a meal, no matter how small the meal/snack. Even a bowl of Raisin Bran caused the pain this morning. HELP!!! Has anyone gone through this that can recommend some measure of relief? I pray that God will heal me and I won't have to get it removed after birth, but until then I would love some advise on recommended foods or stretches or ANYTHING. Thanks to all the mommies out there!

4 Month Old with a Cold

Allentown, PA

My 2 year has only had 2 colds in his life. His first one wasn't until he was 1 year old. So now that my 4 month old has a cold I am not experienced at dealing with colds. He has a really stuff nose. He coughs occasionally, but I think it may be from the mucous in his nose. I took him to the doctor and they said not do anything as he just has a cold. I am running a humdifier next to him at night and during the day. But I can't really think of much else to do beside vapor rub. Does any have any tips for keeping a 4month old comfortable?

4 Year Old Constipation Help?

Denver, CO

We recently moved to a new location in October and ever since then my 4 year hasn't been able to poop right. We've tried just about everything - prunes/prune juice, all types of fruit, cutting out dairy, buying bottled water (we have tons of minerals and thought that might be it) and even the laxative methods. Ex-lax, stool softeners and laxatives just don't work. When it becomes painful for her we finally have to give in and get out the enema, which hurts me and her! The doctor just told us to use prunes and cut out dairy and rice. But getting her to eat enough prunes isn't going to happen. She stops at three. Is there anything else that has worked for anyone that we can do at home?

5 Month Old Just Vaccinated and Acting Different

San Diego, CA

Hi, my 5 month old just got her 4 month vaccinations. She has recently learned to roll over and has to do it anytime she is placed on her belly. She is a rolling maniac!!!! I even had to put her in a play pen next to me at night so that I can stop her from rolling over so much and waking herself up. So anyway, back to the vaccinations...after receiving her vaccinations I realized that she is no longer rolling over. She doesn't even seem like she has the desire to try. I was thinking that her leg is possibly sore from the shots??? Maybe this is causing her to not want to put any pressure on that area???? She was a little fussy yesterday as well. So maybe she just isn't feeling like her normal self. I was just curious if any other moms have experienced this. She is still laughing, smiling and making eye contact. I am just a little concerned. I would love any feedback.

5 Month Old with a Recurring Yeast Infection

Los Angeles, CA

Hi, I was wondering if anyone else had a problem with their babies having a recurring yeast infection? I have a 5 month old baby boy and this is the second time he's had it. I got rid of it the first time with Lotrimin, and I'm using the same medicine right now, but is there a way that I can prevent this from happening again? I understand that I need to keep his diaper clean, and we do that all the time, except at night since he sleeps for 8-9 hrs straight through. I don't want to wake him up to clean his diaper because it can be difficult to put him back to sleep. Thanks! -c

9 Month Old with Constipation

Yuba City, CA

My baby is 9 months old, almost 10 months, and has constipation. He has always had a problem introducing new foods, was colicky the first 3 months of life (that changed once we switched to lactose-free)and so we move slowly with new foods. One at a time and only one about every four days. We pretty much have it figured out which ones agree with him and which ones don't but lately we haven't introduced anything new, have been giving him water throughout the day, prunes and apples in his daily diet and also acidophilus at night to help his little digestive system (which he's been on since a newborn to help with the colic) all of these things combined used to loosen him right up! But in the last week none of them are working and the poor thing is struggling to push "deer poop" out daily and is screaming becfore passing anything. Anyone else with any ideas before heading the doctor for stool softener? I really would prefer natural/alternative methods before running to the doc's office. Thank you!

A 2Nd IUD, Norplant, TUBES TIED????

Dallas, TX

Hello Mom's!! In March it is time for my IUD to come out. I have had it for 5 years and have LOVED it so so so much!! I have to decide what else to get in it's place and I am at a loss. The ONLY reason I am not jumping back on the IUD bandwagon, is that is really made for someone with one partner. Not saying that i have multiple or anything, I have none actually. BUT I am single, and I do not think that in the next 5 or 10 years I will have only one partner. They really stress that factor of it. So my ? is, do I go with the IUD, or try the inplant? I do not want anymore children, that is a solid decesion that I will not change my mind on. Will my insurance pay for my tubes to be tied? I would be 100% willing to have that done also, but I think there are age and child requirements on it, (Or is that just with Medicaid patients?) I am 23, have one child and have basically raised two others. I am done making babies, just want to concentrate on the ones God has given me already. So IUD, Norplant, or FIXED?? What do you think ladies?

Abdominal Problems

Sacramento, CA

Something is going on with my abdominal area and i am hoping someone out there has an idea of what might be up. My GP thinks i might have a umbelical hernia and i go see a general surgeon on 12/10. so heres my symptoms...about a year or so ago i had the first episode which was my belly was swollen and all around my belly button was just unbearable to touch. this lasted approx 2 days. yes, i know, i should have gone to the doc right away, but i hate going so i didnt... then this year around the end of october it felt like someone was pulling my belly button from behind, some swelling but no super sensitive belly button, and sharp pain on my right side down and under from belly button. yes, i know i should have gone to the doc but my sons school had a pumpkin path that i had volunteered to help with and so i waited to go.. went and saw the doc on nov 6th. the swelling was gone but the pain was still there. he referred me to the surgeon. i am still having pain to the right of my belly button and it feels like when you get a stitch in your side from running. this pain is from the right of my belly button down to where my c-section scar is. it hurts more if i move fast!! i had a hysterectomy approx 5 years ago and had a hernia then that i wasnt even aware i had. does this sound like a umbelical hernia? I'm going to the bathroom okay, so i dont think its an intestinal blockage or a uti. does appendix trouble feel like this? I am dreading going to the surgeon, any ideas what he will do to me? thanks fellow moms!!

Adult Son with Problems

Fort Wayne, IN

My son is 29 and has Marfan Syndrome. He is on disability due to this. He is very intelligent (really I am not bragging). I know that what affects the body also affects the mind. He is typical Marfanoid. 6'11", had heart surgery at 21, long fingers, scoliosis, etc. He has pretty much secluded himself in his apartment, keeping it dark with only one lamp. He plays on a computer with 25 or more people signed on at the same time SEVERAL times a week. He has jumped from one interest to another over the last 4 years. I know that at 29 he has to take care of himself, but he does'nt. I have had to tell him that he cannot come over to see me just when he wants something. And that is what he does. I think that he needs therapy, maybe xanax and an antidepressant. But he insists that he is alright. So I have had to let go. I pray for him to let God back into his life. He has God's salvation, but has left our community church. Does anyone have any ideas or encouragement to offer? Thank you and God bless you!

Almost 3 Year Old Is Pulling Out Hair

St. Louis, MO

My daughter, who is almost 3, has recently started twisting and twirling her hair, and then will proceed to pull out the knot, which also takes a big chunk of hair out. I was wondering if this might be a nutritional thing (like a lack of a certain vitamin?), because she was biting her nails at first, and since I started giving her children's vitamins, she has stopped this. I have also tried numerous things, such as her favorite blanket, etc., but she doesn't really sleep with a stuffed animal, and she doesn't really carry her blanket around with her for security. I also tried buying her a doll with long, silky hair thinking she might twirl that, but she didn't really take onto that either! So, any advice would be great, and the sooner the better since she is starting to go bald on one side!

Angry Outburst While Eating

Dallas, TX

Hi moms, I was wondering if this is phase or what. My son recently has started having angry outbursts while we are eating, this is about the 3rd one he has had. I start feeding him, then all of a sudden he starts clawing at his mouth and then pulling food out of his mouth, scratching his face, bucking his body, and oh don't forget the screaming!! Is this normal, my other son has never done this. I know every child is different, but this is crazy!! **** Its the food he loves, we take turns feeding, as in he feeds himself awhile then i feed him then back and forth. Everything is fine, then all of a sudden he goes crazy! Thats why its so weird. ** He does have reflux but its under control, and its not every meal he does it, in the past 5 days he has just done it at random times. He does have food allergies, but he hasn't had them. Everything is like normal foods he as had numerous times. ;-) TIA moms!

ANOTHER Sleep Deprived Frustrated Couple.

Portland, OR

My son is 13 months old.. He was a terrible sleeper until about 6 months then got better;-) Yah... But he still wakes up at least once a week in the middle of the night. I usually give him a bottle. (We are never sure if he is cold, teeth, growing, hunger or stomach?) If I give him a bottle of milk or water he usually goes right back to bed. We live near a noisy company that starts working (making noise) at 5am. So my son wakes then and now even when they are closed he wakes at 5am. IS this all normal? My husband and I argue every morning because we are tired! He thinks that he shouldn't go to him in the middle of the night and wants to let him cry in the morning until 6am or 7am. I feel like we should go to him when he wakes. Babies want to sleep, I can tell he just isn't fussy when he wakes but has a need. Right now he has an eye tooth coming down so he isn't eating much either. Do any of you have the same situation?

Any Moms Who Have Dealt with Growth Hormone Therapy and Meningitis?

San Antonio, TX

I am looking for anyone else who has had to deal with Growth Hormone Therapy. My 15 month old son will be starting therapy very soon. He is the average size of a 6-8 month old right now in height and weight. He has had a long list of medical issues during the past year, including: meningitis, pneumonia, asthma, shudder attacks, reflux, and others (too many to list it all). I don't know if there is a link between everything. He sees a Pediatric Endocrinologist who has done numerous tests on him and found the Growth Hormone deficiency (hormone is almost non-existent). I've done some research online about Growth Hormone Therapy, but would like to talk with someone who has had to go through it. Some of my questions are: Is there a set time during the day to give the shot? Where do you have to give the shot (location on body)? How long do you have to stay on the therapy? and many others. If you have gone through any of these, please help answer my questions. I'm getting frustrated with him having new medical issues every other month and no one can give me an answer as to why or what is causing it all.

Anyone Ever Used Silver Nitrate Before?

Dallas, TX

My son had a g-tube placed and had granular tissue form all around the stoma (hole) or openening of the skin where the button goes..(there's no stitches) anyway, they give u these sticks that turn the red tissue black and dries it up. They said it can burn. Well last night I did it for the first time by myself and what I thought was tissue on his left side I put silver nitrate. By the way Monday in the surgeons office, he didn't cry or fuss, or scratch or itch....last night he did. My husband and I removed the gauze and and it looked as if I had "burned" his whole left side of his stomach! I felt so damn bad! I wanted to cry. I called the surgeon on call, which is not the one who did the nitrate. He said in a sarcastic way, "obviously you don't know how to do it yourself, so don't use them anymore" well duh, I'm new to this button thing, they won't give me a home health nurse with my son's condition. So what am I supposed to do. So he said, "if it gets big, u just come in the office and we'll shave it off". Ok fine. ANd he said bye quickly and hung up. Like I wasted his time. By the way, he said you can't get a major burn, it just kinda tattoos the skin. So my question is...has anyone else had this same issue happen to them using this stuff? and what happened to them? Thanks. D.

Anyone Have Any Experience with a Giant Cell Granuloma...?

Los Angeles, CA

Hi Mamas: My sweet 5 year old daughter has been diagnosed with a giant cell granuloma on her gum. It is a benign tumor (thank God!), but is the agressive type. She had surgery to remove it once but unfortunately, it returned within 6 months. Now her oral surgeon has decided that the best course of action is a series of injections (yikes!) into the tumor. AS you can imagine, I am not looking forward to this, however I will of course do what is best for my baby girl. I was just wondering if anyone out there had any expeirence with this type of therapy - it's 1 corticosteroid shot into her little mouth 1 time per month for 6 months. Let me know if anyone has experience and what I should expect. Thanks so much mamams! -M.

Anyone Have Sensitive Stomache After Giving Birth?

Dallas, TX

Ever since I had my 1st child, who is now 4, my stomache is very sensitive to cheese, any time I eat pizza, or lasagna I get horrible cramps, vomiting, and the D word. Doctors can't explain it, it occurrs randomly, it is so weird, and Doctors refuse to admit, that it is related to my body being affected after child birth. I never had this type of reaction before childbirth, so I am thinking it has to be related. Here is my question, has anyone else experienced this or something similar, and if so, what did you do about it, besides obstain from that food? I guess no more pizza for me! How sad! It lasts about a year after I had my first child, and the same thing now after my second one. I am tired!

Anyone Heard of a Viral Rash

Tampa, FL

My son who is 17 months old had a couple of episodes a year ago that his pediatrician termed a "viral rash". It was usually following a high fever and consisted of tiny red bumps covering his entire body that took a week or so to go away. He has recently had a similary "break out" for lack of a better term, but has not had a recent fever. I tried to think if he had eaten anything new and couldn't think of anything. I gave him a couple of doses of Benadryl like my pediatrician had recommended last time and it is slowly getting better. I haven't taken him to doctor b/c I am thinking she will tell me to continue what I am already doing. I was just wondering if anyone had any similar experiences to share. He has pretty sensitive skin and eczema, so I have to really watch sometimes and sometimes he is completely clear. Thanks.

Are My Kids Breaking?

Dallas, TX

Ok, so my son has autism and we found this out back in October of 2007. Today my daughter had her four year check up and I love her doctor, he is the best and I would never second guess him or trade him for the world! Last year Bella weighed 25.1 lbs and was 35.5 in. tall. This year she is 28.1 lbs and 35.5 in. tall. The weight is great, my kids have always been at or around the low percentage on weight because thier metabolism is fast and they are so active, so my issue isn't there. It's that she stayed at 35.5 inches tall and has not grown a single inch in a year. The doctor is running tests to figure out what is going on, he thinks she may have an issue with her thyroid or something. What do you mom's think? Maybe I am over reacting but she is my baby, she is four and I am woried about her. What could cause a child not to grow??? She eats well, I make three meals per day, we don't eat out and she has her snacks. I feel like I am breaking my kids or something, any ideas on what could cause a child not to gain height? By the way, no one on my husbands side or my side ever had this issue. Thank you in advance for your help.

Baby After a Vesectomy

Houston, TX

Hi moms, My husband and I (reluctantly) agreed several years ago that he should have a vesectomy because he didn't want to have anymore kids and both of my pregnancies were really h*** o* me so he didn't want me to go through that again and at the time I was adament that I didn't want to go through it again either. Well now I'm having second thoughts and struggling w/ serious baby fever. I don't know what to do. So, have any of you had your husbands have a vesectomy and then have it reversed? How was it getting pregnant? How did he react to you changing your mind? My husband has already said "no" once awhile back ago when I started "kind of joking" about it, but now I'm serious and I really don't think he is interested. We have talked about adoption before and even fostering kids, but right now I'm able bodied and would hate to think of taking a baby away from a family that otherwise would not have a baby w/ that option and foster care scares me right now since my kids are still pretty young. Should I give up and be happy (which I am please don't get me wrong) with what I have been blessed w/ or should I really push for this?

I am concerned that she will turn the hot water on and scold herself. Bed Wetting

Dallas, TX

Hello Moms, I have a 13 year old girl, who keeps having bouts with bed wetting. We potty trained fine, and then when she was in kindergarten we moved. That's when it started. There are 2 different theories out there, one of which, (her Dr.'s theory) is hormonal. After a year of waking her up around 11 pm and making her go to the bathroom, which worked while I did it, a week after that year was up, she was wetting again. And it comes and goes. She'll be fine for several months, and then it starts again. Her pediatrician at the time put her on some medication, that worked. And we kept her on it for quite a while. But I'm one of those people who are concerned about the long term effects. So eventually we got off of it. There is another means of cure from a company that uses a device that gives off a slight vibtation at the first sign of dampness. But that's sounds a bit cruel to me. That's the other theory is that the person is in such a deep sleep, they don't feel the bladder fill. Her pediatrician retired, we're kinda inbetween dr.'s. If any of you have had this issue with an older child, I would really appreciate your input.

Bed Wetting in Older Child

Austin, TX

HI, my youngest girl is 12 and started wetting the bed when she was about 4, after being potty trained. I, myself, wet the bed until I was 7, as did my other daughter, and I figured she would grow out of it. Her doctor thought the same thing. In fact when she started her period, about 6 monthes ago, it stopped for over about 2 weeks. But not it's happening everynight, when previously it happened about 3x's a week. Her doctor stil thinks it will pass, but said if I get worried or if she wants we can put her on medication. Has anyone else had this problem?? Do meds make a long term difference? I don't want her to be struggling with this problem in her teens and adult life!! What we've tried so far: *setting alarms- she pees before they go off or later after they've gone off, or doesn't wake up for them at all *the alarm system- a thing that fits in underwear that sets off an alarm when so the child wakes up as she is peeing. the alarm is loud enough to wake up the rest of the house so parents can come in if she doesn't wake up. we would forget to plug it back in after she got up once, sometimes it went off for seemingly no reason, it came unpluged in the night or some other thing was always going wrong with it. it lasted for about 3 monthes before it stopped working completely. *cutting out foods she might be allergic too such as dairy, wheat and nuts for about a month. *waking her up at night whenever I wake up. This is my latest effort and has been making some differences, but is no permanent solution. Oh!! one more thing that might be important, she also has insomnia and has for about as long as she's had the bed wetting issue. I've feel they're related as they're both sleep disorders, her doctor doesn't seem to think so.

Bedwetting

Houston, TX

My daughter is 12 and still wetting the bed every week and sometimes several times a week. We have tried several things, limiting her liquids at night, waking her up in the middle of the night for her to go, we tried the very expensive pad with the alarm (which did work for a while, until she stopped using it because it was "too uncomfortable"), I have also purchased the potty pager for teens. The problem is she will not use it, she may start out the night when I put her to bed with it put then she moves it. It seems to me that her problem is really not bothering her that much anymore. I do wash her sheets but now she has to make her bed by herself. I have recently told her she cannot have any sleep overs until she stops, I just feel like she is not even trying or concerned about it. Not sure what to do, I dont like punishing her because of this problem but I need to see that she is concerned and wants to do something about it. Please help.

Big Lump Under Breast Bone, Please Help

Dallas, TX

I got very sick this weekend with a very high fever and I developed a big lump under by breast bone, it's about 3 and 1/2 inches all around. My husband says that it looks like I have a pregnancy tummy under by bra line. It's not hard, but its very sensitive to touch and it hurts the worse when I walk, it feels like I'm carrying around a big bowling ball. I went to the doctor and he just listened in on that ear and then said the lump was nothing. I had to get an antibiotic shot and meds for my fever, he said my blood results showed I had a bad infection. Apparently the shot and meds have worked because I'm here writing right now, but the lump has just stayed the same. I'm just worried that it's going to grow or that it's never to go away. Should I calm down and just wait until my infection is done with and see if the lump goes away? Has anyone else ever had something like this happen to them? I'm really worried and I would really appreciate some calming words.

I am 27 and I have never had a problem with bladder infections until now. I have three kids and my youngest is 16 months. In the past 7 months I have gotten 3 UTI's and I just wanted to know if anyone else has this problem of has had this happen to them. The doctor doesn't seem worried but I am alittle concered,, I guess maybe because I've never had this happen before. I would love your feedback. Also, is the cranberry pills just as good as drinking the cranberry juice? Ok,it's Tuesday now and I am no longer burning but I feel pressure in my pelvic floor not hurting but uncomfortable.. I don't know what this means or if I'm creating this pain myself because I'm thinking about it all the time. I was thinking it's because I haven't had a BM since starting the antibiotics so could that be where the pressure is coming from? Thanks! I'm going nuts here!

Blowing Noses...

Cincinnati, OH

I've been part of this group for a while now and this is the first question I've really needed help with. My daughter just turned 6 this week and I still am unable to get her to blow her nose if she has the sniffles. I've tried teaching her how to blow out a candle through her nose (when it's not stuffy), showing her how to do blow by example, everything I can think of and she just says she can't do it and it hurts. I don't believe it actually hurts her I just think shes being stuborn about it. Also she has been potty trained since she was 2 1/2 but she STILL WONT WIPE when she goes poo. She says she doesn't want to get poo on her hands or smell it and I ask her if she thinks I want to have to smell her poo every time? This is a VERY smart child but she dose seem to have confidence issues because if she trys to do something and it's "hard" the first time she wants to give up and I have to keep on her to keep trying (i.e. putting shoes on, spelling her name, learning the sounds of letter). I'm at a loss on these two things that it just seems I CAN NOT get her to grow out of!! lol any advice would be wonderful. ~~~S.

Chicken Pox Vax

Hi all, Just looking for some opinions: my little one is due for his chicken pox vaccination at his next check-up. Why do they now give that vaccine? I'm 33 and never had it. My brothers and I all had chicken pox, and it didn't really seem like that big of a deal. Now, my MD is telling us that our little guy should get it--just wondering how many of you got it? I do know that once you've had chicken pox, you're more susceptible to shingles. I'm a believer in vaccinations, but I have spaced them out. It just seems like our little ones are getting so MANY more shots than we ever got. Just looking for some more advice/info b/f I make the decision whether to go ahead with the shot or not. Thanks!

Child Complaining Her Tongue Hurts...

Chicago, IL

Hi moms...my daughter is currently getting over a gastro eneritis (sp?) and was feeling much better. Immediately after she started complaining that her mouth hurt...decided she must be getting her 2 year molars. Last night...ALL NIGHT she cried unconsolably and said her tongue hurt. Nothing seemed to help. I called the doctor and she said that she may have mouth ulcers and is probably in a lot of pain. Her only advice was to give her Motrin. Has anyone been through this or have any advice as to how to sooth her pain when the Motrin doesn't seem to be working?
