Bye Bye Pacifier? Bye Bye T-shirt Too?

San Angelo, TX

Hi! I know there has been alot of questions about getting rid of pacifiers and I plan to try some of the tips I have read. My concern is that my son also carries around an old tshirt of mine that is like his blanket. T-shirt and paci go together with him. He seems to be even more clingy with them lately. I don;t know if it is me being pregnant or that he is teething or what. I don't mind when he has the paci at bed time or in the car, but he whines for it all the time (I try to keep it in his bed for night night time) and when he does have it at other times he just throws it down anywhere and i have to hunt for it. It is so annoying and I don't think he needs it anymore. OK so my actaul question is, if I get rid of paci, does t-shirt have to go? I think he does need a cuddle item and that is all he has. How do I seperate them? I was going to do the trick of cutting the paci's nipple so it can be gradual, but should I try it cold turkey too? I just want him to have that comfort item. He's cutting his last molars, so should I wait until after there in even though that can take forever? We have our next baby coming in Aug. and I would like the paci gone well beore that so it hopefully won't be such a drama if the new baby has a paci. Sorry this is so long, but I am torn!

C-section/Burn Follow Up- Results in Having MRSA? Help!

Evansville, IN

Okay, so I posted on here a few weeks ago about the horrible burn I got as a result of the Bovie they used to my c-section. Well, I went to the wound clinic for the burn, after putting promogran on it, i am happy to say it is now healed! The doc did a culture on my burn and the hole I had in my stomach from the drain they put in during the section, and today I found out I have MRSA. The doc didnt seem concerned about it at all but I am freaking out. I have read about this being a horrible staph infection. He gave me a months worth of doxycycline antibiotics and told me that would clear it up. He told me I probably got it from the hospital. My question is, is this contagious? I read that is was and now i am freaking out that my 23 m onth old, my 3 week old and my husband could have it. I have no fever, my incision looks fine, no oozing nothing, so I have no symptoms of infection which is causing the concern for my family. If I didnt kmnow I was infected how am I to know they are ot either.!

My husband just got his dream job offer in Oklahoma. For what we owe on our house here in California, we could have a mansion there and I wouldn't have to work (my dream). Anyone else have experience (good or bad) with relocating far from everything you've ever known?

Can an 18-Month Old Boy Operate a Sit 'N Spin?

Kansas City, KS

I have an 18 month old son. I bought him a Sit n' Spin for Christmas. It was a great price and very cute. I was looking for things to keep active inside over the Winter. But, I am starting to worry that he is too young for it and that he won't be able to operate it. The box says it is age appropriate for 18 months to 3 years, but I thought I would check with the real experts. Do you think he can handle this? Should I return it? Thanks!

Phoenix, AZ

I don't know what to do. I have goals: personal, employment, spiritual. But I have no clue how to start towards them. I'm very undisciplined. I say I'm going to do something for my self, improve, and then I don't do it. I just sit around wasting my time watching TV and playing computer games. I need someone to help me keep on track. Ask me what I'm doing, to care about ME. I need a life coach cuz I feel like I'm addicted to doing nothing.

Can Babies See Ghosts?

Rochester, NY

My 2 month old daughter keeps looking at the ceiling laughing and smiling and doesn't want to take her eyes off of it sometimes (she'll turn her head back up towards the ceiling if I pick her up or move her). Thing is, she does this in a room where I had a kitten pass away a few years ago. My cats often times will sit facing a corner in that room, looking up at the ceiling....very close to where he died, and I swear they are looking at him. I know she could just have gas or just be smiling for other reasons, but she's very expressive and her expressions have usually been in response to some sort of visual stimulation. My mom also passed less than two months before she was born after a long battle with cancer, and I wonder if she could be looking at her. My mom in her last days said "I can't wait to see her". Maybe she's seeing her now....

Care to Share an "Easy" Recipe Your Kids Will Eat???

Orlando, FL

I HATE to cook... It's not that I "can't" cook- I just don't enjoy it. Those who love cooking always give recipes they say are "easy" but to someone like me who hates to spend time in the kitchen, any recipe that includes chopping stuff up and measuring out a bunch of spices and ingredients is not any fun for those of us who just want to plop something in the oven or a sauce pan and call it dinner! Hahaha! So... anyone have any truly easy recipes that doesn't involve tons of time in the kitchen and your kids love it???

Carseat Struggle

Pittsburgh, PA

hello, my daughter nina is 2 yrs old. for the past two months my husband and i have been having problems getting her in her carseat... it began with her standing straight up in her car seat screaming " no i don't want to sit, it hurts my bum" so we bought a new carseat figuring that the old one probably didn't have enough cushining for her. it turns out that this new one supposedly hurts her bum too. it is a constant battle, not to mention the stress involved, trying to console her, bribe her, anything to get her to sit down and to be less forceful as possible to get her to sit. i do believe now she is testing us, she is extremely strong willed, and also our amazing little angel... we try everything to distract her, singing, radio, etc... any suggestion on how to make this situation go a little smoother?

My son who is 20 months old, had his diaper off & climbed up on the toilet & peed. I am totally puzzled as to what to do next. I had not even planned on starting the process until after his 2nd b-day. I have heard stories about how hard boys are to potty train & that the average age is 3 1/2 yrs. My daughter was completely trained at 2 1/2 yrs & I thought that went easy especially since she had a baby brother. What should I do next? Does this mean he is ready to start? How fast should I go with it?

Change in Sleep Pattern

Cleveland, OH

All this week my 2 year old son has changed his sleep pattern, he has been waking up earlier and only wanting to take a 45 minute nap instead of his usual 2-3 nap in the afternoon. Now, he does have a slight cough but I would not even classify it has a cold. I can tell that he needs some more sleep because during the day he tends to get a little cranky (around 4). Has anyone else had their 2 year old decide that he/she does not need the lengthy nap anymore or should I be hopeful that this is just a temporary thing. Oh and the bedtime of 7ish has not changed he does not fight to go to bed he wants to.

Oh my cheese!! Please someone help me! My daughter who is 22 months only wants to eat cheese. Morning..."good morning baby do you want breakfast?" "Es" she replies. "What do you want? Oatmeal, cereal, fruit?" I ask. "Cheeeesssseee" she very cutely replies. However its getting old because this happens at EVERY meal including snack. I can sneak in some fruit or hotdog or chick nugget here and there but never ever without a fight. I am finally writing to all of you moms because this afternoon was the worst tantrum yet. So finally I broke down and gave he some cottage cheese but I tried to sneak in some mixed fruit salad in it and wouldnt you know it she picked out every piece of fruit, sucked off the cottage cheese then spit out the fruit!!! I totally serious she has got will. Dont get me wrong I am very thankful its not candy or something else she is holding out for but I am very frustrated. Can anyone offer me ANY advice? Child Developing Irrational Fear Overnight

Des Moines, IA

Has anyone ever experienced their child developing a fear that seemed to occur overnight? My son has always loved baths - all of the sudden he freaks at how high the bath water is. As soon as he hears the water start running he starts crying and screaming "shut it off" and trys to shut it off with just 2 inches of water in the tub. I cannot figure this out. The only way he does not freak out is if we keep a finger in the tub to where we will fill it to and then shut it off. I am wondering if maybe he saw something in a cartoon about a bath overflowing that would cause this kind of fear? I don't know how to rationalize with him that the water will not go over the tub.

Child Feeling Left Out While Other Is Sick.

Anchorage, AK

I have a sick 2 yr old boy. He just spent 7 days in the hospital, and I now need to travel far from our home to see a specialist since the doctors here do not know what the problem is. My problem is how to keep my 4 yr old from feeling left out or like Mommy love little brother more since I stayed in the hospital and now have to go away on a week long trip and big brother can not come. I have tried explaining about why we have to go (to see the special doctor to help Rayne)and why he can not come with us, but he is still very hurt. He already feels like Rayne gets more specail time with Mom since Sage (my 4 yr old) is in school 2 days a week and Rayne is not. Any ideas on what I can do to help him feel more included? It is hard for me to have any time alone with Sage (without Rayne) since Dad works long hours and we are new to the area so I do not have a good babysitter.

Hi mamas, hoping you can give me some advice with my oldest son's newests habit - biting his nails and skin pads on his thumbs. He is almost 4 1/2 and recently started doing both. He does not seem to have a pattern (i.e does only when nervous, new settings etc), just does all the time. Child Models?

Child Support and Visitation

Cleveland, OH

I am asking this question for my brother. I am hoping that some of you ladies have some advice I can pass on to him. My brother has a 6 year old son that lives with his mother. When my nephew was 3 my brother took his ex (never married) to court to set up child support payments before he joined the army. Six weeks after the court order took affect the ex talked my brother into signing a release to stop child support. The reason behind this was that she was getting help from the state to pay for childcare and with the child support she didn't qualify any longer. So stupidly my brother signed the papers and continued to pay the support without it going through the court. So now here we are 3 years later and the ex has decided she wants to live the life of someone who has money so her first step was to "recalculate" the child support herself. According to her my brother went from paying $385 a month to paying $465 a month. After discussing it at length with him I finally convinced him to tell her no and proceed with having child support order reinstated and to file for visitation rights. Which backfired in his face unfortunately. The ex is now demanding my brother pay for things. She wanted new tires for her car. Her reasoning behind that is she drives his kid around so it's my brothers expense to pay. At first he refused and she kept his son from him for 2 months. She wouldn't even let him talk to his Dad on the phone. So my brother gave in and paid for the tires. So now that she has everything she wanted from my brother she wants the $465 a month. My brother again refused. So she has threatened to have a restraining order to keep my brother away from his son and she is filing a petition to have his parental rights revoked. So I am seeking advice on what he should do. Can she do this to him? Can she legally keep his child away from him? ( He has no criminal back round)He is in the process of filing for help to get a lawyer but in the meantime what should he do? Thanks in advance for all your help!! I look forward to hearing from you all!!

Children Staying with Other Family

Denver, NE

I have a couple issues, mostly dealing with in-laws. Our daughter is 20 months old and I'm not big on the idea of her spending several consecutive nights in a row away from us (mostly me since her dad is away frequently). My in-laws keep making comments about how she needs to stay with grama & grandpa for a week so she knows them better. When I tell them she can spend the day but not the night, they begin making comments & of course call my husband complaining about me. When I have taken her to stay with them for a day or two, she comes home so exhausted, cranky, & clingy that it is miserable. The in-laws do not lay her down for regular naps if any & they do not put her to bed until 11 or later at night (I learned this from one of her cousins who was also staying with grama & grandpa). They allow her to eat anything/everything, disregarding my wishes that sugar be limited (of all people they should understand since grandpa is a diabetic). I understand that staying with the grandparents should be fun, but shouldn't they also use common sense in caring for the grandchild? My husband doesn't visit his parents very often (several times a year)whereas I visit mine once a month. He has somehow made it my responsibility to make sure our daughter sees his parents. Our parents live in the same town, so if I don't stop in with THEIR granddaughter while visiting my parents, the in-laws call my husband & complain. Even though he didn't want to go along to visit them, he gets mad at me & says I should've taken our daughter to stay with them. Unfortunately, my husband takes his mother's side & gives me the chewing out. I'm really frustrated & irritated about the situation. Does anyone have suggestions of how I can handle this?

Christmas

Denver, CO

Okay, freaking out and trying to gather my budget for my kids this year. What do you all spend per child at your house? I have to play Santa, then they get a gift from each other I buy, one from me and stocking stuffers. Their dad hopefully will help me out, but no guarantee. I typically do a bigger item on their list from Santa and something smaller from Santa. This year my son has his list, kept it down to six things, fairly reasonable items and nothing major. My daughter only has three things though, it isn't large stuff, just some things she thought really hard about. What my dilema is what else to get her? She isn't into "toys" persay anymore. I thought about a kid friendly digital camera, do you know of one that is durable, not babyish and not expensive? She is at this age it is really hard for me to figure it out and I want her to be surprised. So far I figured out spending $135 a piece on them if I save up. Is that reasonable? That is six items each. Their grandparents sometimes send stuff or money and this year I have asked my ex to send them something (I typically used to get something and put his name on it) and have him help with Santa gifts. My daughter just had a bday in September too so I am confused what to get her. She likes playing school, I made up our office into a mini classroom with hall passes, dry erase board and globe....any ideas?

Christmas Gifts for Teachers and Students

Erie, PA

Hello. I think I have decided on what to give my sons preschool teachers for Christmas, but I wanted a second opinion. For the 2 main teachers I was going to give them homemade chocolate covered pretzel rods, a homemade book mark (made by my son), and a gift card ($15?) to Walmart or Staples. I was going to give the aid in the room the pretzels and a bookmark. What do y'all think? Also, are gifts or treats usually given to the other students? I found plastic snow globes that come with a snowman picture the kids can color and then put inside at Oriental Trading. They are $6.95 for 6 of them and there are 18 kids in the class. Oh yeah, does anyone have any suggestions for the bookmarks. I thought about using glitter, those stick on gems things, stickers, etc. Thanks!

Christmas Stockings- Apples, Oranges, Nuts and Chocolate Question

Chicago, IL

I am hoping someone can help me! My Grandparents used to fill our stockings with an apple, orange or maybe it was a tangerine, some nuts although I do not remember the kinds and also chocolate. They would also always put a personalized ornament in each stocking with the year and our names. They have passed away since and unfortunately my parents know there was a meaning behind the whole thing but do not remember what it was. I have since started with the rest of the family the tradition of the ornaments but completely forgot until the other day about the apples and oranges etc... I would love to be able to start this again with my kids and let them know the meaning behind it. Any ideas of what the meaning is???? Or if you have any special traditions you do with your stockings that represents something special please let me know what it is and maybe I can incorporate it into ours also! IF ANYONE IS LOOKING FOR A: DAYBED for your daughter, or for a spare bedroom, or for a college student. We are selling an ornate, pewter daybed with an extra trundle bed underneath. It's in excellent condition, as it's only been used for display. We have boys, so a feminine looking daybed is something they will not use. We are asking $150. (we paid $549) ELLIPTICAL TRAINER, which is also in excellent condition and looks brand new. Unfortunately for me, it's only been used once! It has a digital display panel with level of intensity, the time you spend on it, and a pulse monitor, which is obtained by simply squeezing the handlebars. We are asking $100. (we paid $369). LARGE MIRROR: If anyone needs a large piece to hang on a large bare wall space, we are selling a beautiful, ornate, pewter, decorative, beveled mirror. (Large fireplace size). It's heavy and has never been hung because we bought it on impulse because of its beauty. We got it home then realized we don't have a large enough wall space to hang it. It truly is beautiful (very ornate)! We are asking $100. (we paid $300). PROFESSIONAL OLYMPIC WEIGHT BENCH (with 180 lbs of weight). My husband recently had surgery and is no longer allowed to use it. It's barely been used and looks brand new! He is asking $125. (we paid $549). PIANO: If anyone has a child needing or wanting piano lessons, this is a fantastic piano! It is an upright, black gloss piano with bench. It was just tuned two months ago, plays perfectly and looks great! (And we are picky people). We are asking $1,000. (we paid $3,500). Reply to this posting if you are interested in any of these items. Thank you!

Cleaning Shoes That Light Up

Oklahoma City, OK

I watch a little boy who today stepped in a pile of dog "poo". I've cleaning most of it off but I'd like to throw the shoes in the washer. They are the kind of shoes that blink when steps are taken. Will washing them in the washer ruin them and make them quit lighting up??

Clingy to Mommy - HELP!!!

Washington DC, VA

I am a teacher who has been home since mid June with my 17 month old. My husband works nights so it is mostly me all day, every day. I have found that in the last month or so my son has become my shadow - clinging to me and whining if I do not pay attention to him. While he used to be VERY social when we went places - now if I am there he mostly needs me around to feel comfortable. He is fine with other people - my neighbor watched him the other day and my husband was with him all day two days this week while I was at a conference - and as soon as I got home he was tugging for me to pick him up or sit with him. I know that he has obviously gotten very used to me being around all summer but I have not and still don't always hold him. We play a lot during the day together and he has been a daycare baby since 6 months. Don't get me wrong it feels nice to be so loved but the constant whining that accompanies it at times and the inability at times to play on his own a bit without me sitting there - is driving me insane. He returns to daycare Aug 25th so I think that will help matters - or he will be a wreck there :( Has anyone else gone through this or currently going through it.

Cloth Diapering Question

Portland, OR

Ok, this seems to me like a bit of a silly question, but I just had a thought occur to me regarding night diapering while potty training. My question is what have others done for diapering for just the night? It would seem to me that if you are only going through a few diapers a week that cloth might be sort of a pain when it comes to keeping them washed. I wash diapers every third day and by that time there is both a full load and they are, well, pretty ripe. I just thought I would see what others have done and what their experiences are since we are getting close to this point...yippy! :)

Coaching Questions - Serious Help Needed

Seattle, WA

My sister is coaching her 5 and 7 year old daughters soccer teams and one of the dads is VERY overbearing and controlling. He talks over the game, distracts the girls, tries to exclude the beginners or not so good players, calling different plays, barking at them when they make mistakes (mostly just my sisters daughter) etc... I am like, for goodness sakes these are little girls let them play. He badmouths my sister to the other parents in front of the kids. Cold, White Light?

Boston, MA

two days ago, my 6 1/5 year old son said that he was afraid to sleep in his bed because a white light and a cold breeze kept going past him. i didn't think anything of it, i just figured it was an excuse to get into bed with me and his father. last night he told me that after recess at school, a white light came into his class room, stood next to his teacher, and gave the teacher the finger. i'm not quite sure what to think. my father in law passed away this past october and he took it kind of hard. i'm not really one to believe to really believe in ghosts, although i do occasionally find myself questioning noises and other things around me. i guess my main questions are should i be concerned? what should i do? i don't want him to be afraid of this 'white light' but i don't want to feed into his fear and let him continue sleeping with me. i'm just a little shocked that my 6 year would come up with something like that.

Completely Exhausted! and You? the "Whine Line" Is Now Open!

San Diego, CA

Ladies, I'm totally, completely, and absolutely exhausted. Dog dead tired. T I R E D. I haven't had a good nights sleep since January of 2004. (Coincidentally, I got knocked up with my first kid in February of 2004. Waking in the middle of the night for "morning sickness" is not conducive to good sleep.) I know there are many other bone weary moms out there, and I want to hear from you! Misery loves company, so this is your chance: please whine, complain and generally kick up a fuss about just how freaking tired you are, and how no one seems to understand that. We do! So lay it on me--whether it is a funny one-liner (I’m so tired, zombies could outrun me) to the full litany of reasons why you can't get decent sleep, I want to hear about your exhaustion. Even one-upmanship is welcomed! No seriously! I would absolutely love to hear how many people are more miserable than me—-it will make me feel so much better about my own situation :) So come on girls-—and humor is definitely appreciated here, cause I can use a good laugh—-HOW TIRED ARE YOU???

Coordinating Sleep Schedules

Minneapolis, MN

I have a 5 -year-old who doesn't nap, an almost-3-year-old who's on just a PM nap, and an almost-6-month-old who's finally settling into a pattern of AM nap and PM nap. In addition, I do day care, so most days, I have one more who takes two naps, several on one nap, and sometimes one more who doesn't nap. But my question is how to get kids on different nap schedules to coordinate. The day before yesterday, for example, my daughter (almost 6 months) finally took a good AM nap (so often she's woken up by the kids), but then she didn't fall asleep in the afternoon until the other kids were waking up, so we couldn't go outside. Yesterday she took a shorter AM nap but had trouble settling down in the PM and took a shorter PM nap, finally falling asleep during supper (and having a terrible night, though that's a separate issue!). I remember this when my second child was born as well: it seemed like there were a lot of days we didn't make it outside because he would fall asleep as the other kids were waking up. So for anyone who has or watches kids on different schedules, how do you make the different nap schedules work together?

Cosleeping 8 Month Old Transition to Crib

Dallas, TX

Any suggestions from anyone on how to transition an 8 month old to sleep in his crib throughout the night. I just recently started trying to get him to sleep in the crib as he is getting more mobile. I can get him to start the night out in his crib, but he will only stay for an hour or two and then wakes up crying. I am usually unsuccessful in consoling him back to sleep in the crib. He's not a "great" sleeper anyway even in our bed, but will always fall to sleep quickly when cosleeping. Typical night consists of 8:30pm -5am, but has never been much better than this. He does wake up a couple times during the night, but uses his pacifier to comfort himself back to sleep in the family bed. When he awakes at 5 am, I feel that he is hungry and I feed him a bottle in which he immediately goes right back to sleep thereafter. Total time awake for me is around 15/20 min. He naps really well during the day both in crib or in big bed. Any help or suggestions welcomed as I would love for him to sleep an additional hour or two before having to feed him. Any suggestion on how to teach him to comfort himself to sleep in his crib?

Could 11 Month Old Be Ready for 1 Nap a Day?

Washington DC, VA

My 11 month old seems to be transitioning to one nap a day. (She basically refuses to nap before 11am, and will refuse to nap again in the afternoon.) Could she be ready to transition to one nap a day instead of two? When did your children make this switch? Napping has always been an issue for us, so this could also just be a bump in the napping road... Could This X-mas Gift Be Insulting???

Detroit, MI

We picked names on my side of the family for x-mas gifts. I got my sister in laws name, and we are pretty close. I had no idea what to get her because she's one of those people that has EVERYTHING. I e-mailed my brother asking him what he thought she might need like a new outfit, or purse, or perfume....and he said that she needs none of those things but has been complaining that she's been meaning to buy a wax machine because she likes to wax her eyebrows and lip at home. At first I thought this was a great idea, and I did go out and buy her one along with all the accesories that go with it. However the more I thought of this, I'm wondering if she would be insulted by such a gift. I wouldn't want her to think that I think she needs to wax her face, but I guess it is something she wanted to so i'm not sure. Your opinion ont his would be helpful

Crabby in the Mornings

Phoenix, AZ

My eighteen month old son is extremely crabby in the mornings. He wakes up happy, but by the time he's done with breakfast, he's whiny and the rest of the morning is all whining and temper tantrums. He takes a nap after lunch, normally around noon for 2 hrs, and then he's great in the afternoon. Very little fussing, he even plays by himself a little in the afternoon. But the mornings are terrible. He gets about 12 hrs of sleep a night, and like I said a 2 hr nap in the afternoon. I just don't know what to do to make him happy and content in the mornings. He's happy if he's outside, but we can't be outside all the time. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

My daughter put a crayon in her pants pocket and I didn't check her pockets before doing the laundry. Long story short, when the crayon went thru the dryer, it got on everything. I looked on-line and Crayola recommends that you put paper towels under each stain and spray each stain with WD-40, wait, turn the material over and treat from the back, replacing towels as needed, repeat, then wash in hot water on the heavy soil setting. However, I am wondering if anyone has any less labor intensive methods that have worked for them because when I say that the crayon is on everything, I mean EVERYTHING!
