Photographer and blogger Lorrin Sell isn’t perfect. In fact, that’s the main message behind her blog Lorrin Sell | Photographer of Wild Things. As she puts it, she’s a “Mom of four with a camera, embracing the perfect mess of life with kids.” But it’s Sell’s fun and relaxed attitude about parenting that makes her blog so wonderfully relatable and why we picked her for this week’s Contributor Spotlight.
I started this blog as a way to show others how to find the beauty in the messy, imperfect madness that is life with kids. I taught other mothers how to take better pictures of their kids. The blog has morphed into so much more than that, still offering those photography tips but also offering a place to find DIYs, recipes, tips for traveling with kids, and a whole lot of mom life. In the end, all of these things are part of finding that beauty, and deserved a place on the blog too.
Real. Life. Family.
It’s so hard for me to pick a favorite because there are so many for I love for totally different reasons, but I love the post about why we choose experiences over things the most. Our lives can be pretty crazy, we do a lot of things “wrong” but spending quality time together sort of resets us, and that’s so important to us as a family.
Oh, that’s a tough question. There is a lot of work that goes into blogging. I’m two years in, and I still consider myself a baby blogger because so much time and effort goes into it, and I am still learning. The thing that has helped me the most is having an actual schedule, and sticking to it. I try to consider these things on my schedule to have a set due date, and even though it’s a due date I have given myself, I have been very strict about following the things on that schedule.
Do what works best for YOU. You will get a lot of advice from a lot of people. Some will give you great advice, others will make you feel guilty for doing things differently than they do. You have to do what feels best for you and your family though, and not get overly stuck on what everyone else is doing.
A typical day for me is filled with tons of rushing around, lots of meals being prepared, so so much laundry, work, coffee, laughing, tantrums (from the kids AND me), more laundry, popcorn kernels on the floor, “I love yous”, so many brother/ sister fights, and if I’m lucky some Netflix at the end of the day. It’s a hot mess, and so am I, and I wouldn’t change it for the world!
If you’re working on your blog for fun, have fun with it! If you’re working on your blog as a business, have fun with it, but keep in mind that if you want it to behave like a business, and pay you, you’ll have to treat it as a business. That means lots of hard work and dedication.
