Which comes first caring for me or my family?

Not only have I heard this question coming from other parents, I have asked myself this question on many occasions. I can remember as far back as when I was 18 years old raising an 18 month old daughter right after my mother had died. I can also remember as recently as a month ago working overtime to assure that my youngest who is now 15 is where he needs to be academically, to get him into the schools he wants to attend after high school. The many years in between may have given me the knowledge and wisdom to know how to give from the overflow but even I can sometimes forget to pick up the tools I have and use them. The thing to remember is that my life and all of the lives I relate to are an Inside Job.

What I bring to myself and every family I serve is an ability to allow oneself time and space to remember who you are. Remember all the parts of you, that make you the mother, father, co-parent, other mother, aunt, uncle, or otherwise committed family member. When you move into this role from a place of loving yourself so much that it is done with ease and enjoyment, you are giving from the overflow.
