Zantac and Prevacid....

I had 2 reflux kids.. my daughter took zantac and it did wonders for her.. she was happier and didnt seem to spit up as much.. she was a crabby baby before we started the zantac.

My son took zantac and it did not help. I also tried prevacid and it did not help. He was happy and gaining weight but he puked eveyr day all day.

My son puked every day for 14 months. then he stopped..

I only bought the prevacid one time as my copay was $57 for 15 pills (he was taking 1/2 pill a day) it was a bit difficult to dissolve the pill- but I made it work..

We just had to learn to deal with the constant puking until it went away..but my son was happy and would just puke all the time.

I feel for you all 3 of my kids had reflux and were on medication. My youngest son is 10 months old and it is just finally starting to decrease. The Prevacid does work much better than the Zantac. We started seeing results within a few days to a week. It doesn't stop the reflux it just neutralizes the acid so it is not so painful. It can be hard to find a pharmacy that will compound the medication so that you can give it in a liquid form but the Target pharmacy by us does it and they flavor it which you want because unflavored is aweful. If the dr tries to give you a Rx for the capsules to disolve in water don't take it cause it is near impossible (and I am an RN and I still had trouble) to give it to an infant and have them get all of the medication. Also have you tried Enfamil AR fomula I'm sure it is much cheaper that the Elecare and it does seem to help. My son had reflux and took prescription pepcid (not prevacid). It worked very well for him but if I recall correctly it can take up to two weeks to start working well. Another thing I learned is that other prescriptions (antibiotics, etc.) can interfere with the reflux medicine and almost negate it and I would ask the pharmacist if your child is on anything else if it will be effected.

We had my daughter on Prevacid, never tried Zantac, I thought it worked wonders! I started to notice probably w/in a couple days. I wish I knew about it with my first, he spit up all the time and I switched formulas and it didn't work. When I had my daughter I switched ped's drs, and she put her on the prevacid. She told me it didn't matter how many formulas I put her on it wouldn't change the spitting up. The only time you should switch is if they are allergic and spitting up and gassy are not allergic reactions. Blood in the stool is.
