Do you have a great pizza crust recipe?? I've used the mixes, they are kind of yucky. I've used the premade crusts but they are WAY expensive. How do you make pizzas at home. (I've also found that with the ingredients, cheese, toppings, etc. it's just not worth it to make at home, have you found that too?)

I buy the dough in the refrigerated section of the supermarket (sometimes it's with the ready made pizzas and other ready-to-eat foods). I half-roll, half-stretch it to fit the pan (with some overhang because it pulls back) and put the toppings on top. They have a whole wheat version too. It also freezes if I somehow don't get around to it for a few days. I also find pizza is a great way to use up leftover veggies or meat, especially things like peppers or mushrooms that may be getting a little too soft or wrinkly to look great in a salad. Works for us.

I love this recipe from my cuisinart manual. Best part is that it can be done entirely in a food processor.

Google "King arthur flour pizza crust". There are many, many to choose from. I've never had a bad recipe from them and can vouch for their Chicago pizza. My born and bred Chicago husband says it's definitely what he remembers and the 7-yo down the street declared it "the best pizza's he's ever eaten".

Our favorite is to pick up a fresh loaf of French bread, slice it in half so you have the insides exposed, put all of our toppings and sauce on top and then put it under the broiler to melt the cheese, crisp up the toppings and toast up the bread a little bit. We've picked up the rosemary and olive oil bread from Costco and it works really well too. It doesn't have to be French bread, any loaf bread will work.
It is so yummy and so easy!

I find it a waste of time and money to make pizza at home. Pizza is the meal we eat when I don't want to cook!

We usually go out for pizza, I could never make it as good as a restaurant...especially the deep dish chicago.

If I want a quick meal, we just put pizza toppings on english muffins, and it is a super easy meal.

I buy pizza shells at the Italian store. They freeze well.
In my book, this is O. of those items where "homemade" isn't necessarily better. ( the shell/crust)
I sauté green, red peppers, onions in sauce with basil & oregano and make 2-3 pizzas for about 10 bucks.
No shredded mozerella cheese--Parmesan! Italian style!

When I make pizza at home I often just use normal biscuits. I do NOT use the kind with butter or anything like that. I can smoosh them out with my hands and put them in the pan.

Then I use Chunky Garlic, Onion, and Tomato Spaghetti Sauce, either Ragu or Great Value brand. On my own pizza sometimes I just use real butter than sprinkle garlic powder on it.

The kids like different kinds so he does only cheese and she gets regular pepperoni.

Hubby eats any without veggies on them so we don't have any left overs from the kids 8 inch pizzas.

I cook a pound of Jimmy Dean Sage Sausage then grill onions and bell peppers in the pan once I drain the grease. Sometimes I'll add mushrooms to the mix but I always have chopped onions and peppers in the freezer.

I put my sausage on the crust with sauce, whether it's garlic butter or spaghetti sauce, and sprinkle cooked sausage on it. Then I sprinkle the sauteed onions and peppers and top with mozzarella cheese.

I like the biscuit dough because I can unwrap it and use it all in moments.

I like to pick up pre made dough at Trader Joes and add goat cheese or no cheese and all kinds of veg. Regular pizza is too heavy for us since switching to a plant based diet. If I do make the dough, the trick is using a food processor. And I have a great recipe which i'll add later if I feel like finding it.

But it can be a lot of work. The real trick is to chop up your topping in advance and that helps the whole thing go easier.
But I rarely do it because its a pain.

I use a few options at home......
Jiffy crust mix - we use two boxes of mix and make it into 4 personalized pizzas. Kids like that because we each make our own.
Pizza bread - I buy a nice fresh loaf of Italian type bread, slice it down the middle lengthwise to open it up. Sauce, pepp and cheese, bake until melted. super yummy, quick and easy!!!
Pizzadillas - like quesadillas but with pizza filling! lol! I use one tortilla and fold/crease it in half, butter the outside, lay in my pan, cover half side of it with ingredients, then fold it over shut, flip half way thru. yummy!

We do pizza every freakin Friday!! So, we rotate between these homemade options and order/pick-up. works well for us and provides some variety even though it's always pizza! :)

Oh yes, and I forgot about the biscuit pizzas - we do that too!

We make pizza dough at home a few times per month. It's very easy in the Cuisinart. Basically just flour, water, yeast, olive oil and a little cornmeal kneaded in is a nice touch.

I'll make a double batch and either freeze the extra or make breadsticks out of it for another meal. We use real mozzarella (the wet stuff), goat cheese, veggies, homemade pesto and even some fruit to make unique combinations and REALLY good pizza.

Sure it is probably about the same cost as a Papa Murphys or market take and bake but it is higher quality, better for us and tastes incredible. My 16 year old told me recently that my pizza is her very favorite, ever.

To feed a bunch of kids take out is easier but all pizzas aren't created equal. A high end real Italian pizza costs $30 around here.

ADDED: I almost forgot. Like the poster below we sometimes use french bread in a pinch. You don't even need sauce, sliced tomatoes, cheese, fresh basil, veggies and a drizzle of olive oil. Really delicious and takes about 5 minutes.

We do a lot of pizzas at home, but we usually make "fancy" pizzas we wouldn't normally order for takeout or delivery...prosciutto, fig, pancetta, arugula; a Thai chicken with peanut sauce; marinated tomato, spinach, fresh mozzarella...etc. For the crust, I always use the Pioneer Woman's recipe (you can just google it). It tastes best if you make it a day or two ahead and let it sit in the fridge. Always cook it at 500 degrees, even though it usually sets the smoke alarm off. Worth it though. :) Good luck!

We buy Papa Murphys take and bake pizza. It costs less than take out pizza and about the same as the homemade pizza that are described below. And......it tastes good! Papa Murphys pizza is way better than frozen premade.

I have found that the secret is to make a big batch of dough (Bobby Flay's recipe, or Alton Brown's) and then to let the dough rest in the fridge for at least three days. It makes the dough really delicious. You can just pull off enough dough to make the pizza and keep the dough in the fridge for another few days. Kids can pull off just enough for a small, personal size pizza.

I make mine on the grill. It is amazing. Check out all recipes: pizza on the grill 1.

In terms of money, I can make two pies at home for about $10-15. I buy my cheese in bulk bricks, when it's on sale, and then I freeze shredded bags of it. I then make sauce in bulk, and freeze it too...and I make the dough in bulk, freezing a few balls for next time. It's a great freezer kind of meal, but it does take us about 45 minutes to cook the pies. You make it on the grill, so you have to babysit it. Well worth it. We can no longer eat take out pizza.

I'm making pizza Saturday. Even with store bought sauce, I doubt I'll break $15. Mushrooms are on sale super cheap, and then I'll pick up some spanish cerezos, garlic and black olives.

Everyone we've made this for LOVES it. It's super yummy.

We have done extensive "research" on this topic! We have tried dozens of recipes, purchased everything from Boboli to pre-made dough at Sprouts or Trader Joe's. SO it is with authority that I tell you- go to your favorite, local, family-owned pizza place and ask if they will sell you dough balls. Domino's or Pizza Hut won't do it, but most family places will, especially if you are a customer of theirs. The place we go sells the dough for between $1.50 and $3.00 depending on the size. You know the size pizza you will get, the dough is fresh and properly risen, they use the right flour... Don't mess with it, just buy it from the pros! Bring it home, preheat your oven as high as it will go, buy a pizza stone and peel. Cornmeal on the peel, then the dough (stretched and tossed), a sauce that is very simple is best, cheese, toppings, sprinkle with Italian seasoning and a little sea salt. You will need some practice getting it from the peel onto the stone. Keep an eye on it while it cooks. We put two stones in the oven and move the pizza from one to the other mid-cooking. Moving it to a hot stone crisps the dough nicely. See, research!
We do pizza like this about once a week and for just about every family function! Have fun :)
