YMCA Willoughby Swim Lessons

My 3 year old wants to take swimming lessons so I signed her up at the Willoughby YMCA but found out that parents aren't allowed to watch until the last day. I'm a little bothered by this - handing my daughter over to someone I don't know, in water. Yes, it's a very shallow pool but I'm still concerned. Have any of you taken your kids to this YMCA for swim lessons? How did it go? She really wants to take the lessons and I WANT her to, but I'm having a hard time getting past this. Thanks!!

What can I do next?

My three year old just finished gym & swim class at the willoughby Y, I really do understand your concerns, and I sugesst you attend the orientation for parents prior to the class ( its free and offered every session).. you will meet the teachers and get your questions asked.

The ratios were always good- two kids to one instructor and my daughter loved it, they seem to run a tight ship over there and my daughter has enjoyed several classes.

I have not heard anything about the YMCA swim lesson nor did I take my kids there. Someone suggested private lessons and thats what I did. One on One. I do believe that they were a good idea for my child and I was right there. My daughter is 21 and now coaching and she gives private lessons too. If you are interested let me know.

Hello J.,
My husband and I used to be swim instructers for years including at the YMCA. Believe it or not the kids, especially the little ones, actually do much better without you there. Having the parents watching actually distracts them from paying attention - which to say is very important. They may want to go to you instead of staying focused. I know it's very scary leaving such a little one, but you both will end up being so proud. Don't get disscouraged if they may protest a little in the beginning, that will go away. And if it does not, then wait a while longer to try again. I assure you it is very safe, in fact there is a lifequard on duty during lessons. You both will be so proud on parents watch week that it will all pay off and put your mind at ease. Swimming is a very important skill.
Best of luck!

my kids took lessons at the Willoughby Y - the hardest part is getting them through the locker room - but the instructors come down to get them. My kids are great swimmers now, the staff there are very well trained - they've been doing this for a long time! It will be fine - they are very professional, and you'll be surprised how much your daughter will learn!
