Yet Another Potty Question - Denver,CO

My daughters were around 4 when I finally was able to let them independently cleanse themselves post bowel movement. I did as some of the other moms have suggested. But I would have them use tissue paper and then a baby wipe. That way they could see how well they doing and manage to stay clean. I smile when I remember this because when I first explained to my older daughter that it was time for her start doing it on her own... She looked astonished and exclaimed... I'm not touching that! That's gross!

My 3 1/2 year old can do it, but needs some help on those messy ones. If you get him the wet wipes, he can most likely do it on his own unless it's a really messy, yucky poop.

My grandson still needs to be checked at 5 1/2, but he's finally getting pretty good.

You teach him by showing him how to do it and then talking him thru doing it while he copies what you've shown him.

He's at a good age to get started. It will take him a couple of years or more to get proficient.

I would get him some of the wipes and have them handy. I'd encourage him to do it himself with you checking how well he's doing. Like anything else, you need to teach him how to do it well. He'll get it.

My guy is 2.5 and learning, it's part of the potty training process. Have your son start now with the flushable wipes made for kids, he needs to learn as no one will do it for him when he starts school ; )

I started teaching my little girl at 4 1/2 in preparation for kindergarten. We would let her do it on her own and then check her for a few months. After that we stopped checking her and for the most part, her underwear and bum were cleaned well. Also, we got wipes but never got in the habit of using them. I figured she wouldn't have wipes in school so she needed to learn without them. Good luck!

Like everyone else said: start teaching him now. Tell him to wipe until there is no more poop on the toilet paper. Show him how to fold and refold (or reposition) the paper so that he gets a clean wiping surface with each swipe.
I think that actual baby wipes work better than flushable toddler wipes (most toddler wipes are smaller and less moist)...just make sure that they go in a lined garbage can rather than down the toilet!

I wiped all my kids until they started kindergarten. So about a week or two before kindergarten started I began to explain to them how to do it and how to tell if you are done.

Just be careful, I had one of my boys get so obsessive about being sure he had it all that he plugged the toilet with TP, I told him not to put that much in the toilet so the next time he put it in the trash can! Not good. He finally got it down that he can get it all with one or two pieces of TP.
