When I was pregnant with my now 2yr old I was prone to yeast infections. I ate Dannon yogurt (it has natural yeast cultures in it). Doesn't matter what flavor the Dannon brand is the brand that I know of that has the natural yeast cultures in it. When I would eat this for about 4 days the yeast infection would heal itself. Use baby wipes that helps to ease the irritation as well.

I'd highly recommend you check with your health care professional (Dr., Midwife, family doc etc). They'll have the most up to date info on the safety of any med while pregnant. S.

Check with your Doctor first before you use anything like that. I would eat a lot of Organic Yogurt, you can also use plain organic yogurt and apply it to the ichy area. It's a natural way to help get the good bacteria we need into our system. Good Luck and congratualations on your pregnancy.

Hi B.---It's been a long time, but I remember using Monastat while I was pregnant. I used to be plagued by yeast infections until recently. I have changed my diet. Like others have said, yeasts thrive on simple sugars. Cut back on or eliminate white bread, sugar, rice, baked goods and highly sugary foods. Fruits are ok, except you may want to cut back, except for berries, until you get the infection under control.

I would also recommend a good probiotic, but not necessarily from yogurt. I used to be a big milk drinker until I started taking nutrition classes. Go to www.strongbones.org to learn more. If you do consume yogurt, buy the plain kind and mix in you own flavorings. You will get a healthier yogurt that way. Many fruited yogurts have more sugar in them than a candy bar. And I would stay away from artificial sweeteners. They have been shown to be powerful neurotoxins.

You can also consume good probiotic foods like sauerkraut and soy-based tempeh, which is an excellent source of plant based protein and calcium. Allicin, an antioxidant found in onions and garlic, helps to block the growth of yeast. Green and deep yellow veggies and deep yellow and orange fruits are high in beta-carotene (converted to Vit A in the body) keep moucous membranes resistant to infections. Fish and/or flax oils help to reduce inflammation caused by an infection. Low levels of B vitamins, zinc and magnesium are linked to yeast infections. Eat whole grains, dark leafy green veggies, potatoes, bananas, nuts and seeds for B vitamins. Mag. and zinc can be obtained from beans(red, black, pinto, etc.), peas, lentils and brazil nuts.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions, and good luck! In health, D.

AS someone who had one that got pretty bad during pregnancy, I will tell you that you really should go to your OBGYN. I got a cream, and then ended up having to take an oral antibiotic when that didn't work. I also had pre-term labor, which I learned was caused by an infection in my placenta, which could have been caused by the yeast infection. Luckily, my baby was totally fine, albeit five weeks early.

I am not sure about monostate. yeast thrives on sugar so you may want to almost eliminate sugar. That is a bonus to prevent gestational diabetes. You may want to google natural remedies. Yeast is "candida", I think. Check with your doctor. Ask if they know of natural remedies first. they may not have any knowledge of non traditional treatments. Dr. Dikowski MD at Beaumont knows the most natural stuff. Good luck

Hi B.,

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

I have two children and with both of my pregnancies, I did get a few yeast infections each time (not fun!) My doctor told me to buy Monistat, but he told me do NOT insert it directly into my vagina. He said to just spread the cream on the outside area where I was feeling the itching / burning sensations. It actually worked! However, everybody is different and I don't know your medical background, so you may want to check with your doctor (or at least nurse) first. Good luck, and once again, congrats on your pregnancy!!

Beacky....by ALL means ask your Dr. FIRST. He will give you a safe prescription for you too use. Some drugs in even OTC cures can be absorbed through the skin. With your pregnancy it is better to be safe than sorry later! Yeast infections can happen for NO reason other than an imbalance in healthy bacteria. They are simply a pita! and VERY uncomfortable. So I recommend that you ask your Dr. immed!

Don't know if anyone mentioned this yet but you can put plain yogurt in your vagina and that works pretty well. Depending on how bad the yeast infection it may take a few tries and I recommend doing it at night and using a pad - it's messy. Effective though.

I almost think that my doctor told me I couldn't use it cause of it being right in the vagina and risks of infectons and what not. I ended up using diflucan so I'd definately call you dr and find out for sure.
