Wow, I'm Dumb - Laundry Question

So I got my daughter new dark blue jeans and threw them in the washing machine with all the other clothes. You probably know where this is going - everything that was light or white is now various shades of blue. Any suggestions about getting the blue out? Fortunately, I noticed before drying them and now am rewashing them with a shout color catch sheet with oxyclean.

Part 2 - Will I do this every year when it is time to buy new jeans or at some point will I learn my lesson?

Thanks

R.

Don't put any of the stained stuff in the dryer until you rewash it.

To set the dye in new clothes, I soak them in a bucket of cold salt water overnight before washing them - I dissolve as much salt in the water as possible.

I don't sort by color and I very seldom have anything bleed.

You really ought to do some sorting before you start your laundry wxh time. You should wash jeans with other jeans. They will always fade. That's why a lot of people always look like they have on dirty clothes. Their tee shirts all look dingy and gray. It's be cause jeans are made with dyes that will always fade.

So sort your laundry before doing it. I have a hamper for dark (black, navy, red, dark brown) clothes, a hamper for light items I will always add bleach to, one for light towels (Hot water and bleach), one for dark towels (warm water), one for denim, one for perma press/colored garments, and one for bed linens.

This way fabrics that are similar in weight and you can use your dryer more effectively. If you are putting jeans in with normal perma press items you are cooking them a lot longer than they need to be in the dryer. The dryer would most likely be done in about 20 minutes with the lighter weight clothes being in there without a heavy pair of jeans in there too.

Try the ritz color remover it might work -- should work.

You also might try keeping all whites in one area or hamper/basket and all darks in another - maybe this will help you to keep colors separate.

I hope you don't do this every time you buy new jeans. One way to avoid that happening, would be to only wash jeans with other DARK clothing. That's what I do. Denim, or black. That's it. It isn't that hard.
Whites go with whites. Brights/colors with other brights/colors. And towels are separate. :)

Hmmm......I usually wash any lights or whites separate from anything with a dark or vibrant color whether they are new or not. Maybe just straight Oxyclean will help.

I don't know how to take it out but take advantage of it when you buy jeans. I always wash the new ones with other blue stuff so that if the dye transfers it just makes the other clothes look less faded. :o)

I'm not sure how to go about getting the blue out of the other clothes, but I always set my dark blue (indigo dyed) jeans by soaking them in a container filled with vinegar and water for a few hours. Then, I take them out and wash them with other dark colors. After that, they don't bleed anymore.

Good luck.

Always separate laundry by color and if possible weight. Light colors should always be washed separately and checked for spots and stains, pretreat stains, if they don't come out they could be set by the dryer so hang to dry any stained clothing and treat stains before tossing in the washer again.
All dark colors should be washed together. The indigo dye in jeans is unstable and will bleed for several washings. So if you wash reds with jeans they could get dusky and look dirty.
Reds and dark or bright pinks should be washed together separately from other colors.
I have 3 separate laundry baskets light colors, dark colors, reds. I don't wash socks and undies separately. If I wear heavy socks while working in the yard and they get really dirty. I toss them in with the towels. I wash towels and sheets in separate loads, and add bleach.
Weight --- lighter weight clothing dries faster than heavy clothes. They dryer is not good for clothes. So if possible do them in separate loads.
For stubborn stains get a bar of Fels Naptha, in the laundry detergent aisle. Wet the bar and rub stains, if they don't come out soak in a big plastic tub (in the bathtub) or in a utility sink. Sometimes you need to repeat this but it will get stains out.
If the indigo stains do not come out of your load you may need to get a bar of Fels Napths and rub your wet clothes (then rinse under running water) with it until the stains come out.

Added - I went to check - the name is Shout Color Catchers. :)

I haven't had this happen, so I don't know what to tell you about getting the blue out. But I will tell you that I have the Color sheets you put in the washer (they look like the dryer sheets, but they are for putting in the washer.) I always use them when I have newer color shirts or clothes. They always have color in them once the load is done, too.

If I were you, I would wash your jeans inside out and in cold water. Wash with dark clothes ONLY, and put some white vinegar in the water. That helps set the color.

If the clothes that are blue-tinged are white, are they the kind that you can use some bleach with? I hope you didn't put them in the dryer...

Good luck,
Dawn

Not sure on how to get the color out... sorry. However when washing Dark wash or black jeans wash them inside out, and with salt in the water - this will help them keep their color and reduce fading. I would think that the whites could be bleached.

I think the blue is permanent. Sorry. :-(

I always wash new clothes separately, no matter the color, to avoid this problem.

I always separate my laundry. All whites get washed alone.

Darks.

Towels, bedding.

Next time, pre-wash new clothes alone.
