Worried About My Little Girl

My little girl has been getting sick just about every month now since she's been about 5 months old. She's now 15 months and now I'm getting really worried. Before with an illness it was a small cold or an ear infection. This morning she woke up for the sole purpose of throwing up. The vomit was yellow. She's also had a fever for the past few days ranging at around 100.8. I'm not sure if I should take her to the doctor or not. I know that the vomit was just bile because she had an empty stomach and I know that a fever means her body is fighting whatever may be wrong. She keeps food down (for the most part) and she will drink water, pedialyte, just about whatever you put in front of her. Other then the infrequent vomiting, fever and fatigue she plays and laughs. I don't know where to go from here....

What can I do next?

Is she in daycare? Because my daughter was constantly sick. Once she was home with me for the summer, (I am a teacher), she got better. If you are concerned call her ped.

Sounds like she probably has some immunity issues going on. If she has had a lot of antibiotics, then I would look in to getting her a good quality probiotic (you can find some for children at Whole Foods Market) or having her eat yogurt with active live cultures. Also, making sure that she drinks purified water quite frequently to flush out her system, eating lots of colorful vegetables and fruits, and nut butters would help. If you get on the internet and google "immunity boosting food" you will find some reputable websites that tell you about which foods are considered to be the best for boosting immunity. I particularly like Dr. Andrew Weil's website for this information.

Hope your daughter feels better soon. Happy 4th of July!

I would also think that there is definitely an immune issue here. From a holistic perspective, what is her diet like? Does she eat sugary foods, lots of prepared foods. Does she eat plenty of raw and cooked veggies and fruits, grains, etc? A food allergy could have contributed to the possible immune issue. I'd suggest either a good naturpath, and/or an acupuncturist. This way, you are getting symptom relief, plus getting to the source of the problem.
As far as the fever, it's low, so, I tend to avoid treating it until much higher. You are correct, her body is working to burn off whatever is foreign. Hope you find a solution that is right for your family.

Other than vomiting, fatigue and fever your infant is fine? Are you kidding? Go to the pediatrician, now! Those are serious symptoms.

You don't say if your little girl is in daycare (mine got sick frequently the first year in daycare), but if you are worried you should call your pediatrician and ask them what they think.

I would talk with you doctor about your concerns. If your current doctor won't take the time to listen to your concerns, find a new one. This is very frequent illness for a child. And a fever, even low grade, that goes on for several days is a concern.

Sounds like her immune system is out of whack. Take a look at what is in her diet. I would sit down with her MD and look at her history. I have had my kids on Juice Plus+ now for almost 7 years. My son who is now 8 was sick all the time as a baby. I knew his immune system was suffering because I had immune issues. I did a lot of research and knew we were not getting the 9 to 13 servings of fruits and veggies eachday. I met a Holistic nurse who introduced me to JP+. It is 17 fruits and veggies in a capsule or soft chew minus the water, salt and sugar. It is just fruits and veggies! My kids are hardly ever sick and I know it is because their immune systems are balanced. I also love all the research that has been done on JP+. Check it out www.StudiesOnJuicePlus.com
Good luck and I hope your daughter feels better soon!

I would take her to an allergist.

When my son was 11m old he started getting high fevers, colds and ear infections. He'd get on medicine for the ear infection, be better for 3 days and then it would start over. This would happen every 3weeks. Eventually he got to the point where he would start vomitting in addtion to the other symptoms. It got to the point where I could track each symptom on the calendar. W - sniffles, Th - high fever would start, Sat - ear infection... I'd take him to the ER and they'd say it was just a virus, let it runs its course.

Finally one time he broke out in hives all over his neck and back. I took him to the allergist and it turned out that he was allergic to a fruit that his daycare offered every other Wed. We took that fruit out of his diet, and he's only been sick a handful of times since. He's now 9y.

Does she go to childcare or is she around other children frequently? This is pretty normal for a child that is exposed to other children on a regular basis. She may be getting little viruses on a regular basis. Her immune system will eventually catch up and build immunity to all these little bugs. The bugs can lead to additional issues like ear infections and/or sinus infections due to the mucus build-up being a good place for bacteria to grow...expecially in the little tiny nasal passages and ear canals of babies.

Do not be afraid to treat the fever with some infant's tylenol (generic is still available in stores...the name brand was recalled) every six hours with the dosage recommended by your pediatrician.

Otherwise, unless the fever gets high, like 102-104, I wouldn't worry too much. your daughter will have a good strong immune system once she has been exposed to all these little bugs.

BTW: allergies rarely cause fevers, and if they do they are usually severe fevers, not mild ones like your daughter is experiencing, so I wouldn't worry about allergies...

If you are truly concerned, then please go see your daughter's pediatrician. Even if it is what I described above, peace of mind can go a long way for both you and your daughter!

If you think something isn't right, you go to the docs over and over and over until you get an answer. If you pediatrician can't or won't diagnose, you go to another and another and another.
Nobody knows your child like you do.
If your gut tells you something is wrong - you go with it - always.

I would definitely take her to the doctor. Could be that she keeps getting sick. Could be she has some sort of allergy (environmental, food, etc.). Could be a combination of both so it's hard to tell what's what. If you take her to the doctor and tell him/her basically what you told us, any doctor would look into it to find the answer. If not, get a second opinion.

Hope you find some answers soon!

It never hurts to talk to the dr. that is what they are there for.

Does she eat yogurt? My son eats one a day and has luckily been pretty healthy.

Offer lots of fruit and veggies, that will help build up her immune system and lots of sleep. They need 11-12 hrs at night and 1-3 hr nap.

There is a stomach virus going around right now. She might have it?

Is she getting the same type of illness every month? If so, I'd discuss with the pediatrician who can run some tests or refer to a specialist.

Could she possibly have allergies that are causing the "cold" symptoms...and could possibly be responsible for the waking up to vomit (When we who are blessed with allergies lay down to sleep the discharge runs down our throat leading to sore throats, coughing and possible in a baby, vomiting). Keep a food diary and see if there is a connection between something she eats and the onset of the symptoms. Or see if she gets the "cold" after you have spent a day outside...where something that she might be allergic to could be in the air.
Keep her hydrated, keep an eye on the temp and as the other Mama said...go with your gut...you know your little girl better than anyone else!!!
