Worried About Lump on Daughters Neck

I know that it can take time for a lymph node to go back down. Being that the doctor told you not to worry about it, I would assume it is nothing to worry about.

It could also be an innocuous cyst, but I think he would have told you that if he thought that was the case.

My nephew has the same kind of lump in his groin. It's been there for almost a year now. My SIL had it checked out a few weeks after noticing it. All his tests (blood work, ultrasound sound, chest X-ray) were clear. Her pediatrician said that its normal, especially in children, for lymph nodes to stay enlarged for several weeks or months. They're not concerned unless the overlying skin is red, the gland is irregularly shaped or larger than a cherry, seems attached to the skin and is not movable, or is very painful to the touch more than a week or two. Sometimes they never return to the previous size and will always be somewhat larger than the surrounding or corresponding gland. Also, squeezing and poking at it will prevent it from returning to normal. So as much as you want to keep checking it, you should leave it alone as much as possible. I'm a picker and prodder and I have a hard time leaving all that kind of alone...hopefully you can control yourself better than I can!!

Almost forgot to mention... My nephew had not had any recent illness or injury that would cause swelling of the lymph nodes in the groin (at least none that my SIL noticed), so the doctor said its probably just the way he's built.

My daughtet has one the also near her jaw below her ear. I also had it checked and they said the same thing. A swollen lymph node and it should go down on its own at sometime. Seems like it must be somewhat common.

My son has the same thing... He's 6 and has had it since 2 years old... Small, moves around and hasn't changed in size. Doesn't hurt him at all. Doctor said it's nothing to worry about... He "could" have it for life..... I was worried in the beginning, I'm definitely not anymore :)

I had a lump as you described for years when I was a teenager. My pediatrician assured my mom it was nothing and it was nothing. Listen to your doc.

My daughter has had hers since 18 months old after fighting a cold. About 6 months after it didn't go down, my Dr had me take her in to get her blood drawn just for my reassurance basically. He's been telling me all along that it is fine. All tests came back normal. From what I've been told is that some kids/adults just have their lymph nodes close to the surface. I found out my MIL is like this.

She is now 5 and still has it last time I checked. The things I've been told to look out for are 1. watch for growth. 2. watch for multiple lumps and 3. watch for abnormal behavior - like if she is sleepy all the time

It sounds like she has a swollen lymph node. When lymph nodes are working overtime to fight off infections, they do get swollen.

My youngest son's lymph nodes can get so swollen they look like the nodules on Frankenstein....not kidding. He isn't running a fever, he isn't sick, his body is working.

I know how scary it is to see a lump on your child. I really do! Over the next several months - while Spring turns into Summer and the pollen runs over her, she will most likely still have the lump.

make sure she drinks a good amount of water to help keep her body flushed out.

My son had that same thing. It was due to several colds and infections. It went away but it took a long time.

As long as it is movable, it's nothing to worry about. I would definitely keep an eye (well, a hand) on it to make sure it doesn't change or become stationary.

But, for peace of mind, maybe get a second opinion.
