Hi ladies..hoping you can help. After 9 years a dog and 2 kids our carpet is shot so we're wanting to replace with either laminate or wood and wanting to get some estimates. My question is 2 parts...can anyone give me their opionions pros/cons of wood vs laminate and also any suggestions on who to use to install and any ?'s i should ask?
We just had empire come out and i wasn't impressed they seemed high and very pushy. Costco is coming out at the end of the week but not sure who else to compare with home depot seems too much like costco does anyone have another suggestion of someone that's competitive in pricing?
Thanks for your help!!

We used a place called iDeal Floors in Plano and we went with laminate (because of the kids and dogs). Laminate is much harder, does not dent as easily and was a lot more cost effective. Wood has it's benefits too, but I'm very happy with our choice. The only thing that has taken some getting used to is the "dust bunnies" that gather in the corners...I assume they were spread amongst the carpet fibers and just not as noticable before. I sweep and vaccuum and attack the corners with the Dust Buster a LOT.

Hope Depot does a great job on flooring as well, we just used them to replace all the carpet in our bedrooms. They had some of the best prices on wood and laminate when we were looking.

I used North Dallas Floors on Plano Parkway and 75 and they did a great job...were very honest about the sq footage and were reasonable. I got Pergo and love it but I would get the hand scraped laminate if I had to do it over again! I hope this helps!

We have had both. we started with the engineered hardwood and loved it at the time; very durable and looked beautiful; however, with the engineered/laminate if you ever have any damage it cannot be fixed. we had a water leak that got under the floors and they had to be torn up and replaced. that's when we went with the real hardwood floors. if anything ever happens to them they can be sanded and re stained to match so you don't need to replace everything. we have had ours for about 6 years, have kids and a dog (lab) and they still look wonderful. we did the hand-scraped, with the grain so not so rustic but still has character. we used Mike with Greater Dallas Floors. very pleased with his work!!!

I've been contemplating the same thing, but have decided to go with handscraped wood. It has a rustic look and since it is artifically "scraped" this means that any scrapes from children or pets wouldn't really be noticeable. Plus, wood is better than laminate from a resale standpoint.

I recommend Home Floors in Frisco (233 Preston Road, Suite 600), ###-###-####. Last year they installed tile in our kitchen, 3 bathrooms and laundry room and did a great job. And when my in-laws chose a different contractor for their tile and wood floor install, who then royally messed up, Home Floors took over the job and did a great job. My only suggestion is to get quotes from at least three providers. Home Floors did not intially offer us the best price, but when we told them the lower price offered by someone else, they came down in price.

Wood floors should hold a better re-sale value for you in the future.
