Wondering When I Will Get a Period???

I have just weaned my 7 month old from nursing to formula in hopes of trying to get pregnant again. I have yet to have a period since the delivery. Should I expect one now that he's weaned? Am I still ovulating even though I haven't cycled? How do I calculate my ovulation if there is no cycle to go by?

I breastfed exclusively for a year and got my period when my daughter was eight months old. Everyone is different, but you should get it soon. And yes, you are more than likely still ovulating.

Well first of all no you are not selfish for switching form nursing to formula feeding. I wish that all women understood for some of us switching to formula is a decision made base on many factors. People have no right to judge and condem. Yes having pregnacies back to back can be very dificult for your body, but you need to make the decision based on what works for you and your family. My children range from 5 to 21 months my there are 2 years between my first 2 and 15 mos. between the second 2 1/2and the was literally no difference in how I carried the last 2.As to when you will get your period, who really knows. I have had 3 and done things differently each time. Yes you can ovulate and not have a period but ususally the two do go hand in hand. I HIGHLY recomend the book "taking charge of your fertility". It sounds like it is a book about trying to concive but really is just about how to learn your cycle. It is a wealth of information so much so that when my daughter hits puberty it will be one of the first things I get her.

Hi J.,

Well everyone is different when it comes to having a baby. Our bodies act so crazy after giving birth. I would talk to you Doctor about a hormone shot to get you regulated on your cycle. I don't think you ovulate if you have no period. But I am not 100% sure on that. I started my period 2 months after my daughter was born and I was still nursing. So nursing doesn't mean you won't start your period or you can't get pregnant. Because I know several of woman that got pregnant nursing and had there periods. Are you sure your not pregnant now? When you do figure everything out and get on your cycle there is a website www.ladytimer.com and this will keep track of your period as well as ovulation. I love it!! We are not trying to get pregnant right now so it lets me know when I am ovulating so I can stay clear of my husband. Although its hard for him to stay clear. : ) LOL! Hope all works out! Good Luck!

Once you ovulate, a period will always follow unless of course you happened to conceive. There is a great book called "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by Toni Weschler. You will learn how to know when you are fertile and when to time intercourse for pregnancy achievement. You also learn a heck of a lot about the female reproductive system in general. I didn't realize I was so in the dark before reading this book.

Good luck!

you should already have a period since the birth of your child. Maybe since you want to get pregnant you never know if you could already be pregnant since no cycle.

If you are serious about getting pregnant again, you can check with your doctor. They can do a sonogram to determine where you are in your ovulation cycle (by the size of your follicle on your ovary). However, I think you will start your period soon. My daughter is 5.5 months old and I have started to wean (less breastfeeding during the day) and I started my period two weeks ago.

I was still nursing a six month old and got pregnant. I did not have a period in between. So yes you are still ovulating even though you are not cycling. I was not trying to get pregnant so I was three months along before I found out ( I was still nursing). But at least I was still taking prenatal vitamins. Good luck

J.,

I'm sure you'll start in a month or two. I didn't start again until 8 months after delivery and I still breastfed up to 11 months. It's really difficult to calculate ovulation without a cycle and with breastfeeding, you typically don't ovulate. Nature's own birth control. But, checking cervical fluid changes will give you an idea of how your body is working and if you are close to ovulation or a change in your cycle. Also, get the book, Taking Charge of Your Fertility, by Toni Weschler, MPH. She really gives you great insight on when to conceive by getting to know your body better. There is even a computer program that you can use to give yourself the best chance of conceiving or to use natural birth control. Good luck and I hope this helps!

Yes, more than likely your cycle will start again soon. I nursed my third child for 13 months, and never had a period the enitre time I was nursing him, but exactly one month after he was weaned, I was having one (all be it the only one, I ended up preggers again the next month, so one period in about 3 years because I nursed the next baby 13 montha also). Your cycle should return soon, and yes you probably are ovulating, just not regularly.

I've nursed three kiddos (I'm 37 now). In my experience once I completely stopped nursing (I nursed thru the 8th month with each) it took a full month to six weeks to start my cycles again. You can still ovulate even though you're not showing a period. (I even had a friend start her period while she was still nursing). It may sound a little crazy (money wise)but you could buy a few ovulation kits from the grocery store and just start using those to see if it registers an ovulation. I acutually used one kit to get pregnant with my second--clearly they work! If you don't have a period by the full second month after the nursing has stopped, you might want to visit your Obgyn. Good luck!

OK, I would end up in the nut house if I had babies that close together, so you are either much braver or crazier than me (my second child is 6 months now and I think I would throw up if I found out I was pregnant again so soon!). But, you probably have an easier going baby than my 2 are. Yes, you can ovulate without having a period, and yes you could be pregnant already. But, there is a very easy and very cheap way to tell when you're ovulating. Take your temperature! Take it for a month, every morning when you first wake up before you eat or drink anything. When you ovulate, your core temperature rises about 1 degree. So over the period of a month, you'll see what your temp is normally, and suddenly you'll see 3 or 4 days where it's higher; you're ovulating! Have sex every other night this week for best odds; I conceived my first son taking my temperature (although my cycle is regular enough, I can just count days, but I understand that you don't have a way to count right now; the temperature will tell you!) You can use any thermometer, but they also sell thermometers in the section with the pregnancy tests (this will be much cheaper than an ovulation kit).

It has been several years since I had my last baby; however, it was about 2 months after I weaned them that my period started again. It is possible that you are ovulating. I am sorry that I do not know how to tell when without suggesting that you buy an ovulation kit, but that could get expensive. I think they are only good for 7-10 days. Hopefully you will start soon. I would suggest that you not try and get pregnant the first month your period returns. You will be more likely to double ovulate. This happened to me and we have twins.

I didn't have a period while nursing, but I've heard you can get pregnant anyway, and I got pregnant with my second right away, and although I really didn't want them that close, had them 14 months apart, (which I wouldn't recommend ha) I was so busy keeping things out of the one year olds mouth and seeing what she was in to that I didn't have time to enjoy the baby like I did the first one. She just seemed to get fed changed and then run to see what the other was up to at that age. Keeps you running for sure. But I guess in answer to your question, I think you could get pregnant, but I imagine you will have a period soon if you have quit nursing, unless your already are.

If I were you, I would head to the drug store right now and get a pregnancy test! I conceived our 3rd child (I am currently pregnant) while I was attempting to wean our youngest. You can ABSOLUTELY conceive while breastfeeding...get a test and let us know!

J.,

You should still be ovulating, even though you're not getting a period, which is why they say that you can get pregnant while you're still nursing.

I just weaned my twins from nursing not long ago. I weaned them in March and I didn't get a period until May (Mother's Day, to be exact). It was about 6 weeks for me to get my period again.

Hope that helps! Best of luck.

You might also talk to your doctor about getting pregnant so soon after the previous baby. I'm not a doctor, but I've read a few things about increased risk to you and the baby when you don't give your body a chance to really recover... at least 18 months between kids is supposed to be ideal as far as all that goes. Of course there are a million variables with this kind of thing, and I know plenty of people who didn't wait and have perfect, healthy kids... just something to think about! Good luck!

It took me about 2 months to start a cycle after brest feeding both of mine (4 yr boy and 15mon. girl) You should have one in the next couple of months..... Yes you are still ovulating! I wouldn't try to calculate anything, I was always told to have sex every other day and not matter what you will more than likely hit that window! Good luck!

I breastfed all 3 of my kiddos - exclusively and got my period back at 6 weeks with each one. You can get pregnant even before your period resumes -

I don't think the comment was warranted about being selfish b/c you weaned your 7 month old- this is a support group - not a mommy-bashing group. Decisions like this are personal - and what is right for one mommy might not be right for another.... just my 2 cents - I am an ob/gyn nurse and could offer more information to you if you want...

Just wanted you to know that I got pregnant when my son was 6 or 7mo old and my body handled it fine! God has His hand on all things and if it's meant to be it will happen, even if it hasn't been 12 months!! Just ignore the negative remarks! In addition, your precious baby boy got the most important of the breast milk with the collostrum at birth. Also, when he turned 6mo old, his own immune system kicked in, so the immunities in your breast milk were no longer necessary for him. You should be commended for breast feeding at all! Good luck to you J.! Let us all know when you get pregnant!!!

I began weaning my daughter areound 1 year and did not fully start my cycle until I had completely weaned her which was when she was around 15 mos, it came just like before, so just give it time and honey it will come, it shocked me to see my period after not having it during the pregnancy and my time of breastfeeding.
