Wondering What Bottles to Get for Newborn Expecting in January

Hello, I've always breastfed my kids, am expecting my fourth and really wanting the freedom to give a bottle this time, even if its once a night for a break. I know there are new plastic rules, things that work better than others. Looking for input on good bottles to try a newborn on so I can start right away. Thanks

I've used Dr. Brown's and Avent - bpa free plastic. (Dr. Brown's has glass now too.) I liked the Dr. Brown's very much but they have a two part vent, which ended up making my husband a little crazy when he washed bottles. So, with baby two we got Avent bottles which have been fine. The only thing about the Avent that bothered me, is that they sometimes leak from the screw collar. It doesn't always happen, but sometimes if the nipple isn't seated right it leaks. It's an easy fix but I hate when the bottle leaks. And if you're bleary it can leak quite a bit before you notice. Having said that, I like them and they have fewer parts to clean. Congrats on baby #4!

Hi E. -

You have some great responses on types of bottles, but I will advise you not to go out and buy all one kind. Every baby has their own preference of bottle type and nipple. You may want to buy one bottle of each kind that you were thinking of, and go from there. My son would NOT take to any of the bottles that my daughter had, and we ended up having to go with Dr. Brown's bottle, with the playtex tricut nipple because he had reflux and he was on a thicker formula that the normal Dr. Brown nipple would not work.

So if they dont take to one, try another. Even if it takes a few tries.

Good luck.

I had to stop breastfeeding due to illness when my baby was 10 days old and she had to go cold turkey to bottles. She bottle fed until 4 weeks old and then switched back to breastfeeding with little trouble. We tried advent but had the best luck with Dr. Browns. You can purchase different size nipples and increase as she gets older. They also have an insert to eliminate unneccessary air intake. Most bottles are BPA free now so the plastics shouldn't be a concern.

I like the ones that you use plastic liners. It seems to get the air out and resembles a breast for easier transition. I used them with my daughter and nursed her.

Hi , I had to learn the bottle ropes this time around as some meds I was on made breastfeeding out of the question. I found that the Avent (I think they are made by Gerber) along with some 0-3 slow drip nipples (definitely Gerber) worked wonders for air ingestion which is a real pain in the bootwa when it come to bottlefeeding. Wish you the best, sister!

You should contact a le leche league leader or lactation consultant on this one. I know that you only want to introduce a bottle after breastfeeding is fully established(three months or so), otherwise the baby will get nipple confusion and have a hard time nursing at the breast. My good fried just had this same problem. She introduced a bottle on the second day of her daughter being born(bad advice from a delivery nurse), and her baby got very confused had a very hard time learning to nurse. Her lactation consultant told her to put the bottles away. I would keep the bottle away for a few months. Good luck

I tried quite a few different bottles and ended up loving the playtex drop in. I think they end up costing a little more in the long run (not significantly though) but the the fact they were much easier was worth the cost. Good luck and congrats!

Firstly, don't offer the bottle "right away" to a newborn or else you risk encountering "nipple confusion." I'm sure you already knew that though, considering you've successfully breastfed three other kids!! :)

As for the bottle recommendation. My advice would be to wait until the baby is born, and then try a bunch of different ones. Each baby is different and has their own preferences. I put bottles on my registry. They looked so sci-fi and we toted as being the best! Turns out, not only did my son never really take to the bottle (why would he when i was always around), but our BEST success was with those cheapie old school gerber bottles I got at the stop and shop on a whim.

We have been using the Born Free bottles and sippy cups. They are expensive but are very good and our daughter loves them. They are BPA free and are sold everywhere. Congratulations and good luck!!

Every baby can be different and some like bottles that others hate....hard to say. I'd wait until the little bundle of joy is born and then experiement. I breastfeed and pumped when I went back to work, and my daughter did just fine with the medela bottles that came w/ the pump (also sold seperatly). I've also had luck w/ the cheapy ones sold at Walgreens; 4pack for around $5, they are BPA free too!

Congratulations on your little girl :-)

hey. i also breastfed, and its okay to give your baby a bottle, even if you want to pump breastmilk and put breastmilk in it.
i would recommend Playtex Drop-In bottles. they give NO AIR to your baby AND the Nipple simulates the breast for easy transition from Bottle to Breast.
one big negative to these bottles is that the Drop-Ins are only usable once, so you have to keep buying more and more, so its really money in the trash (except its alot easier for you), so i made the switch to Avent bottles. i enjoy the Avent bottles and my daughter takes to them easily.
i am also not breastfeeding anymore, i switched to Avent a while after i stopped breastfeeding so i am not sure how easy the transition is from bottle to breast.

hope i helped.

i really enjoyed the Playtex bottle systems. they are BPA-free - which is GOOD. and they have a drop-in system which makes it alot easier to keep clean. they have all different styles, and sizes. i did the drop-in system but i heard the vent system is good too. that's what i used for my 1st and plan on using it again for my 2nd. good luck.

Bottles that are BPA free I second Dr Browns nipples. Do not wait longer than a month or 6weeks to introduce the bottle. As long as breastfeeding is going well. Good latch etc. you could start as early as 3-4 weeks.

Happy Birthing day.

Born Free Bottles! I absolutely recommend them. Free of toxins and really easy on a baby's belly. They are expensive but totally worth it. Level 1 nipples are good for newborns.
