Wondering About Iuds

Hi, I've recently had to stop the pill due to the numerous migraine headaches I've been getting. My OB GYN suggested an IUD as a more reliable, hassle-free alternative form of birth control. My husband and I aren't planning on having any more children any time soon and if we changed our minds I can just have it taken out...so it sounds like a good idea. I'm just a little freaked out because my sister had a horrible experience with her IUD after the birth of her daughter (who's just a month older than my daughter) and I was just looking for other moms who may have had experience with having an IUD and I'm just curious to hear what others experiences are and if they would recommend it.

What can I do next?

Hello C.!

I have had the IUD since 1999 and I have not experience any detramental side affects. It seems to be one of the better birth control. I did have one Girlfriend who did get pregnant anyway. Nothing is 100% except abstinance.

I have read good things about IUDs. BUT a friend of mine became pregnant with one in place. The doctors attributed the failure of the device to my friend losing a significant amount of weight in a short period of time which caused incorrect positioning of the IUD. It was a pretty scary scenario. She had a miscarriage at 12 weeks. I am unsure if the miscarriage was directly related to the IUD. Please discuss the risk of pregnancy with your doctor and what your choices would be if pregnancy occurs before getting it placed.

Good morning, my name is J. and I am 29 years old. I have 2 daughters 6 and 3. In June of 2006 I got the IUD and I have had no troubles with it. I would recommend it to anyone with headaches, bad cramps, moody and lots of bleeding. I had all of those symptons. I feel so much better and I am so less moody and craby. If you have any other questions pleae contact me. Good luck.

take care-
J.

The IUD is no more like a "mini abortion" than the birth control pill. The only people that should have a say in your birth control method are yourself, yourself, and yourself. And maybe a knowledgeable health care provider to answer any questions. Oh, and your husband, I suppose :).

Hi C. ~

I've had my IUD in for about a yr now. Only once was I concerned that I might be pregnant...I went a month without my period, but turns out it was just all the stress I was under. Aside from that I have had no other issues or complaints. I love it. No pills, no patch (I was on the patch when I got pregnant for my son) no hassel! I have a girlfriend who has had hers in for four years now and she loves it as well. That's actually how I heard of it. My midwife says she has been recommending it and have had patients using it for 14 years and in that time she has never had anyone get pregnant or have any negative side effects. I would totally recommend it.

I had an IUD put in after i had my daughter I had quite a bit of cramping when my doctor put it in the doctor said your body wasnts to reject it so it causes some cramping well i almost fainted she said that my cramping was the most severe she has ever delt with and so they kept me there for awhile took some ibprofen and went home, then went to work after. The first few months it was great lighter periods no cramps, I thought this is great! Well about 4 or five months into it i was getting Migraines, and severe cramping, these cramps were worse than giving labor it got to the point where i blacked out (while i was alone with my daughter)After that i went to the doctor again, She got a little worried because one of her co-workers had a patient with the severe cramping like me and the IUD had punctured her uterus, she had to have surgery to remove it. Anyway I had mine removed luckily with no problems and I havent had any problems since. The doctor said most likely i was quite sensitive to the progesterone it releases. I personally would'nt recommend it. But then again, It could work great for you. I wish there was a way to tell without actually having to go through with it to find out how your body will react to it. Hope this helps and good luck!

Hi, Just wanted to let you know that I have had the IUD for a little over 4 years now and I love it. I started on it after the birth of my twin girls. I like it because unlike the other contraceptives I don't have to remeber to take a pill or change any patch or ring. I forget that it's even there except once a month your supposed to check your strings and make sure there in place. I haven't had any problems with it. The only downfall is when I first recieved the IUD I had heavier periods for a little while and you tend to have some brownish discharge for a little while after your period also, but that's all stopped now and things are fine. Hope this heps!

I don't have one myself, I tried but my doctor wont give me one do to a heart problem. But I have a friend who has had one now for 3 years and she loves hers. She has the 10 year one and hasn't had one problem with it. My sister is also getting one next month and is very much looking forward to it. The only thing my firend said was to make sure they do an unltrasound to make sure it is place correctly or you can still end up pregnant. Other than that I hear that they are great and wish that I could get one.

I had an IUD in for almost a week. I ended up in the ER due to extremem cramping and migraines. I was practically bedridden that week and ended up having it taken out. I don't want to scare you but I hope this helps you in some way. Good luck with your decision.

After I had my daughter, I asked my doctor about getting an IUD. He told me so many people have had problems with them that he will not put one in. He did refer me to a doc that would if I wanted, but I trust his judgement, so I dodn't get it. He said some people have no problems at all, but some have tons, so it's hit and miss. Good luck!

HI, I really don't know why it works for others and others is doesn't, I got pregnant off the paraguard IUD just after a year with it on, and of course it had to be removed, I have a friend who took hers out after a couple of years and conceived just fine, and another friend who has had hers on for 7-8 years and has had no problems. I never had any problems with it on, but just that after a year it gave out. I tried the depo. but gained alot of weight and my sister started loosing her hair and one of my friend is on the depo and is perfectly fine. I guess it depends how your body takes it.

My Aunt cannot have children because the IUD moved and caused scar tissue and quite a mess. Have you looked into Nuvaring? I hear it's the latest greatest. The other thing you need to take into account is how many people still loved their IUD after it was removed so they could conceive (if you are thinking of having more). I thought the Depo shot was great!!! Then I went off it, got married and couldn't conceive for 6 years becuase it totally screwed up my body. It happens a lot according to my RE. My body is still not functioning/cycling properly due to after effects...luckily it only took me 2 years to get pregnant this time instead of 6.

Using an IUD is different for everyone. I'm partial to blood clots, so I had the Mirena one put it, and my hair started falling out. I happened to be a part of a small percentage that this happens to.

If my sister had physical problems with it, I would probably not use it. If it was just due to it being uncomfortable when they first put it in or something like that - I might still do it.

Take a look at the different types and the warnings and see if you would feel comfortable with it or not. It is your body, and you should go with what ever makes you feel comfortable.

I spoke with my OB/GYN at length about options other than the pill. I stopped the pill because my PMS was OUT OF CONTROL. I decided on the NuvaRing instead of an IUD and am very happy with it. You leave it in for 21 days and take it out for 7 days while you have your period. This is my third month and I have had no side effects other than breast tenderness. I decided not to do the IUD because it would have cost me at least $500 and was more long-term than I am interested in. Hope this gives you other ideas! Good luck!
