He will not even know it is his birthday. Winnie the Pooh is classic. Elmo is annoying. My son and I read Winnie the Pooh together - it is for children - not for girls or boys specifically (there is actually only 1 female character in Winnie the Pooh - Kanga and you only know that because she has a pouch and a child). Since the party really is for you, do whichever one you want.

At one year of age the party is for you all too. I don't really know any 1 year old that has such a defined taste they would be opposed to Pooh vs. Elmo - really?!
I like One & done's suggestion of making the decore pooh themed, but the smash cake for son Elmo.
Why pick a fence on this one - have fun and celebrate!

I would go with Elmo - not because "Pooh Bear is for girls" (which is NOT true - Christopher Robin is a BOY, hello!), but your little guy will probably love it. This is one of those examples where we can want what we want, and have all these ideas and plans, but what makes our kids happy could be something totally different. It's a birthday party for HIM. Congratulations on his first birthday!

His birthday His choice. Elmo.

Tell your husband, Pooh is not for girls. It was written for a little boy by his father. It's about the adventures of a boy and his stuffed bear for crying out loud. How could that be aimed at girls specifically?

I think you got to plan the baby's room and baby shower, now it's your child's turn to pick what HE likes. If it's Elmo, then so be it.

I never saw Mickey Mouse coming for a little one. But that's what our son LOVES. So instead of the Old MacDonald/Farm theme I'd thought we'd do for his second birthday, we did Mickey Mouse and his face lit up!

Well, it is his birthday, not yours, so if your child likes Elmo, I would do Elmo.

Too funny. I'm having the same dilemma! My son's party is in two weeks and I don't know if I should get decor that I like or what I know he likes (Elmo and Mickey Mouse) Honestly, I don't think he's old enough to really care. So hey, it's probably the only birthday you'll get to decide, so if it's important to you, go with Pooh. I'm with you, I just bought the Winnie the Pooh movie "for my son" - but really for me. :)

If it were my birthday, the answer would definitely have to be Pooh Bear! But it does sound to me like your birthday boy would prefer Elmo. Since it's his birthday, I think you should go for the one he prefers.
Since you say you received a bunch of Pooh bear things at your shower, he's most likely been exposed to Pooh and will include him in his play and love him too so give him the Elmo experience this year. That doesn't mean you couldn't buy him a nice book about Pooh bear as a gift. In my opinion, there is no such thing as too many books about Winnie the Pooh, and most of them are quite educational.

I never thought of Pooh Bear being for just girls at all. I was the same as you, got lots of Pooh stuff at my baby shower, my son wore pooh overalls home from the hospital, his room was all Pooh Bear theme...now it's trucks and his younger brother has the pooh stuff, it's all nice light neutral colors. His 1st bday party was Pooh themed as well, for his 2nd bday party we did Elmo. I'd go with Pooh.

My son started off loving Elmo, and then he became a Pooh freak! As he has gotten older, he isn't into Pooh as much. But he is five years old, and his lovey is still the Pooh bear that we got him when he was three. He sleeps in Pooh PJs (we call them Pooh-jamas) and has Pooh on his sheets and comforter. The Winnie the Pooh movie was the only one he has ever been able to sit through in the theater. He prefers to play with his Thomas trains and Angry Birds, but he always goes back to Pooh for comfort.

That being said, I would do Elmo for your son. The look on his face when he says his favorite character will make it more than worth it. Also, I think that years later, seeing pictures of his first birthday with Elmo is a nice memory of this time when he loved Elmo so much. It's who he is RIGHT NOW, and you will want to remember that.

You have plenty of time to get him into Pooh bear. My son had a Pooh bear party for both his 3rd and 4th birthdays. :)

Awww...my oldest son liked Elmo so we did an Elmo party for his first birthday and then Pooh for his second. For the younger boys, we did Pooh for both of their first birthdays. Either one is fine, but if the sight of Elmo makes him excited, then I would go with that.

I made a Winnie the Pooh cupcake cake for my guy's 1st birthday (a pic is on my profile.) For his 2nd birthday i made an elaborate Elmo cupcake cake, sorry no pictures, the camera was destroyed that night in an accident :(

Winnie the Pooh is for both boys and girls, (Christopher Robin is Pooh's friend) but if your son loves Elmo I would go with that for his party.

I had my heart set on my daughter being Little Red Riding Hood for Halloween, because she would have been adorable. We went to the store and she saw the Elmo custome and Little Red Riding Hood went right out the door. We had a very cute little Elmo for Halloween...

First birthdays are easy. You all get to choose. Your baby isn't really going to care.

The original A. A. Milne Pooh is a male bear, owned by a boy, so obviously it's not a girl thing.

Elmo is very popular, too. My youngest granddaughter is a huge Elmo fan. She has an Elmo for the house and an Elmo for the car, just so he won't be left behind. Elmo's advantage over Pooh is that he gets more television coverage.

So why don't you tell your husband it should be Pooh this year, because it'll probably be Elmo next year?

If your baby really likes Elmo, I would go with Elmo. You already got your pooh bear goodies for his shower, his turn :)

But actually, I am the kind of person that would mix the theme, why not Pooh AND Elmo? Have neutral color decor, like light blue and red, and then have elements of Pooh and Elmo. Pooh and Elmo can be holding hands on the cake or something, Pooh and Elmo balloons. And Pooh is totally not just for girls.

Um, Pooh isn't just for girls. Why on earth would he think that? My second boy had a Pooh 1st birthday -so sweet! I loved Pooh as a child, and my boys love him. If your child will go nuts over an Elmo party, that would be nice, but he won't remember it, so this year if you want to do Pooh, do it! In a few years he will have very definite preferences for his birthday theme, so do what you want while you can!

If you send out pooh bear invitations you might (will) get a lot of pooh bear stuff. I do not like pooh bear, but since you do this will be the last year you could pull it off since a 2 year old boy will most likely not be into it.

Well, I am the wrong person to ask because I dislike commercially themed parties. For that reason, I perfer Pooh who is a book character foremost and has some more traditional pretty themes and elements you can include. Pooh is also cuddlier and warmer and cuter than Elmo. (No offense, Elmo!) And Pooh is NOT for girls. That is just dumb. So, I am totally on your side on this one.

Where I get stuck is your baby... he likes Elmo more, so I think he wins. And it doens't matter that he won't remember, it's still his experience.
