Will You Please Help Name Our Puppy? (Jff)

Hello ~~ I know there are a lot of important questions here but I'd like to ask your opinion -- I got a cute little 10 week puppy on Mother's Day which I picked out (this wasn't the only thing I received) and he is a Shiz-Poo (sp) and is cute as a button. He is a sandy, tawny color with a black tipped tail and tipped ears. He's going to stay small probably about 6 to 8 pounds. He's very sweet and stays close by me all the time and seems pretty smart and lively but easy going.

How about throwing out some ideas for a name? Every name we come up with just doesn't seem right or someone in the family doesn't like it. I'd like us all to agree if possible. Also would you name a boy dog a fem name? I like the name Mitzi but it seems fem. for a male dog.

Here are the names we've come up with so far: Skyler, Tawny, Sandy, Sanders, Buttons, Biscuit, Sammi, Tanner, CoCo and Deszi. I think Mitzi is cute. But all of these are cute I guess. I hope this doesn't seems like a silly post to you and if you think this is riduculous please don't mention it. Just thought it'd be fun to get some ideas and maybe we'll find a name that will stick.

Thanks everyone.

So What Happened?

Hi Everyone ~~ Gosh, I can't believe there are so many posts for this question -- it's just great. I love all the answers and I smiled and laughed and said hmmm, didn't think of that --- Thanks so much to you all. What fun it was for all of us to read these.

We're now trying to decide between Baxter, Scooter and Scout.

Thank you and our little doggie thanks you too.

Reese or Reeses (from the diminutive size and colorings).

Or if you want to get all fancy with the middle name - Reeses Pieces Smith :)

Okay, Sanders seems adorable to me! That is definitely my first pick! I agree that Mitzi is to feminine. What about something super masculine to counteract his cuteness like Butch or Spike or Andre (like the giant).

We like old fashioned, strong names (no offense to people with kids with these names) - Hank, Henry, Errol, Otis, Owen, Edgar, Lucas, etc. We usually troll the older Social Security name logs. All sorts of distinguished doggy names await you.

Alternatively you could go fun - Pickles, Buttons, Peanut, Colonel...

I wouldn't go girly for a male dog. If he's a small dog, I think he needs a good solid name. Not macho but strong, firm. Good luck and happy dog naming.

I, personally don't care for mixed gender names. My husband wanted to name our female dog "Edgar". We ended up going gender neutral. We tried Jessie, but ended up going with Indie. His previous dog was named Bodie. She was also a female. I previously had a dog named Kima (pronounced kee-ma), she was also a female. The male version would be Kimo, which means friend in native american (think Lone Ranger and Tonto a/k/a "Kimo Sabe")

no specific suggestions but a little tip.. the best advice i got when we were picking a name for our dog .. is that u need to yell it.. and see if it seems right cuz youre going to be doing alot of that with a puppy if its not a name u can picture urself screaming at the top of your lungs then its not the right name.. my dad actually stood in the yard n yelled the 2 names we were trying to decide on.. also its reccommended that u dont pick anything too hard to say or longer than 2 sylabols
-of all the names other people suggested i like reese

We named our first dog after a band we love, his name was panic (widespread panic). Our next was named after one of their albums, her name is tewsy (The Earth Will Swallow You whole), next is a song her name is lilly (Little Lilly), our last if we had got to name her would have been C. Brown. But we didn't so she is Lucy. Is there an activity that you guys all love to do together. Pick a theme, works for us. Good luck!

It's not easy picking a name. We just got a puppy last week, a 10 week old Boston terrier. My daughter picked out the name Lucy and thats the one we all agreed on.

I like the name Mitzi and I don’t think it matters if it is a girly name with dogs unless it is a big masculine dog.

I am not a fan of actual names for animals, it gets confusing when talking about them, but that is just me.
My mom's dog is Sammi, but she was already named when we got her.
We just named our kitten Mumble, she had a hard time walking and she would slip and slide, so we named her after the penguin on Happy Feet...
Just a thought... :) Good Luck and let us know what you decide.

We have a shih tzu - we love her so much - we rescued her when she was a year old from an abusive home. Her name was Bella when we got her, but our other dog a cockapoo name is Bella so we had to change the new dogs name, while trying to think of a name we called her "little dog" because she was so small 3-4 lbs because the previous owner starved her. Little dog stuck and now that is her name. It was funny she would not come to any of the other names that we tried.

There are some great dog naming websites that group the names into all kinds of categories for you--by color, nationality, male, female, unique, popular, etc. I found them a couple of years ago when I was naming our Poodle puppy. I personally think Mitzi is too feminine sounding for a male dog, although my male dog is Remy. It's a French man's name and there are several famous men named Remy (and the male rat from Ratatouille), but for some reason people seem to think it sounds feminine. My all time favorite pet name is Loki, the Norse god of mischief. I had a JRT named Loki that lived to be 17 1/2. However, with the new Avengers movie out the name Loki might either become popular or get a bad rep. BTW, it's not a silly post and I asked a similar question in September or October of 2010 if you want to search the archives. I got a lot of interesting responses.
