Hi all! I was thinking about talking my 10 year old daughter to see the musical "Wicked", but wanted to make sure that it is appropriate for her. Is there anyone out there who has seen it who could enlighten me a bit? Thanks!!
It's a bit grown up in theme and has dark moments but I think that most of it if I remember correctly is enough innuendo that she could enjoy it and miss some subtext!
It is a great musical. It is one of my daughter's favorites, although she is much older. We saw it not too long ago and enjoyed it very much. Yes it is appropriate. Have fun.

I don't recall anything that would be inappropriate for a 10 year old, but I've never worried much about that type of thing.
I think the educational experience of seeing Wicked far outweighs anything that some might deem "inappropriate."

I saw it over the weekend in NYC. It was terrific. We will be taking our 11 year old daughter as soon as I can secure tickets in SF. Go and have FUN. I hear that the theater in SF has best viewing in the middle so be sure to get center seats. Off the to side, I was advised, missed some of the show; so pay the price you will not be disappointed.
I love Wicked and the music is amazing. I think hearing the music before hand is great(since there is a lot of it in the show). My kids 11 and 7 have both seen it numerous times. I think they both saw it when they were 6 for the first time (We are a big musical family and we also love Wizard of Oz). They loved finding the "clues" to Wizard also during the show. Even when my daughter was 6 and couldn't sit still for long, she did great, so I think your 10 year old would do well. What a great treat to do together!

YES!!! Most definitely take your daughter to Wicked. Leave your younger ones at home and enjoy this most precious time with your 10 year old. My 11 year old has seen it twice. I think she saw it at age 9 for the first time. I am extremely careful about the content my kids view and I don't even let them watch TV.
But Wicked is a most magical experience you will not want to miss with your daughter! Enjoy. It will be a memory of hers and yours for a lifetime. The content is wonderful. It is rich and deep and wonderful.

Well, Wicked is not the Wizard of Oz. The story may not be at all familiar to your daughter. It is a girls story and if your daughter likes musicals she will like it. It's a great experience for a girl that age. We know a 8 year old girl who loved it.

I saw it not too long ago in San Diego with the older of my 2 younger sisters & enjoyed it very much. We were actually going to take our almost-9-year-old sister as her birthday present (it didn't work out). It is a great show: very lively & colorful, wonderful music, an interesting look into the background of a beloved tale, and just overall fun fun! Enjoy the show - it is SOOOO worth it! :-)
My daughter first saw Wicked when she was 10 (she's now 11 and has seen it 3 times!). Her 9 year old cousin also was with us and had no issues with the content.
It's a fantastic performance.
There will be some scary parts, a little bit of romance, some adult humor, but if you're OK with your daughter seeing PG stuff...it will be absolutely fine.
I took my daughter to Wicked when she was about 10. We love that show! Go and enjoy it!
I've seen Wicked twice and loved it. I think it would be fine for a 10 year old. It is a love story...so as long as you think she is mature enought to handle that...I think it would be fine. I have a neice who has seen it twice and I think she was 10 or 11 when she first saw it. I do think it would be great for her to know the story ahead of time in order to understand it (you can find stuff on-line about it..also help her understand the connection between Wicked and The Wizard of OZ). I also found listening to the music before I went a big help in following the story. You don't always catch all the words when they are singing.

Hi Jan: I haven't seen it yet, but everyone of my friends that have says it is great. None have said anything about young children though. You might call the theater and ask if there is an afternoon performance. I know that we go to the dress rehersal of the Nutcracker, in San Francisco, which is in the afternoon and the kids all love it. So you might think about that. We have actually been able to get in free several times over the years to rehersals.
When we saw the King and I there were children age 8 there sitting next to us that did very well.
I was named after the good witch, so am looking forward to it.

Wicked is wonderful, and totally appropriate for most kids! My husband and I took our 12, 10, and 8 year olds in August. They all loved it. It may have been a little long for the 8 year old, but other than that, it was a hit. We listened to the CD in the car all the time before we went, so it was a little familiar to them. I say go for it!!!
My husband and I just saw it on Saturday and we both loved it. So clever and entertaining. We were talking about how we wished our 3 year old was 5 so we could take her, as that is the minimum age. Go for it. I got an email about receiving up to $30 off tickets. I think this is the link

It is a great play. my 9 year old loved it. It is actually a great story behind the 2 witches and how they became friends. The music is outstanding and funny. She may not understand the complete depth of the story. However it is the experience of a live performance . that alone is something your daughter may never forget.
we also took my son to Lion King. If it comes back in town. Make sure to book a family day to go see it.
I took my 11 year old and my 8 year old last spring. They LOVED it. It was fabulous. Their friend who was 9 went and she chose to see it again for her 10th birthday instead of a party. You will enjoy it as much or more than your daughter. Make sure you read the synopsis several times before. Have fun!
I took my 7 year old (after asking a similar question to my Moms' Club). She did not get all the nuances of the message. But having seen the Wizard of Oz many times, it was fun for her to see a different back story on the characters.
Definitely a fun treat for her!
I took my 12 year old daughter and my 11 year old son. THey both loved it. If she is familiar with the Wizard of Oz Storyline it helps, but not a must. I saw kids younger than mine at the show. Everyone enjoyed it. No scary or eerie parts. Timewise, including intermission, it was just right. Hope you enjoy the show!

Wicked is GREAT and appropriate for a ten year old, but it is NOT a kids show.
It's about inter-personal relationships and has some social/political comentary/humor.
That being said, if I had a ten year old, I'd take her, but not because it's related to the Wizard of Oz (if that makes any sense).

I don't see any reason why not. I've seen it 6 times now, and my 7 year old is DYING for the day she turns 8 so she can go see it. There is a pretty hot scene in act two, but nothing more than network TV :)
