My obgyn has cancer so I need to find a new one. I have read with interest several recommendations but it is rare to hear why you love your doctor. What I want is someone very competent who I can relate to. I want a sensible women who is familiar with the latest technology. Compassion is important to me but not sentimentality, which is annoying in excess. A doctor or nurse practioner who tells me everything and doesn't talk down to me would be what I love. If you think you know which obgyn I would like please tell me. Ann

Dr. Sharla Brown-Shipman at the Women's Clinic of Johnson County is exactly the doctor you describe! She's always willing to take the time to listen and answer questions, and is clear about explaining without talking down to patients. Her group are all women, so even if you get one on call, it will be a female doc. I would, however, avoid Dr. Maturo in that group who is the opposite of what you're seeking. The offices are at Shawnee Mission and Menorah.

Midwest Women's Health Care is great. I have gone to Dr. Rebecca Johnson for over 25+ years. She is very caring and honest. They also have a wide range of services available for OB-GYN needs. I see her at the Research Hospital office, just east of Brookside.

Well, my doc is a man, Mark Finkelston, so you may choose to stop reading right now...but I love him! He has aweseom bed-side manner in which he is practical, honest, and straight forward. He shows his compassion when he needs to and is otherwise extremely professional. He seems to be knowledgable on both old and new techniques, theories, etc. and has always been able to competently allay my fears and/or answer my questions. He is an office of one which is awesome when it comes to both getting in for an appointment (you can literally get in the next day if you have to/want to) and having a personal relationship. Both he and his staff know me by name, talk to me, joke around, and interact with me each time I go there. He is on call all the time, which kinda sucks for him but rocks for you, so if you ever have an emergency or are pregnant you will always know he'll be there for you if you need him. I've been going to him for probably 8-9 years and I won't change unless he retires!

I see Dr. Christine Boylan. She's located in the Menorah Medical Center offices. She's not an OBGYN, but a family doctor (which I think is better), so she sees all of us for everything. I've been going to her for 10 years now, she's delivered both of our girls, and I absolutely love her. She's patient, calm, has a great bedside manner, very informed, a great listener and takes time to explain things. She's a mom of 3 boys, so she knows what it's like to be a mom, be pregnant, and give birth. She knows me, my husband, and 2 daughters by name and on sight. The nurses are the same way, they know all of us. I can't say enough about her, she's wonderful!

Mine's in Lee's Summit, so you probably wont want to go all that way. I go to Associated Women's Care, which is nice. I saw Dr. Doan while I was pregnant and occasionally Dr. Cobbinah if Doan was too busy. Both were very nice. Now I see Dr. Leverett, because she's the one who's on on Friday's, which is my day off. I love her. She listens when I have a weird problem and is very reassuring. The only thing I dont like, which is the same at any OBGYN I've ever been to, is the wait. Sometimes it's quick, but sometimes it takes forever.

Dr. Doan listened to my concerns, which was nice, and let me have my epidural when I was scared of the pain. (I have a very low threshhold for pain and a lot of back problems, so I was pretty worried).

I have had good experiences with all of the doctors at this practice, but, like I said, you probably dont want to travel all that way.

Hi L.,
I went to the Center for Women's Health for both of my pregnancies, and was extremely happy with the experience. It is run by a father and daughter, Dr. Herbert Hodes and Dr. Tracy Nauser, and they are just my style. They are very down to earth, matter of fact, but not in a way that isn't compassionate. I didn't want anyone that was too soft or over-comforting because I wanted to be sure they were telling me everything, and they always did. My sister in law was also referred to Dr. Nauser after a late term miscarriage and she really appreciated how Dr. Nauser handled everything and was really caring with her. I would recommend pretty much everyone to them, except folks who want a super-soft doc, which they are not.
Good luck! D.
