Okay I guess I am a private person and I don't understand why these high end homes like the clear glass on the shower so you can see yourself and others can see you ! What is your preference ?

What can I do next?

Personally, we don't share a bathroom in my home -- if I'm showering, I get the whole bathroom. I will never understand couples that have one using the toilet while the other is bathing. Ew! So although I don't have clear glass anywhere, it wouldn't bother me one bit. In fact, I think it would be pretty nice.

The clear door lets in more light and who wants to shower in the dark? Like others have mentioned, if I really wanted my privacy I'll lock the bathroom door.

hehe! I have the glass shower. It was originally that way when I bought the house with the metal frames around the edges. I don't remember why I redid it, but I had to.

I had the old shower torn out and replaced the walls with tile and there are two glass walls, one is the door. At the same time, I had the shower head repositioned about a foot higher for hubby. Now there is a frameless glass shower. I love it, but not so everyone can see, but like the appearance of the shower. I love it even better when it is clean!

LOL we don't have a door at all in our master bath, it's a large walk in shower, big enough that the door was optional.
I don't know, I think catching the occasional naked glimpse of each other all wet and soapy keeps things interesting, don't you? ;-)

Who is in your bathroom when you shower? The only person who may come in while I am showering is my husband, he has a good idea what I look like naked.

My master has clear glass, the kids bath is clear but a pattern on the glass makes it less than clear.

You can see yourself? Any reason why you don't know what you look like naked?

My only gripe with our master is the massive window above the bathtub. Love the light but it took me a while to find a shade that worked.

We are planning on renovating our master bath and go European, so no door at all.

I really don't understand what it matters about whether the door is clear glass.

We're replacing our frosted glass with clear glass. We don't share our bathroom with our kids, so it'll just be hubby and I seeing each other, and there's nothing new about that.

ETA: Another thing, I always hang my towel over the shower door anyways, so I get plenty of privacy that way. And I am SO with Beth that I like to be able to see out!

When I'm in the shower I'm usually in the bathroom alone.
No one can see me anyway and my husband and I see each other all the time.
It doesn't bother us.
Our whole shower stall is clear glass - it came with the house that way.
It's a clean look and you can certainly tell no one is hiding in there and it lets light in from more angles than from just the overhead in-ceiling light.
I like it way better than a shower curtain which is what our first house had.

High end homes, for sale, are all visual.
It is made to look like a magazine.
Clear glass makes a space look open and modern and spacious and luxurious.
And when/if a person buys the home, well they can simply change the shower door if they want. When daily life and the soap scum on it and the cleaning of it, changes the reality of its use.

So what if the door is clear or not, per who ever will "see" you.
I mean, its family members in a home.
Not strangers.
But clear shower doors, or even opaque ones, are a pain to clean, right?
We have both kinds on our home. They both get soap scum on it eventually.
We have both clear glass in one bathroom and on the other shower opaque glass.
It doesn't make any difference.

I actually like our clear glass shower. It's clear on 2 sides, and let's a ton of light in from the windows right next to it, so I never need to turn on the light, plus I have a great view of lots of trees while I shower. Maybe we are weird, but it doesn't bother me that it's open and people can see my silhouette. When I'm showering it fogs up. We did learn quickly that you have to squeegee it after each use or it gets water stains. But if you do that each time, you hardly have to clean it, unlike my shower curtain in the other bathroom. Ugh, not easy to clean. I either try to fake clean it as best I can by spraying it and scrubbing or I have to take the whole thing down and wash it. Bleck.

We have clear glass on our new shower door and I like it!

For cleaning, I just keep one of those sponge dish scrubbies with the handle that holds soap in the shower. I have it filled with 50% dish soap and 50% vinegar. Once a week after a shower I take a minute to wash the glass with the scrubby. It takes probably 30 seconds to do, actually. Wash the glass, rinse it off, step out of the shower. I never have to clean gunk off my shower doors! They are always clean. Once a month I wipe down the tiles the same way with the dish scrubby. Having it in the shower with soap in it makes it easy to do.

If I'm taking a shower, the only person in there is me. My hubby may walk in, but no big deal. The toilet is in a separate area with a door so we can both do things in the bathroom at the same time.

I don't have privacy issues about it. It is just my personal preference. I like the clean look of it. Ours are clear with NO frost or design. I LOVE them.

As for cleaning, we've never had an issue. We keep a squeegee in the shower and we squeegee EVERY time we use it as well as wipe it down. About once a week or so, I use a vinegar based cleaner on it to keep any soap scum down. The cleaning upkeep is easy peasy and takes very little time if you just clean as you go.

The walls in my shower are the same tiles that are on the floor, not shiny. I spray them regularly to keep any mildew away. We built this house 13 yrs ago and never had any issues with the shower or clear door. The same goes for the shower in the first house we built in 1992... clear door, no issues and that one backed up to the golf course .

I have clear shower curtains in the other 3 bathrooms we have.

FWIW we are on a large wooded lot and back up to woods and lots of wildlife. The entire back of my house does not have window coverings because we love our view. No one can get back there unless they go through our gates and there is a camera that would catch that activity. None of our neighbors have window coverings in the back either. We are all far enough away from each other that it doesn't matter.

A few things. An opaque door doe not let in enough light, especially in a windowless bathroom and at night.

It makes the space seem larger, when you can see all around a bathroom.

The other thing is many people are claustrophobic.

But I lock the bathroom door, so I would not have a problem worrying about anyone seeing me.

We use a clear shower curtain to make our bathroom look larger and for the light..

it's not like it stays clear, steam fogs it up so you can't actually see through it when someone is in the shower.

But it's easier for me if a kid comes to me and says can I have "this" I can wipe off the door in one area and see what they are talking about. and I like being able to see the person I'm talking too. I tend to have a lot of conversations when I'm in the shower lol.

I used to think my preference was curtains, and then we moved into a house that has glass shower doors. They're far easier to clean and don't have to be thrown away unless they shatter (which has never happened in 9 years).

The doors aren't perfectly clear and you can't really "see" anything definitive. It's not about putting on a show. There's still plenty of privacy. The glass is distorted and frosted in appearance. The doors also have handles on them, which I need. More light is allowed into the shower and tub, which I also need.

And not for nothing, but when I shower I tend to keep the bathroom door closed now that the girls are older. The bathroom door even has a lock on it. There's my privacy guarantee if I really want it.

And for the record, I don't have a "high end" home. It was built in the early 1920's, is a Colonial, in a historic town.

if its between a curtain and framed glass, I'll take a curtain any day for clean ability. But I assume you are talking about frameless glass. Frameless glass is sexy so I'll take it any day over the framed stuff that gathers gunk, even though my family can see me naked (which is also sexy, oh wait, i'm 38 weeks pregnant, so not sexy)
I like framless glass for large showers and if I want my privacy, I'll lock the bathroom door or master door. My husband hangs his towel on the door which offers a little privacy.
However, I'd probably like it a lot less if I didn't have a cleaning service.

I prefer the clear shower curtain - I do NOT have a HUGE bathroom - and a clear shower curtain makes my bathroom appear bigger.

In the newer high-end homes - the clear shower doors are typically more expensive than others...and they let in more light - especially if there is not a light directly above the shower....it also shows you they are "clean"...my parents have a squeegie (spelling) in their shower (both in their home and in their motor home) that they use to keep build up down and it looks nice and fresh...clean...

Hope that helps!

I've had both the type with a curtain and a glass door. The ones with the doors are usually bigger showers. The ones with curtains are easier to clean though. I like the look of the glass door, but it's a pain to clean those things!

But there isn't usually anyone in the bathroom when I'm in the shower anyway, so the privacy issue wouldn't bother me. It's more of a cleaning issue for me

I like it because it makes the space look larger, from both sides of the glass. I guess I'm even more private than you are-- I would never allow anybody in the bathroom when I'm showering. So who is going to see me?

On the other hand, clear glass really shows water spotting so it takes more effort to keep it looking nice.

I have had shower curtains and glass doors, but never a door that was perfectly clear in my home. I have stayed at resorts where they had clear glass doors in showers big enough for two.

I like glass showers big enough for two to shower at the same time. Our current home has a rough surface clear shower that makes it semi-clear. I occasionally use the bathroom while my wife showers and I must admit, I enjoy the view. We will have been married 40 years on Sunday and she has long since forgotten about being embarrassed because I saw her naked, in or out of the shower. But I must admit she looks incredibly sexy as she soaps up or washes her long hair in a clear glass shower.

I occasionally tell her that it must be rough to be a 55 year old woman trapped in a 30 year old body. She usually sends me a kiss and gives me a smile. And I love it when I can make her smile. (No, I didn't marry a 15 yo girl. She was 18)

Good luck to you and yours.

I think the clear door allows you to know it is clean. The frosted (or cloudy) can hide the film (build-up of gunk).

Some people want the clean look.

We have low-end bathroom (one thing at a time to update in an old house built in the 1960's). The shower/bath are one not separated like high end homes. In our old house that was much newer, we had the clear glass for the shower.

I guess if you're sharing one bathroom with someone other than your spouse, then privacy might indeed be an issue. Not in our house. I prefer a clear/translucent shower curtain because (1) it lets me stay aware of my environment (outside the shower) and (2) I can take it down and run it through the washer to clean it.

I have no idea why people like the clear glass on their showers. They never look clean. I prefer textured glass. Using liquid soap and wiping the glass with a squeegee after every shower help keep ours clean.

I hate them too. My husband wants one for our shower (he built the house but never got around to putting one in so I've had a curtain up for 4 years...) and I DO NOT want one. I don't like it either. It's SO hard to get it clean! Instead, I would so much rather have a walk-in shower that's TILED, with a seat, that's deep enough to walk into and NOT have a shower door. It could be to the side away from the bathroom door where you would have to walk over to see in it, and that would give some privacy.

If I were going to have my bathroom redone (which is large enough to accommodate it, but would cost me a chunk of money), that is what I would do...
