I read some information stating that children under 2 should have 16-24 ounces of milk a day. My son will be 1 next month. When we were weaning him off of breast milk to whole milk we started with 2oz mommy milk to whole milk, then 3oz and 5 oz, and so on. He has now been on whole milk for about a month and does great. He is almost completely on a sippy cup too!

Hope this helps some

My pediatrician recommended 16-24 ounces/day for my one year old. He said that drinking more than 24 onces/day may cause constipation.

I know this is way after the fact, but I wanted to add... I asked my ped about Whole Milk. My princess wants to drink nothing but milk. No juice, No water... she will drink homemade fruit Smoothies....
She said no more than 24 oz of milk a day until the age of 3. She said too much milk will cause poor iron and vitamin absorption. She also stated that too much milk can cause Calcium build ups in the Gallbladder.
Just wanted to share.....

Hi, K..

I'm going against the tide here. My pediatrician recommends no more than 8 oz a day of milk and only one other dairy product a day. The reason is that kids love dairy usually and would be content to eat/drink only that all day, but they need to eat a variety of foods. Ever since my son turned 1 year old, I've been giving him 8 oz of whole milk a day. I just fill his sippy cup in the morning for breakfast. If he doesn't finish it, I put it in the fridge and he can have more later. Once it's finished, I rinse it out well (including taking out and rinsing the rubber stopper) and then give him water. I don't give him any juice because it's mostly sugar. Good luck!

Hi K.,
I agree with the post below. Our ped. said about 24 oz whole milk until the age of two and then it will decrease down to 12 oz. Also someone suggested switching him to sippy cup...yes very good advice.
And another thing, our girls ped. before we moved to MD was this really rrally nice 'old school' ped. When I asked him about whole milk and the amounts he did say that if i give milk mto kids always give whole milk, no matter what the age. So mine are 28 months old and still drink whole milk but just in the evening before bedtime.

Hi K.. My name is B.. I also am 28 years old but have 3 kids. When my kids started on milk my doctor said to use 2% and put them on liquid vitamins. My kids normally had milk with breakfast, lunch and dinner. Sometimes 1 or 2 cups in between meals if they didn't want juice or water. It all depends on the doctor and how your child is growing to know how much and what kind of milk.

Both of my kids started on whole milk on their first birthdays. I used to just fill their sippy cups a little more than half full with whole milk. They got their bottles taken away on their first birthdays.

Hi K.

The typical recommendation is to do whole milk until age 2 because their brains are developing very quickly at that point and they need plenty of fat for brain growth. The typical recommendation for quantity is 24 ounces. If you haven't already done so, it's a good idea to offer him milk in a sippy rather than a bottle. It's a good time to transition away from the bottle which isn't great for their teeth. If you are unsure, you can always give your ped a call and confirm their recommendations. As another person mentioned, some do have different opinions and may recommend more or less based on his growth and development.

I have 2 kids ages 4 and almost 7 now and with both of them I gave them whole milk at age one. The diatary reccomendation is what I went by. Alot of people just give thier kids a sippee cup all day and just keep filling it over and over and now we wonder why our kida are obese. 3 cups of milk a day was all I allowed my kids. You need to space it out, like just having milk at meal times. Give the child water as much as possible so that they don't refuse it later in life. Even sometimes the flavored water is ok even though it has some sugar. And I deffinitely suggest no more than one to two cups of juice a day.
