So which is better? Gel or acrylic nails?
I want to get fake nails, but can't decide which ones? I have heard good and bad about both.
Give me your thoughts........

What can I do next?

I've seen nails after acrylic, bumpy and thin. Gel never worked for me. I always got mine wrapped. Initially they were silk wrapped and in the end fiberglass. They were strong and beautiful. When I had them removed I just had my nails cut down and they grew in as they were before I started to get them "did".

i'm not sure as i never got either but i just heard that those uv dryers that salons use to dry your nails are just like tanning beds and having acrylic nails makes it worse for some reason so before you go, be sure to put some sunscreen on your hands ;)

Although I haven't had gel nails for 10 years now (and enjoy my natural nails), I hear gel nails are better.

Gels are definetely better! I have had gels for about 10 yrs now, and I had acrylics for a few yrs before that. I agree with the other moms, the acrylics were bittle and much harder on your real nails. You do not have to have them redone every month or two, you get them filled just like you would with acrylics. I love my nails! They look very nice. Gels will be more expensive than acrylics.

I get mine done regularly and prefer the gel. I think they last longer, look nicer, and are generally shinier. It is a little more expensive but I think it's worth it.

Plain old acrylics are tough, cheap and easier to fix if damaged, and also quick for a mom without too much time at the salon.

I prefer the gels, they seem to be nicer to the original nails.

well ive been getting my nails done since i was about 14 and that was 9 years ago, i have had both and bottom line is it really depends how long ur going to keep them on.. i actually get overlays..no tips just acrylic or gel on top of my nails, keeping them on long, your nails will get britter however once i take my yearly "break" my nail bed always gets stronger again..if youjust want to get tips acrylic will be just fine! if you care a little more about your nail bed, and want it to last longer, get gel...with both options youll still need a fill in 2/3 wks depending on how fast your nails grow! enjoy!

I've never had acrylic, but I DID get gels and when they came off, my nails have been a mess ever since. They split and tear and break easily now, they are very thin (almost transparent now). I would likely never get gels again.

I had gorgeous nails up until I got married - I put gel ones on for my wedding day 6 years ago and since I removed them about a month after my wedding my nails have sucked. They are so brittle and thin now. Not sure if the gel had anything to do with it, but I haven't been able to have "pretty nails" since then.

I havent had nails since the kids came along. I used to get the "Solar Nails" I think they are brush on gel. They were a class above acrylic. You dont have to paint them beacause they are done in pink and white powder for a permanent french manicure. So - less going back for polish. You can paint them if you want. And they were far sturdier, so, less going back for a repair. They just looked nicer too. But they are, of course, more expensive. I would get a new set and get maybe 2 fills out of it before my nails grew so long that it was time for a new set. So, depending on where you go check the price of a new set and fills to help put together your "nail budget." What the hell.... Factor in a pedicure too! You deserve it.

Well I just got pink and white acrylics about a month ago. I was looking into gel nails too, but when I found out you have to have them soaked off and completely re-done every 2 weeks I decided against them. That was just too time consuming!

When I have them i have the Solar Nails too. It is a certain brand of gel I think. They look really nice, but still mess up your natural nails pretty bad if you don't have them removed the right way. Good luck, and totally go for the pedi too!
