White Spots on 7 Yr Old Teeth

My 7 year old has white spots on her new pErmanent teeth. I asked the dentist about it and they said it was normal and that the spots would blend in with her teeth in time. This sounds "off" to me. Has anyone else had this issue?

What can I do next?

I have those same spots and they did not go away and I have the dentist put a thick coat of composite over to blend the teeth to look the same color. Even if I bleach my spots stay the same. J.

The hygenist that mentioned high fevers is the best answer I saw here.

I had those spots on my permanent teeth due to a bad illness as a child. (It didn't help that I didn't recieve proper care either).

Not all of them have faded, but for the most part, they are gone. But I am slightly anal when it comes to my teeth. My teeth are also very weak due to my bad care as an infant.

I also know that flouride toothpaste has nothing to do with it. I barely had my teeth brushed as a young child.

As she grows older, I doubt any one will really notice. Especially with all the yellow stained teeth out there from coffee & cigs. Just make sure she takes good care of them now, so she will grow up taking care of them.

I think it's fluoride related. If your water is fluoridated you should not supplement with fluoride. Usually the dentist or pediatrician know what areas are fluoridated but check with your local water company. Also, you may be able to avoid the staining with your second child. My dentist only uses fluoride supplements from 4-6. My pediatrician started her at three when we moved. It's something to check into. I think the staining can be removed or may go away with time.

Yup- it's normal, and it goes away. I had spots on my teeth when I was a kid, too. As it was explained to my mom, it has to do with the minerals in the water you drink and the unique composition of your child's teeth. Nothing to worry about!

I am 26 and still have the white spots on my teeth. I was told that they are there from having a high fever as a child. They don't cause me any problems and don' bother me,but they are there. As far as I know, not a big deal.

I recently read this article that said white spots on there teeth could happen if the child swallows toothpaste. Not sure if that is the reason but thought it wouldn't hurt to let you know.

I have a 20 month old son. So I haven't gotten to that stage yet.

I may remember this incorrectly, but my best friend had them as a kid. I remember her telling me that it was Fluoride Stains. Her mom said that the dentist told them “it was from being started on fluoride toothpaste to early.” Hers did blend in for the most part over time. Around 15, right before they put her braces on, they bleached her teeth to get the rest of the stains out.

I don’t remember really noticing it other than the one time, at that was only because she was showing me. Of course, I’m also the kind of person that doesn’t notice mild acne on people, so maybe it looked worse than I remember.

It should get better with time. If not or it really starts to affect her self-esteem, you can look into bleaching them. (Although 7 is a bit TOO young I’d think.)

Hope this helped! –Janell-

Hi,
I am 32 years old and still have the white spots on my teeth. I was told just 5 months ago from my dentist that it was from having too much flouride as a child. The spots do not ALWAYS show on my teeth. When I wake up in the mornings I can tell if I splept with my mouth closed because my teeth look great. On the nights I sleep with my mouth open I have spots on my teeth. My daughter who just turned two also has the spots on her teeth. I am starting to wonder if it is just a hereditary thing. Good luck!

Yes, white spots on both older girls teeth. The older one had a big white star on one front tooth. The Dentist said either from trauma or overdose from fluride tabs. As a teen, she tried to bleach it, but too busy as a grown up to notice it. The 9 year-old has flecks that do not show on photos, and good strong and straight otherwise. I don't point it out as a problem, if she chooses when a teen, we will "whiten" all her teeth...

A great majority of children have those white spots on their adult teeth, and they will go away. If you notice, when permanent adult teeth are coming in, they are also slightly scalloped at their leading edge in order to make it through the gums, and that goes away without anyone noticing they were even there. Same deal with the white spots.
Don't call attention to them, and neither your daughter nor anyone else will ever notice.

I did and still do have white spots on my teeth. It's actualy a good thing, it's a build up of extra calcium.

I had these spots on my teeth until I was about 12 or 13. My dentist said the same thing and they did blend over time. His advice is probably accurate.

I work in the dental field and have for 11 years now. The white spots are decalcifications in the enamel. Its usually caused by high fevers at a young age, when the permanent teeth are forming in the bone (toddler stage usually). The spots are not harmful in any way, just not esthetically pleasing. Sometimes they do fade or blend in over time, but they don't always go away. If its something that really bothers you, when she's older (teen ager) you can do some cosmetic bonding (like a filling) to mask the spots. Hope that helps.... good luck!

Im a dental assistant. White spots could be supercalcification due to flouride. When your child has all the permanent teeth in you can bleach them if they dont fade over time with like, say, crest strips. Wait until all the perms are in tho. This is very common and not anything to worry about.
