My 4 1/2 yr old son whom is just getting tall enough for the booster. Yes, he is short... I just dont know which booster seat to choose. Both me and my husband have high back seats so I dont know if we really need the high back booster or just the small one. He does occasionaly fall asleep in the car or on long trips, so again I am not sure if we should go the high back booster. HELP!

What can I do next?

I have my 4 year-old in the Graco Nautilus. It is carseat with a restraint system that is good up to like 60 pounds and you can then use it as a high-back booster and finally the back comes off to become a backless booster. He will fit in the restraint system for a longtime to come.

I have 4 sunshine kids monterey booster seats. 2 for each vehicle. I love them from a lot of other peoples boosters ive seen in their cars or seen how the seat belt fits their kids I feel that my booster seats are far more secure than a lot of other brands. They are pricy but they will last until they are ready to be done. It is a high back but also turns into a low back when they are ready (when the shoulder belt fits correctly) which my 6 year old still has the high back because I dont like how the shoulder belt fits him without it. Plus he can fall asleep in the car and stay in a safe position. They dont complain on long trips and they are able to buckle themselves in. I love these seats!

My very tall and big 6 year old is in the britax frontier and can in the five point harness to 85 lbs then it will be a high back booster to 120lbs! Basically lasts past the point the even need a booster but the longer they're in one the safer, especially the longer they're in a five point harness. My daughter falls asleep on long trips too and the short boosters make them slump over. Plus even my six year old doesn't always stop fidgeting enough to sit properly with the adult seat belt, so it's not safe. Small children can be decapitated if not properly restrained :( we got ours at albeebaby.com and I've seen them new in box on eBay.

The best booster is going to be the one that fits your son the best, you shoul try to find a store that will let you try them out in the car. You want the lap belt to be low across his lap and not ride up on his tummy (as that is a higher risk for internal injuries. At his age definitely get the high back. Is there a reason you want to move him to a booster? Has he outgrown his harnessed seat. A child in a booster is responsible for their own safety, does your son have the maturity to stay in position, and to not put the shoulder belt behind him our under his arm? If the answer is no you may want to consider keeping him in a five point harness longer (closer to age 5 or 6.)

I agree with the Mamas who say to keep him in a 5-point seat as long as possible; they're so much safer! (my 4 year old has a Graco Nautilus that will keep him in a 5-point until he's 65 pounds! I know there are ones that have even higher weight restrictions, too) If you are determined to move him to a booster, though, stick with a high back one. It will keep the seat belt postioned better and safer for him.

I read that if you car doesn't have a head rest to protect your child's head then you need a high back booster to cushion their head. Attached is a link for recommendations for children in booster seats.

Both my boys are in Sunshine Radian high backs. My oldest is 10 years old and is still comfortable in it and falls asleep all the time when we have late nights. We looked at a ton of other boosters and honestly I felt like I was giving him little more than a phone book to make him fit in a grown up chair. We bought a couple of the boosters that had a back and the first trip to Disneyland we took he tried to fall asleep and kept waking up in pain as his head would crane in unnatural ways. We had to pull over several times to help him out, finally finding a way to prop him with a couple towels to finally get home. We felt terrible! We only use those little booster on the very rare occasions they ride in my husband's car for quick errands. I still hate them!

We still harness our nearly 5 year old. It is the safest place for him. We bought the Britax Frontier 85 and love it.

We like the Graco high backed. We actually just bought the seat base for our second son and used the back off the first one. It works well during trips and such. If you get one with a removable back, you can use it either way.

I recommend the high back because it sets the belt that goes across his chest right where it needs to be. Plus provides more protection for his head in a crash. I really like the Graco Turbobooster- had one for each of my children- just got one for my 3 yo. When they no longer need the back it comes off easily. Also, it can recline with the seat- nice if he naps on a long ride.
