Which Baby Food Is Okay at This Age?

My daughter will be 9 months old in a couple of weeks. When she was 6 months old the doctor said to try and give her some oatmeal. When I attempted she choked and it freaked me out so I never tried it again. She does great with regular baby food, mashed with no chunks in it. Maybe she was too young at 6 months. Other people are telling me to try it again but I just keep remembering her choking last time and how terrifying it was. Should I try it again or just say forget it, and better safe than sorry? It was gerber oatmeal mixed with formula if that makes a difference. I think she just doesn't know what to do with the tiny chunks in the oatmeal. She has 4 teeth. Two top and two bottom.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I followed the box directions and it said only two teaspoons of formula. I don't think it was enough. I think ill try it again and make it runnier.
Thanks guys. I appreciate your answers. She's only ever tried oatmeal but I do have a box of rice cereal to I've been waiting to give to her. I didn't realize they could have finger foods at this age. I hope she doesn't choke again or I think we"ll be eating baby food for awhile.

How think was it when you mixed it? It shouldn't be think like adult oatmeal...there should not be any chunks. I would try it again but start with Rice cereal...she is definately not too young (barring any developmental concerns that we are not privy to).

Most babies start with some in their bottles but my son never liked it in the bottle so we always spoon fed his (and he liked it thicker too). My daughter liked it a bit thinner.

Baby food is only for teaching a baby to chew and swallow. I think that she's old enough to do a bit more chunky but NOT a lot more chunky. TIny tiny bits. This will advance her to the next stage. Byt 12 months she can be on table food all the time. She really doesn't even need baby food.

If you get a food chopper that does a great job you can get your table food to a good consistency for her to swallow and not choke. Then as she gets older you can just chop it less.

For my grand kids I still use 2 knifes to cut up their spaghetti. It's just way less messy if it's in small pieces.

Go for it. At that age, my daughter was eating regular oatmeal with yogurt mixed into it.

i say go ahead and try it, make it a little runnier and mix with with some baby food, it doesn't hurt to try a little bit she will not get used to getting foods if she isn't not introduced to thicker chunkier foods

Have you given her any finger foods yet? She doesn't need to have lots of teeth. She can gum most foods just fine. My son is 10 months old and eats everything we do (as long as it isn't junk food). I cut in into small pieces if it is really chewy such as steak (he only has 4 teeth like your daughter) otherwise he does fine with bigger chunks.

At that age my kids were eating off my plate. I think you are on the right track with thinning the oatmeal, and you could try some of those Gerber puffs that kind of melt in their mouths to let her practice with texture.

At 9 months both mine were eating lots of things. We'd progressed from pureed/smooth to finely chopped soft items.

That said, all kiddos are different and yours seems to have more trouble with the thicker items. Just make the oatmeal a looser consistency (i.e., more fluid) and you should be fine. You could even do regular oatmeal (maybe put it in a food processor first for a finer consistency), which I'm sure would be cheaper than baby-specific food items.

It is not lumpy. Make it with enough formula so that it is smoothe but not runny. How about the other cereals? Does she eat them without a problem?

She can have finger foods, start with the gerber 'poofs' that dissolve in her mouth almost instantly. Gagging a little is normal part of baby learning how to eat, it will happen sometimes. Sometimes they do it because they dont like the taste of something, and it has nothing to do with choking. With my 13 month old, we did more of a baby led weaning approach to feeding, which means I nurse him on demand, and then he gets small bites of anything we are having as long as its soft enough and not too spicy. You can start this at your dds age. I found it to be much easier than the traditional pureed food approach, and cheaper too. He feeds himself for all his meals now, unless its yogurt or something so sloppy that he will make a mess with. GL
