Where to Sleep

Hi Moms. I am looking for some suggestions on where to have my son sleep at night when we are traveling. We used to just take along his pack'n'play but he has out grown that. At home he still sleeps in his crib(probably a couple months away from a toddler bed), but my husband and I are not comfortable with using a hotel crib, having your basic concerns with age, safety, and cleanliness. Of course we have thought of just having him in the bed with us, but don't want him to get used to that. What have you all done during this stage? Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

What can I do next?

If you are traveling by car, I suggest either a sleeping bag w/a blow-up mattress built in or a little "sofa" that folds out to a small bed. My son LOVED traveling with his. He thought it was cool!

I agree with the fold out kids couches, we got my son a "cars" couch that folds out and has a zip on blanket attached, he takes it everytime he spends the night somewhere...grandma's etc.

Well we had twins so there was never an option but just to put them in a room with us with double beds and I would always bring along the safety enclosure. I can't remember the exact name of it but its a type of item that secures underneath any kind of mattress to ensure the child doesn't fall out of their bed. If he is almost ready to convert to a toddler bed you are going to have to invest in one anyways so I would suggest going ahead and getting one. I would scoot the bed if possible all the way up next to one wall and then put the enclosure on the other side.

I love our Toddler Aerobed. It's a little more expensive than some other options but it's great quality and it's big enough that my 2 year old will be able to use it for several more years. Even though it has slightly raised sides my daughter still occasionally rolls off of it. But now she just climbs right back on and goes back to sleep :)

Just so you know, some hotels have guard rails to put on one or both sides of the mattress. Call ahead to find out if your hotel has some. We stayed at an Embassy Suites in Orlando and they had some. Good luck!

The Aero Bed for Kids (found at Target or target.com) is WONDERFUL! We have used this for my daughter (now 4) for 2 years now. We will be purchasing a second one for my now 19 month old son. This is a soft, comfortable solution when traveling. Check it out!

Good luck!!

We just let the kids sleep with us in the same bed when traveling. If your son is old enough, just explain he's only allowed to sleep in bed with you on special occasions such as traveling.

A hotel crib is usually similar to the pack'n'play you said he has our grown. When we stayed in a hotel about 2 years ago... they had one still in it's zipper bag when we got there, but we used our own.

When we stayed in the hotel - it was for about a week while our house was going through a lead "removal" process. We had 5 of us in a one room hotel room w/ a small kitchen... don't get me wrong it was a nice hotel room, but it was hard to get the kids to sleep. We put the then 3 & 4 yr olds in one bed, the 16 mo old in the "play-pin" and hubby & I in the other bed. We lined the floor w/ extra pillow around the kids bed - just incase they fell out (which we had to ask for more, but when we told them why they snickered & brought them to us.) If you still don't feel comferable w/ that... bring some of his bedding stuff and lay him on the floor or a blow-up matters on the floor.

Good luck w/ the hotel stay.

Maybe you can take along a twin size air mattress? We did this with our son on a beach trip once and it worked out fine.

Our kids usually sleep in bed with us. We get a room with 2 queens, prop pillows on the side they're sleeping on, and each one of us takes a kid and sleeps with them in that bed just to be safe. Our kids are 2 and 3.5.

Depending on the hotel, there's really nothing wrong with the cribs (Worked for Marriott for 4 years in college). They HAVE to have cribs that comply with legal standards. They're sprayed down between guests and sheets are washed daily.

Now that I work for a company developing a treatment for head lice, I know a little too much about critters such as bed bugs, and they're making a big come back. Our CEO warns not to even put your suitcase on the floor because they'll climb on and make their way back home with you.....even at the nicest hotels (probably more common because they have more international travelers who seem to be spreading them).

You can either get a room with double beds or get one of those little kid air mattresses. I got a really cheap one for my son to use from Kmart since it only gets used once or twice a year when we go home to visit family or if someone sleeps over at our house.

Good luck

We used to bring a air mattress and a sleeping bag and let my son sleep on that when we traveled. That way he wasn't on the floor and he wasn't in danger of falling off the bed.

We just took a trip with our 2-1/2 year old twins and they slept in a roll-away bed the hotel provided. They sleep in toddler beds at home (son climbed out of his crib around 18 months old) so it wasn't a big transition but I was comfortable because the roll-away bed was pretty low.

Another option is to use the matress from the hotel's crib and just put it on the floor.

We used all the bedding from another bed or called for more bedding. I folded the comforter in half or thirds, put it on the floor, and used some extra sheets or blankets. He always did great with it. There were a few times that he crawled onto another bed (if there was one in the room), and he never fell off. He did that in the middle of the night, and we didn't even notice until the morning.

Our daughter is almost three and on a recent trip we got a suite, which had a pull out sofa. We asked for extra pillows to put around the back and sides of the pull out once it was open. It was a really cozy space for her to sleep.

Hi J.,

In a double room, the other bed should work fine for him. If he's a mover and shaker at night you might want to take portable side rails with you when you travel. Until we had our second child we always got a king size room and let our daughter sleep with us.

God bless,

M.

We kept using the pack and play until J was about 3 years old. We go to my FIL's a few times a year to house sit while he travels and it worked well for us. We have an extra twin mattress out there now and just put it in the floor by our bed. Both kids sleep on it. One on each end. K is a restless sleepr but J is a sleep in one position all night kind of kid. If we were to travel now and stay in a hotel we would just get a room with 2 queens and sleep accordingly.

We have either let them sleep with us or rearranged the room. LOL In some cases, we were places where we could move the one bed so one side was against a wall and the other side, we would line with the arm chairs, desk chairs, etc. Another option is to buy bed rails!! They make some of them now so that they collapse...they are still kind of bulky but not as long as the beds until you open them up. ;)

Good luck!
