Where to Donate Children's (Infant/toddler) Books and Clothes?

Does anyone know of any non-profits that are in need of children's books and clothes? I'd rather the items go to those who really need them rather than selling in a resale shop. We are located in Evanston, but would be happy to drive wherever to drop off the items. Many thanks for any help!

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for the great suggestions! Ironically, I serve on the board for a domestic violence shelter, but they are in the fortunate position to have a want list that primarily consists of diapers and toiletries. Many thanks again and happy holidays!

New Moms Inc in Chicago is a great place. I have donated stuff here before. http://www.newmomsinc.org There are for low income teen moms who are trying to get their lives together. This organization gives them the skills to do that.

Happy Holidays,

I donate to a branch of the DCFS. Details below. They pick items up (I live in the city) and they always are right on time, call when they are close etc. Great people to work with and they do give a tax receipt. They have told me that the girls they are working with have absolutely nothing and that all items are needed. I have given baby gear, books, supplies etc.

The recipients of your generous donations are re-entering life on their own after either being hospitalized, extensive rehabilitation and/or homelessness.

If you would like to be issued a tax credit notice one can be provided.

I hope you will consider me as your recipient as your items will be greatly appreciated.

Catholic Charities will take any infant/toddler items and they are distributed to their various outreach places, including shelters. They have a main location on LaSalle near Ontario downtown.

You could contact Hephzibah Home in Oak Park to see if they have need of those items. http://hephzibahhome.org/home.html

There is a non-profit called Teen Mother Choices. We have a chapter in Arlington Heights, but I'm not sure where the other local chapters are. Those teen moms could definitely use any items you'd be willing to donate. Here's the website so you can look for other chapters closer to you. http://www.teenmotherchoices.org/

Good luck!

Hi K.,

I'm not sure if you already found a place for the books but, I know the 3rd grade scouts at my kids school are doing a service project and collecting gently used childrens books for an organization that I can't think of the name off the top of my head. Please contact me if you are interested in donating the books.

Thanks,
Monika

I would contact Hepzibah Children's Association in Oak Park, one of my favorite not-for-profits. They run a group home for children who cannot live with their families or parents, but have not been placed in foster care and I am sure they need gently used clothing and toys. They are a truly loving and terrific organization! There website is:

You may have gotten this suggestion already, but Salvation Army is always looking for these types of things. There are many drop offs located throughout Chicagoland.

That's great of you to think of others like that, and even better to set a good example for your little ones :)
We donate our things to New To You, a resale shop in Broadview. It's right on Roosevelt and 17th Avenue, I believe. I'm pretty sure that just about everyone there is working as a volunteer- I've done it, too. The proceeds go to half a dozen different Christian schools to help with their financial aid.
It's a bit of a hike, but definitely goes to a good cause!
Happy holidays!
