Where Do You Get Toddler Blankets?

I am looking for a blanket for my toddler - all I have found is baby blankets, and they are too small for my 2 1/2 year old daughter. She is still in her crib so I don't need toddler bedding sets for a bed (yet! - thinking of transitioning her in January).

Any good ideas out there?
Thanks for any input!
Warmly,
E.

The only place I've been able to find bedding for a toddler bed/crib was on Ebay. I noticed a lot of responses mention stores by name but we haven't been able to find anything to fit a crib mattress in any stores we tried. We are in the process of finding a toddler pillow without any luck.

My daughter stayed in her crib until almost 3 1/2. I actually found a great, washable "down-like" throw at the Christmas Tree Shoppe. It was fantastic. The right size, warm. In fact she still uses it in the car even though she has transitioned out of the crib.

If you get to Wal Mart, go to the bedding section. They have toddler sets but they also have fleece blankets with all kinds of characters on them. They aren't big enough for a twin size bed but they are perfect for a toddler (my son still uses his and he IS in a twin size bed).

Target has a great assortment of blankets that are just the right size--not so small that they are more suited to a baby, and not so big that they are for an adult. Plus many of them are fleece, so they are so soft. We have several (because they are also inexpensive)!

Small "throw" blankets make great blankets for bigger toddlers.

Toddler bedding is typically the same size as crib bedding (toddler beds use the same size mattress). So you could look for toddler bedding with a longer comforter and use that in her crib until you convert to the toddler bed.

Thankfully a crib and a toddler bed mattress are the same size, so whether it is in the crib or on the toddler bed frame, you have the same size area to cover. Finding the perfect bedding can be a bit more tricky though.

I found some great sheet sets online for toddler beds that I use on both my crib and my toddler bed (I have a daughter in each, they share a room and I wanted them to have matching bedding).

Before I redecorated their room and went Ikea crazy I made their blankets or bought some adult throws/toddler throws. I still make blankets to go under their top comforter set, and they enjoy knowing it is their special blanket from mommy. You can also look online for toddler bedding. It should fit your crib also. The main difference is that the crib has taller rails than a toddler bed.

Hope you find what you are looking for :)

i used to just buy a yard of fabric from walmart when my daughter needed a blanket... we actually still have them and she still sleeps with them. she is only 5.. but she loved being able to pick out which fleece type fabric she wanted..you can buy it in any size you need... so if you want one that is just the size for you child then measure your child and add a foot or so to the length..

I bought mine from a boutique and my LO loves it! In fact she's still using it. It's super soft made with bamboo and a lot bigger than swaddle size. 66 inches to be exact. https://www.pickybunny.com/product/rosy-dewdrops-luxury-m...

I agree with the other post. If you know you'll be going to a toddler bed (not a twin bed), just get the bedding now and use the blanket part of it now. You may want to do a search of the posts for transitioning from crib to bed for other ideas about that concept.

Also, I've used the "yard of fleece" idea, especially heading into winter because it's a warmer blanket. My mother-in-law just hemmed the edges, but it really doesn't need anything.

Have you ever heard of tag blankets? you can go to the craft store and look in the fleece section. You need to by two pieces of fleece each a different pattern (usually a pattern and than a matching solid) for a 2 1/2 year old I would suggest a yard and a half, it will "fit" for awhile, then once home on your kitchen table place both pieces of fleece togethor so they line up, cut off the edging, its usually white, then start anywear and make 2 inch cuts into both blankets about 1 inch apart, work your way around the whold piece of fleece, once done it will look fringed, then start knotting the 2 inch cuts, tieing one piece of blanket to the other piece on top, work your way around till the end. I hope this doesn't confuse you, This may sound like a lot of work but it really only takes about 1/2 hour. plus you can match your child's room. My kids love these and even have new ones as they go. Good luck

Hi E. -

We use fleece 'throw' blankets with our 11mo old son. They work great. They are both warm and big enough to tuck in around the edges of the mattress. We also put him in fleece jammies and a sleep sack so he stays really warm (our house is drafty).

I found that most toddler bedding sets don't come with blankets so with my older one we used the fleece throws with her toddler bed as well when we transitioned her. She still uses them in her twin bed.

Hello,
I dont know if anyone has mentioned the NOJO toddler blanket? I bought it at Babies R US and my 2 yr old LOVES it. Its lightweight, soft and it has a silky edge that she rubs on her face for comfort. I highly recommend it!!! I just moved her to a toddler bed with a toddler pillow too that I bought from Leaps and Bounds. Good luck with the transition!! :) Stacey

It's really easy to make a blanket, and you can size it however you wish. Just get some batting, some fabric, and some satin binding. you make a sandwich of the batting and the fabric, right sides out, and then fold the binding over the edges and sew. And of course with the great selection of fabrics out there you can personalize it however you wish. Loads of fun to do, too. I've made all my kids blankets and blankeys, even made a quilt for a friend's new baby girl. :D

E.,

I have also made the no-sew fleece (tag blankets) for all three of my kids. They are very easy and warm. I find a yard and a half is perfect for that age. My sister-in-law has also picked out a nice piece of heavy fleece and just hand stitched a blanket stitch around the edges for a finished look. If you look online for fleece blankets you will find a lot of easy ways to make them. The fabric stores often have good sales on fleece and you can sometimes get it cheaper then at Wal-Mart. Good luck!!

AN adult Throw size blanket is the perfect length for a toddler. My daughter has a fleece one I've had since college that has become her lovey! I also have down ones that are very warm for her. Look at TJ Maxx or Marshalls for nice ones cheap!!

have someone make one.. either knit or crochet! quilted or otherwise.. go to some craft fairs if you don't know anyone who does that. measure the size you want and request a special size.. I found that baby blankets and toddler ones didn't quite work, so I had my mom make a special size..

I am in that very same spot as yourself as my girl just turned two yesterday :). Our nearest Wal Mart sold a fun Spider Man theme that I bought for her brother. At the same time this store was fazing out there fabric department so I bought inexpensive materials to make my girl a customized one for her birthday. Wish me luck :) It might be quite fun to make them seasonal throws personalized and not commercialized.

our daughter is 17 mo. and I have also gotten a couple of nice fleece blankets from target in the baby section...like the other poster said, they're not the "infant" size, but they're not huge either. Just enough to cover her up- she throws them off at night most of the time anyway!

I love the buying the yard of fleece idea though- we don't have a local craft store, so it would be an effort to find one, but if I did that is what I would do!

Hi E.,

I have found a lot of my girls blankets at Target and Wal-Mart. They are not the small little square baby blankets, they are pretty big (decent sized) and nice and soft blankets. Good luck, they are out there. :)

I just had this dilema myself, and what I did was go to the craft store and buy a piece of fleece (measured to the size I wanted). It cost me $6 for the material, was just the right size, needs NO sewing to finish the ends, and I got a really cute pattern! Another idea, or in addtion to the fleece, is to get a "throw" blanket like one you'd buy for a couch. I have one that is like a down blanket, just smaller for someone to snuggle with on the couch. Its still a little too big for the crib, but at their age, you don't have to worry about that anymore. Good luck!
