Hi, we are suppose to go to Cabo San Lucas in June that we planned 2 years ago. We as a family have gone through some difficult times the past 6 months which may not allow us to be able to purchase plane tickets for my family of 6 which BREAKS my heart because my boys are looking so forward to it. We even have the condo paid for we just can not afford the plane tickets, it would cost $3000 for 6 people. So I was wondering if anyone had a great wonderful place to tell about that we could drive to? We still want to be on a beach, that is very important. So if any of you have any great experiences somewhere that we could drive to in about 24-48 hours let me know. Thanks!

What can I do next?

My dad used to take us on summer vacations to Gulf Shores, Alabama. We always stayed at the Gulf Shores Plantation which does have a web site and seems to be reasonably priced. I have great memories of playing on the beach with my siblings there.

You really should check out www.funjet.com or better yet, call a travel agent that specializes in Funjet. They often have plane tickets that are well below the usual fare because they charter the whole flight and the flights are often direct. I flew to Cancun direct last summer for 199.00 a ticket. If you already have the condo paid for, it may be worth a try to see if you can get cheaper tickets. I found that going to Florida or even driving somewhere nearby was going to cost about the same in gas and hotel rooms as going to Cancun for a week. I highly recommend Funjet!

It's a little further than the places the other ladies are talking about, but Newport, Oregon is fantastic. I went there about 2 years ago with my family, and absolutely loved it.

Also, I will be looking for a daycare for my 7 month old starting at the end of May. Would you be able to give me some more information on yours? I would prefer to have him in a home daycare. You can email me at ____@____.com or ____@____.com. Thanks!

I've heard Virginia Beach is beautiful and it's maybe a 22 hour drive. I went to college in Virgnia, no where near the beach, but where I went to college (aboout 30 minutes from Ronoake, I think I spelled that wrong)but I was able to drive it in one day, stopping for rest breaks. Will you be able to get your money back on the condo?

my inlaws rave about Orange Beach, Alabama- they have been there with friends the last two years and have reserved a condo for a full month for next year- white sand beaches and lots of things to do- it's about 15 hrs from KC! Hope that helps! You might also check out priceline.com, I've gotten some great deals that way--

Virginia Beach is beautiful. We went last summer and had a ball. There's a ton to do for everyone plus you're only a couple of hours from Colonial Williamsburg and D.C. which all have wonderful historical aspects (and good shopping!).

You can get fairly inexpensive airline tickets to Orlando this time of year. And of course you could also drive there. Orlando is in Central Florida, so you have the option to choose either coastline about an hour or two either direction. Or you could just stay in Orlando and visit theme parks, Sea World, Universal Studios, Disney, water parks galore...

Hi M.,
I have never been to the "ocean" or "the beach" but, 1 of my favorite places to go is the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, Nebraska. It is an awesome zoo, they have the rainforest there, an aquarium that is realy awesome the cat house, and monkey house all of these things are inside so even if its a little chilly or hot outside you can go indoors and cool off or warm up.
The rainforest you go in at the top and as you go threw it you slowly get to the bottom there are birds out among you sitting on vines and there are rope bridges you can walk on that are behind waterfalls. very awesome for any age.
In here also you can walk on a dock of sorts and there are crocodiles and alligators in the water, you walk a little futher and you see a beaver home (the back on one side and the inside on the other (there is glass there so you can see in).
The aqaurium has lots of fish and a jellyfish tank, they have penquins that are in an enclosed glass area and it snows inside there its so awesome, you can walk down a ramp and see them swimming in the water.
I highly recommend going there, when we were last there it was 2 years ago and they were just finishing the cat house, also one of the female gorilla's had had a baby and it was clibing the ropes. The whole ZOO is AWESOME. You can look it up on the internet and see the web cams they got in the penquin exhibit, they have a couple more cameras in other ones but I can't remember which ones. I know it's not quite what you are looking for but I thought I might mention it.
The other place I want to take my kids is ceder point (it's like worlds of fun) it is in Sandusky, Ohio I know what you are saying about the airfare and the amount it cost's we have 6 in our family quite younger in ages though atleast 3 of them. Hope this helps a little W.

You might try to bid on airfare- you aren't out anything if your offer isn't accepted. Try Hotwire.com or priceline.com.
By the time you drive and pay for hotel all over again. I'm afraid it won't be much less than your potential Mexico airfare. Good Luck!
