I have an older child shes 7 years, and a new baby whos a little over 1. but i cant remember for the life of me when they stop waking up angry/sad/crying in horror. It so disheartening and stressfull, i know my oldest used to do it too, but cant remmeber when it stopped, she cries at no other time unless she hurts herself, and i am so thankful for that. Its come to the point that when she does wake up happy im shocked.!Im not asking for advice really because there is no reason for her to be scared, she is always near me upon waking, she naps on the couch, or in bed with me. Does anyone remember what age (about) this stops?

What can I do next?

Could you tell her to focus on the positive. Sit down and the two of you make a list of all the things she is grateful for. What does she get from that behavior. Even though its negative attention she gets your attention.
Next time don't make a big deal about it. Act like it doesn't even bother you. Do this every day..eventually I bet she will change her behaviour if she gets no reaction from you.
Good luck.

Maybe your 1 year old is going through "night terrors."
Look it up online.... see if this fits what your child is doing, upon waking or waking because of it.
From this age, is when it can happen.
It is developmental based.
Both my kids, at 1 year old, had 'night terrors.'

all the best,
Susan

My son didn't until he was big enough to get out of bed and immediately go and get his milk from the fridge. Until then I had to thrust his sippy in his mouth. Of course, (come to find), he's hypoglycemic... so even the period of time a nap took... he woke up in a complete sugar crash. But as soon as he'd drunk some milk or eaten something, he was sunshine and rainbows.

For us, happened around 2 1/2- 3ish. (I had wised up and started leaving a snack in his crib - rail down - but he slept in his crib until 3 something)This also heralded the my being awakened by a chubby toddler finger prying one eyelid open at 0h-dark-thirty and being greeted by a giant grin and the phrase " 'Wake now Mommy?!? Oh GOOD, you're 'wake!"

my first though is that she isn't getting enough total sleep and isn't resting deeply enough when she does rest. You would know better though, i think at age 5 or 6 they are supposed to get 11 hours a night, so at age one it's probably more like 14-15 hours a day. could you try a more relaxing bedtime/nap routine, and is she resting in a quiet dark place so that no noises are startling her awake??

ummm....both my kids stopped doing this around 3 months. Have you talked to the pediatrician about this? The crying in a 7 year old would be unexpected. Maybe the grumpiness I could get, but not the crying.

My 3 year old is the grumpiest kid I know (in my little world, hehe) when she wakes up. She still cries when she wakes up and takes her about 10 mins or so to adjust that she is awake. Usually I have a glass of orange juice or milk ready for her when she wakes up which seems to help. The days I don't have anything ready are dreadful. I just let her lay on the couch tho and give her "her time" to wake up. And, as I said, about 10 mins later she is a happy camper and is ready for the day.

Good luck!
