When Will I Get My Period Back?

I had a miscarriage 5 weeks ago. I have had my HCG levels tested and my last results were at 63 about 2 weeks ago. So I am not sure if I am at zero yet but I am sure I pretty close if not already there. I have been having cramping and spotting off and on for the last week. Any idea of when I might get my period back? I can't take much more of this post miscarriage limbo I have been living in. My husband and I want so badly to move forward so we can start TTC again in the near future. But I have to get my period back first. UGH!

Edited to add that I did not have a D&C and miscarried naturally at home. I went back twice since then to make sure everything had been cleared out of my uterus and to have my blood drawn to check HCG levels. The Dr said my levels have dropped of very nicely so they are sure my uterus has emptied.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

After 3 1/2 months I finally got a doctors appointment. My OB/GYN gave me a prescrption to jump start my period. He ran a HCG test and a thyroid test. My HCG was down to zero and my thyroid was normal. So there was no good reason that I was not getting my period. But the medication worked like magic and I started my period a few days after the last pill. Thankfully DH and I are back to TTC now. Hopefully it will not take us another 18 months this time around. Thanks for everyone's help!

My sympathy for what you and your family are experiencing during this difficult time. I had a miscarriage at the end of April last year with a D&C in early May. I did not get my first period until June 10th. My period came about a week after my HCG levels went back to normal. My doctor explained that it can take up to 6 weeks for your HCG levels to return to normal and once they do your period will likely return. Best of luck!

I spotted off and on for about 2-3 weeks or so and conceived the next cycle.

So sorry to hear that you had a miscarriage. I've been down that road more than once, and it's such a hurdle to get past. I'm glad you've been back for a re-check. That was my first thought. I got my period back immediately after a D&C, but it did take a while when I miscarried at home. Don't give up! I have 2 wonderful boys as a reward for our determination!

I can't answer that question, but I can tell you that I conceived 2 of my 3 children without having a period at all. I have a condition called premature ovarion failure. I was occasionally cycling even though I wasn't menustruating. My hormone level numbers were all over the place, too. So, just to let you know, in my experience, I conceived even when all the usual signs weren't there.

I'm very sorry for your loss. I had a miscarriage a year ago. I had to get a D&C and then started my period in about 4 weeks.

As for the cramping and spotting, did you stop bleeding all the way prior to this? If so maybe it's a mini period. I would consult your doctor.
Huggles,
J.

Amy,

I had a loss last June, and had to have a D&C, I didn't have my period until Aug, then I had two. This last Sept we found out that we are going to have #5. I would have your Dr look at you to see if you have expelled all the tissue out. That might be your problem.

Amy,

I have a good friend that went through the same thing. She eventually went to her doctor and took a fertility drug to get her cycle back. She is now expecting her first baby in May.

It might be worth an other call to your doctor.

I had a miscarriage the end of December, and had a d&c the first week of January. I got my period back the first week of February, so it took me about a month. It really varies with everyone, I asked the doctor what to expect and he said about a month but some people it's only 2 weeks and some it could be 8. I'm very sorry for your loss, I know what you are going through right now!

Sorry for your loss. We miscarried our first at 11 weeks in June 06. I did have a D&C because I was having alot of pain and bleeding. My first period came about 6 weeks later then my cycles were very irradic and I did not always ovulate. We were able to conceive again 6 months later and now have a little girl. Best wishes.

I have had 2 miscarriages, both of which I ended up having a D&C for. After the first D&C it took 6 weeks before I got a period and I conceived my first baby 5 months after that. After the second D&C, it again took about 6 weeks to get a period and I'm on my 3rd month of trying to conceive. I'm really hoping I can be pregnant again before my original due date (April) but it will all come with time. As for the cramping and spotting you've been having, I was told after my D&Cs that if the bleeding and spotting hadn't stopped by 14 days, I should call to come in for an appointment; so in your case, I would consider going back to the doctor to make sure everything is ok. I am so sorry for your loss, I can relate and know somewhat what you are going through. My last miscarriage was twins. What always helps me is to think that if I hadn't had my first miscarriage, I wouldn't have my current son- and he is the most precious thing in the world and I can't imagine my life without him now. Good luck to you, feel free to write me if you have questions or just need to chat.

Really sorry for your loss....really sad! But you don't have to have your period back to get pregnant again. Your doctor should have told you that. You can be tested to see if you are cycling again and believe me it happens. When I got pregnant with my second child I never got my period back until after my 3 child was 10 months old. So I had no problem getting pregnant...so don't give up. Ask your doctors advise they are usually right on!!

Hi Amy,

Don't despair. As a Mom who also suffered a miscarriage after one perfect pregnancy I can relate with your situation. I had a D&C in late June and experienced cramping and spotting for several weeks before actually getting my period about 6 weeks after the D&C. A week after that I was pregnant again. Luckily your hormones are still high, so your chances of getting pregnant soon after a miscarriage are high. Hang in there. It's a horrible event, but it happens to 1 in 4 women. You're not alone.

Amy,
I've also had miscarriages, you didn't say but did they do a D&C to clean you out? You can get a very bad infection if there is any tissue possibly left inside. Your body will keep bleeding and spotting to try and get rid of it.
