When to Start Preschool and Recommended Area Preschools

My daughter will be turning 3 come November and I did not sign her up for preschool this year because I didn't want to have her attending for 3 years prior to going into Kindergarten, however, now I'm questioning whether she might have been ready. I know there are a couple of places which will take children in January, should I look into that? And are there any preschools in the Bellingham, Franklin, Medway area that you'd highly recommend even for next September?

Hi K.

I think it is a good idea to sign your daughter up for preschool come January. I truely believe that preschool does ALOT for a child! (I am a former preschool teacher). Obviously every child is different but if you think your daughter would be ready for preschool I would look into it! Begin to talk about it / prepare her for it. But don't over do it with the preparation - this can sometimes cause anxiety in a child. As you may be aware of, many preschools will do 1/2 days and/or offer just a couple of days a week to students. Example: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9am - 12am.
I think this is great because it gives the kids an opportunity to learn to be independant from the parent(s), the child can learn new social skills, take direction/instruction from someone other than their parents (meaning the teachers), and of course to learn some basic school-like knowledge (ABC's counting, etc). Preschool is usually (and should be!) a "play-based" learning environment, so its usually a fun experience for children. However, a heads up - don't be upset with your self if at first your daughter cries at drop-off in the beginning! If its a good preschool the teachers/director will know how to handle this - it's COMPLETELY normal! And usually just a short-lived phase. With that advice, best of luck and I appologize for not knowing of any preschools in the area you mentioned but wanted to give you my opinion of preschools!

IN uxbridge they have a 3yr old and 4yr old program as part of the public school system. 3yr olds go on Tues/Thur for 3 hrs and the 4yr olds attend Mon/Wed/Fri for 3 hrs each day. So 3 really isn't that early. My kids both attended Me Too Preschool in Woonsocket before this and learned alot before heading into Kindergarten. Kim Testa-Fortier is the head teacher. It's only 20 mins from Franklin or Milford on Diamond Hill Rd. Their program is year round and open 7am-530pm so you can start at any time of the yr you want. Good Luck!!

Hi K.,
My son went to Wee Folk Learning Center in the center of Bellingham. He absolutely LOVED it and so did I. Miss Tara and Miss Lisa are so caring and good with the chidren. He did two years of Nursery school before sending him to full day Kindergarten this year. He learned so much from them and it definitely made his transition into Kindergarten so much easier.....for both uf us!!
Hope this helps! C.
