My baby is eight months old. When should I introduce a sippy cup or should I have already done that?

What can I do next?

You should start any time now. My daughter was about 9 months or so when we started. She never (and still doesn't) liked the ones we started with...the Avent Magic Cups. I finally realized that she would drink from a straw (she'd been doing that since about 6 months) so I bought some Munchkin straw sippy cups and those are all she'll drink from by herself. She still won't tip up a regular sippy cup by herself, but I know she'll learn to tip it up eventually.

We started last week with our 6 month old. She took to it fine. My son took a little longer, and we make sure not to force it. Our pediatrician doesn't really like sippys because he says they're pretty much like a bottle, but it's great for travel. Our 6 month old definitely isn't ready for a real cup yet. We did that with our son right before he turned 1 (regular open cup). Since yours is already 9 months, I would say skip the sippy (except for car rides or whatever) and just go to the regular cup. That saves you a step. It will take a few spills, but he'll catch on. You can get those small tumblers from dollar section at Target. Good luck!

my son is almost 5 months and I started introducing it to him right after his 4 month dr. app. He loves it! He even holds it by himself, sometimes he can't quite get it to his mouth but he loves drinking from it.

I tried one on my baby just before he turned 5 months. He loved it! Preferred it to bottles, actually and it's all he uses now- even holds it himself. I heard that if you introduce it before 9 months, it's easier to transition because they don't become as attached to it until after then. My friend's pediatrician told her that.
By the way, our favorite is the Munchkin Mighty Grip. We tried a Nuby, but he preferred the Munchkin and I like it better- the Nuby isn't made as well.

Start introducing it now because at your child's 9 mo check up the dr will ask if you have. I just went to a check up for a little boy that I babysit for with the mom and they asked as well as they asked at my daughter's. When I ran a large daycare center the same thing. The kids were drinking from them by 9 mo.

Skip the sippy cup and start with a covered cup with straw. I started my son when he was six months. It took him a few days to get the hang of it but he does great now. The sippy cup is very much like a bottle that encourages the continued suckle reflex where the straw helps develop other muscles important for eating and talking.

I agree with others as far as age, my little girl was ready about 6 months- we started her off with a cup called the NUK cup, it worked wonders, especially for my little girl who was still not wanting to transition- it was the only cup we were able to get her to use for the first couple of months.. you can buy these at walmart or any other grocery store for about 4$!

Go ahead and introduce it now. Be prepared that he might not like the first one you introduce. The first ones my son liked where the Nuby & those disposable ones. he also liked those 2 handle ones. If he doesn't like the one you give him, don't throw it out. He'll use it eventually.

Hello! My son is now 2 but his pediatrician told me before his year checkup that he would like to see him off of his bottle for the most part and drinking out of a sippy cup. If it's hard to get him transitioned, I think they have sippy cups that are kind of like a bottle nipple, or at least mushy like it! :-)

Hope this helps! :-)
