When to Give up the Diaper Dag?

My kiddos are now 4 and 19 months. We are at a point where we don't need the diaper bag for shorter outings, but aren't ready to be completely without it either. I mainly use the diaper bag for diapers for the little guy, a change of clothes for both kids just in case of an accident, and snacks. For most of our day to day stuff, all I really need to have with are the snacks. How have other Mom's handled this?

What can I do next?

After my first 2 I never used a diaper bag again. I keep spares clothes and diapers in a duffle bag/backpack in all of the vehicles. Then I carry only one diaper. If I needed more or a change of clothes I would just run out and grab them. It was rare though, even with a newborn.

Once they moved to pullups/potty training I switch to a small backpack. For my 3 year old, I have a small kids Lands End backpack that works great. Usually carry a change of clothes/undies, packet of wipes, hand sanitizer, tissues, essentials etc. also usually throw my wallet/phone in there as well so we can just grab and go. As for snacks I usually only carry maybe a couple pouches of fruit snacks, raisins and maybe the squeezable applesauce. This seemed to work well with both my boys.

Get a small backpack. I wish I'd skipped the messenger style bag from the get go. The one we got is way too big for me and the other one still slid off my shoulder til it died. A backpack is the way to do on the go parenting for a long time, IMO. I find it most useful to have a water bottle pocket for sippy cups, but as they get older that's not such a big deal. My DD is almost 4 now and often I just take a kid-sized backpack with a spare change of clothes.

I keep a bag in the car for diapers and change of clothes and always have wipes in the car too. As far as what i carry with me...I call it my "Diaper Bag Mini" It is basically and oversized bag that holds my purse, a ziploc bag with a couple of diapers, underware, and some wipes. A small snack bag, and a few small toys (cars, a small doll) and there is room for either both of their water bottles or one big 32 ounce water bottle for all of us to share. Works out great!

I used to just keep the diaper bag in the car for," just in case" situations. The extra set of clothing, the extra diapers, etc..
But in my purse , I had a diaper and wipes always with me. Snacks were in ziplocks in my purse, or I had our daughter be on charge of them.

It was part of our routine to say, go pick out a snack and a drink, we do not buy snacks at the store, mall, park... (Wherever we were going.., ) and please get me one too!

Earlier than that. 1) I don't carry around snacks. Never have. 2) I put 2 diapers and some wipes in my purse 3) I keep a change of clothes in the car.

This is for day to day errands and such. If we were spending the day at the fair or something, I would put extras in a backpack. I just don't need all that for the grocery store and Target.

Like everybody else has said, we keep back up stuff in both cars. My kids are 3 and 6. We are past diapers, but we still have snacks, water, sunscreen, wipes and a change of clothes in both of our cars.

We stopped when our son was about 4.
I have a nice Lands End diaper bag and I never got rid of it because it's fantastic as a cosmetics bag when traveling.
Doesn't matter if soap/shampoo or anything else spills or leaks - it's easy to wash out.
The bag itself has a life beyond diapers and I'll use it till it falls apart.

I never used a diaper bag after the first week of my DD's life for short outings... I had a little diaper kit that would hold about 4 diapers, wipes, and had a small pocket where I could jam my wallet. lol. (I don't carry a purse either...)

I did keep a change of clothes in the car, sunscreen, or whatever else I might need. I never really took snacks along... If we were going somewhere that a trip to the car wouldn't be convenient, I just tossed whatever I might need into the stroller's under carrier. :)

I never really did the diaper bag. I would carry a diaper or 2, a small container/baggie of wipes & a bottle/snacks in a tote & leave the rest in the car, in case I needed it. I think diaper bags are one of those clever marketing ploys, and are kind of unnecessary as far as baby gear is concerned.

Easy i'm a mom of 4 my newest is 3 months I carried one with my first 9 yrs ago never needed too so from that time I always had one well stocked for necessities only and kept it on the floor where the carseat is if I go to the mall or some place I can't get to my car quicly i'll take it with me but I won't carry it I put it in the basket underneath or use the long straps o put over the handle bar as long as it's not to heavy and won't topple over,I also have a huge clip I use for other bags that I have attached to the stroller it works like a 3rd hand.I also don't allow the kids to bring things with them that I need to hold onto we don't need to were going to the store we'll come back and then they can play, for snacks I can stash in my purse if needed to,also I can toss an extra diaper small wipes in my purse but for the most part everyone uses the bathroom before we leave the house baby is changed and feed to eliminate the restroom it doesn't alwasy happen that way of course. You can down size your diaper bag

Mine are now all grown up and on their own. When they were little and potty trained I would pack a tote bag with a change of clothes and maybe an extra jacket and a small blanket and keep it in he car. If they got dirty or had an accident I was ready with a change of clothes and baby wipes.

Now I always keep sunscreen and Off in my car, I also have a citronella candle in there. I am allergic to mosquito bites and now it's gotten to the point that my eyes get watery and my throat scratchy from a mosquito bite. I also keep OTC allergy pills and pain killers.

I never had one. I had a purse big enough to put a diaper and wipes in and snacks. Any extras could just be kept in the car.

I learned pretty early on that an actual diaper bag was really not necessary. I breastfed so there was no need to carry bottles and formula. Any large bag with a couple of gallon ziplocs was always enough to handle the snacks, diapers, wipes and extra clothes. I went through a period for about two years of carrying nothing but a backpack because I felt like I always needed two free hands lol!

Once we reached that point, I realized that all of that stuff can be stowed in the car/trunk for when needed.
No need to lug a diaper bag. A larger purse will hold some snacks.

As soon as possible :)
Most purses are sufficient for snacks and the such and clothes can be sowed in the car as others have said.

We always kept an emergency kit in the car - change of clothes for each & a thing of wipes, but this was only after both were out of diapers. Prior to that, I'd throw in a few diapers too. Only used a diaper bag when we had bottles and special foods to deal with or if we'd be away from the car for a long period of time.

About that age I started just having a bag that stayed in the car and was stocked with a spare set of clothes. Unless you are gone longer then 2 hours there is not a need for snacks while you are out. I would also just check the diaper before we left the car and then leave the diapers and wipes in the car as well. By that age both kids should be pretty predictable in when diaper changes/potty time occurs.
If you are going to go to the zoo or something similar, just throw the diapers, snacks, etc. into the backpack carrier or stroller.

I still carrying my giant backpack around. My kids are 2.5 and 4. I like having a portable potty with me (my son uses it all the time!), extra clothes, epipen, medicine, first aid kit, coloring pad and crayons. I leave it in the car when I can, but I still lug it around, and most likely will for a while.

I moved on to a backpack and was so glad not to have that diaper bag which only goes on one shoulder, one extra thing to juggle. The pack is great for library books, extra toys (we do a lot of bus rides, so a small magna-doodle or a few books have helped me out in a pinch), an extra set of clothes (because there's always a fountain somewhere!), sunblock, a lunchbag...love it. I use it as a purse, too, so the extra pockets have my advil, extra ladies supplies, small first aid kit, rescue remedy pastilles, etc.

I had an open top "around the house" diaper tote I'd keep diapers, wipes, ointment, etc. in for changes at home, when my guy was potty trained I transitioned into using it for when we're away from home with a change of clothes, snacks, a book and toy and a hoodie if it will get cooler while we're out. He's 3 and starts preschool in about a month so I think we'll be done with the tote then and use his new backpack. Just do what works for you.

I used to keep one or two diapers, snack and a couple wipes in a ziplock bag in my purse. A change of clothes in the car-which came in handy when my four year old decided to go comando with a dress and was going to be banished from the gym childcare center, lol!
