When Should I Take Another Test?

I'm on cycle day 44 (2 weeks late) and no period but negative test result. I don't have any symptoms other than frequent urination, fatigue, and I'm hungry! I took a test when I was a week late and nothing :( also when I go to the restroom I have cervical fluid as if I was still ovulating. When should I take another test? We have been trying for months!

What can I do next?

You could be ovulating now given you have increased cervical fluid. Have sex now and retest in about 2 weeks. Fingers crossed you will be pregnant soon.

If you are two weeks late from when you normally get your period, if you're pregnant I would think you would be testing positive now.

I think the general rule is if you're late and you test, and it's negative, you wait a week and test again. Make sure to test properly.

I get fatigued and ravenous as signs of PMS - so while I hope you are pregnant, you might not be.

Also, the ovulation mucus thing (egg white as I call it) typically happens 2 weeks into the cycle - so you might be ovulating since you're 2 weeks late.

Good luck I hope it happens soon for you

I always feel bad for people like you...not being mean. It's so hard nowadays when you're trying to get pregnant. You want to be pregnant so badly and with technology you can tell almost at conception if you're pregnant or not.

I would rather go back to the days when we waited until we'd missed our second period before making an appointment with the doc to see if we were pregnant. It was so much easier.

Trying to find out if you are pregnant or not is such a chore nowadays. That's why I feel bad for women today. You might just be late so you get your hopes up and time and time again they're dashed.

Please just have some patience and give it time. I think it's a bit early but I would also think if you are pregnant it would show positive. I don't know how sensitive those tests are though.

I'd say if you really want to know then call your local health department and ask them if they do pregnancy testing. Go have one done.

Welcome to mamapedia, B.!!

If you are two weeks late and have always been on-time? I would make an appointment with my OB/GYN to see if there is something wrong or if I am pregnant.

Then I would STOP trying. I know. I know. I know. But after 3 years of TRYING we gave up and started focusing on other things - and guess what?? 3 months later - I was pregnant!! Your body is going into flight or fight mode because you are stressing every change in your body. BREATHE!!

Hi B.,

I'm many years past this so I can't recall all the nuances. What I would suggest is to see your doc and have them do a blood test.

It's okay to be intense about this chapter of your reproductive novel but, I agree with the posts below, that this intensity can easily throw your body off and cause it to behave in confusing ways.

If it were me, I'd be on the phone scheduling an asap appointment and I would try to breathe. Good luck and health with it all!!! :-) S.

I would think a negative test result 2 weeks after you were suppose to start your period means you're not pregnant.
Many things can mess with your period besides being pregnant,
Stress can do it, hormonal imbalance, there's even such a thing as hysterical pregnancy (you have ALL the symptoms but there is no baby).
How old are you?
While it's still possible to get pregnant while you're in peri-menopause, the increasing irregularity of your periods makes things much harder.
On average it take a couple a year of trying in order to get pregnant - so for everyone that gets pregnant soon as they start trying there are plenty of people who take longer.
If you've had no luck after trying for a year (6 months if you're 36 or older), then make an appointment for you both to see a fertility specialist.

Actually it took us 4 YEARS of trying before we finally got pregnant with the help of IVF.
The fertility specialist helped us discover we couldn't get pregnant without help (we both had several issues we had to overcome) and we gave up wasting money on birth control.

I urininate a lot ( drink a don of water), fatigue/insomnia, and I'm eating a brownie. I'm certainly not going to take a pregnancy in a week. You want to be pregnant in two weeks and are disappointed. Wait and see what happens.

Maybe you are seeing cervical fluid, but maybe it's another type of discharge from another cause. There are lots of reasons why women ovulate late too, so it's hard to know if you are late for that reason, or pregnancy, or another issue. If you're 2 weeks late, and you normally are like clockwork, I'd give the gynecologist a call to see what he/she recommends. Often it's just to wait another few weeks, sometimes it's to get a different brand of home pregnancy test (like not buying the expired or substandard ones at the dollar store, sometimes it's coming in for a blood test, sometimes it's to come in and be examined. Meantime, you should take precautions in case you do get or are pregnant (no alcohol, for example, and possible adjustments in any medications).

And, of course, the stress doesn't help any aspect of your life. There are myths about women stressing out and not getting pregnant, and then magically conceiving the minute they relaxed, but that's pretty much been debunked by the medical literature and studies - yes there are some women who got pregnant the second they stopped trying, but of course those are the women who remember the timing! The rest of the women who have battled infertility get kind of tired of being blamed for their own lack of conception, you know?! So I'm speaking generally about stress not helping anything.
