When Should I Call the Doctor?

Hi moms,
Here's my situation- I am on day 41 of my cycle, with no period yet. Since I had my IUD removed, my cycle has been pretty regular- around 35 days give or take a day or two. Home pregnancy tests have all come out negative at this point. I have had typical signs of pms (sore breasts, bloating, moody, etc) for about a week now, but still, no sign of my period. How long do you think I should wait before seeing the gyn about this? I read somewhere that if you haven't had a period in 6 weeks, you should call the doctor to make sure everything is ok. I will be hitting that 6 week mark in a couple of days. I am sure as soon as I make an appointment, I'll start! Thanks for your opinions.

What can I do next?

As long as you are taking your prenatal vitamins each day you are okay. That is all they will really tell you even when you call, and say to wait until you are 7 weeks along before coming in.

Good luck! :) How exciting!

Then by all means make the appt so you will start.

Lets see, this has happened just since you have had it removed? Maybe your body is trying to adjust. At least give the RN a call in the office. If nothing else, it will make you feel better.

Every once and a while even the most regular women are just late.

Still, I would wait a few days and take another test. make sure to do it in the morning when the hormone levels would be the highest. If even the faintest of lines show, it is positive.

For me, the BIGGEST sign of pregnancy was enlarged breasts. I could tell an immediate difference in PMS breasts vs pregnant breasts.

Best of luck to you!!!

Call now and set up an appointment. Even if you're not pregnant, getting checked out will give you peace of mind and/or you will find out if something else may be wrong. Better safe than sorry!

35 is a long cycle, but if it's normal for you then you're only 6 days late. It took me almost a week for the pregnancy test to come back positive the first time I was pregnant, so I would get another test for tomorrow (morning urine is most concentrated so has the most pregnancy hormone in it) *and also* schedule an appointment for the next week or so (which you can always cancel or have as your first prenatal appt, as the case may be).

Until your period starts, act like you're pregnant (no alcohol, take vitamins, etc.).

But it is something you'll want to check out if you're *not* pregnant and you *still* don't have a period.

I would call and talk with a nurse. See what he or she says about it and they might suggest making an appointment. If they say you don't need an appointment yet, but you feel like it would be better then just make one. Like other posts said, it will make you feel better. If you are on day 41 of your cycle and you usually start around day 35 then you are only 6 days late (if I read your post correctly). You body could be adjusting, you could be pregnant and it just hasn't shown up yet, or you could have been pregnant and have had a miscarriage. There could be other complications due to the IUD, but I doubt that would be it if you have had periods since it has been removed. If it were me I would make an appointment (it will take at least a week to get in) and see if anything happens while you are waiting for your appointment. If you have a period or are pregnant then you can cancel your appointment.

Hi Dawn. I had a similar situation a few years ago when I was trying to get pregnant with my son after going off birth control. I would give your doctors office a call and talk to one of their nurses for advise. My doctor had to prescribe provera for me to help me to have a period for a few months. I always felt like I was going to start my period, but nothing would happen. My doctor was able to call this prescription in for me without having to be seen, as long as I had taken a pregnancy test. So as long as you've seen your doctor somewhat recently they may be willing to do that for you. Although, if you are only 6 days late for your period it is possible that you are pregnant, but it's too early to show. I would just give them a call and see what they say. Hope this is helpful, good luck.

Home pregnancy tests do not always work. I took a home pregnancy test and it was negative. I scheduled a complete physical because I was so run down and tired that I thought I must have another tumor. Turns out I was 10 weeks pregnant. Go in for a pregnancy test at the doctor's office.

I may be misunderstanding your question, but as a nurse, I would advise you contact your doctor. If you are able to leave a message for them to contact you that would be a good idea, otherwise, make an appt. You could be pregnant with the tests giving negative results, although, with all three of my children I tested pos within 2 weeks of conception..., and it could just be a normal side effect of your IUD removal...I've never had experience with them other than the actual removal for patients. no training on what they should expect afterward...It could be a number of things, and it may just be that the medication has taken longer to leave your system. The doctor will be the best one to make the diagnosis for you. I wish you the very best of luck and hope it is nothing serious:) (as I'm sure it's not!) Take care!

Doctors will argue with me until the day i die when i tell you what i am about to tell you but IT IS TRUE. With both of my boys i was going on almost 3 months pregnant before testing positive and most of my friends alike. I no lie failed 3 blood tests and countless urine tests. My father is a lab tech who is the HEAD of the chemistry dept and he also let me know the handling of rodents will also cause you to have false negatives. He also works with a woman that can go six months without a positive result. I have doctors including other obgyns other than my own argue with me son up to son down and they all have gotten myd ue dates wrong both of my boys were "early" when they were right on time because they say it is impossible to test negative for so long but trust me it isn't. If you are not pregnant there is this lovely little thing called provera which will start you right up and back down on the path to the lovely cycle. Unless your doc will agree to an ultra sound to completely prove it i dont know ifi would insist on calling one yet. I had one doc ifi had done what he wanted i would've lost my child b/c he didn't believe i was pregnant. I waited 2 months and showed up positive and came back in... gotta have a doc that will believe you and work with you if you are afraid of pregnancy.

Well I'm not sure how an IUD works when it is removed or how it affects your period, but with me...I have PCOS. Before I had my son (my miracle) I would go anywhere from 2 months to 9 without a cycle. I even went 5 years without one. The doctor's finally told me that anything longer than 90 days should be a cause of worry. If after 6 wks and you are still not having a cycle they may not do anything, but test you for pregnancy. Once you reach the 90 day mark, I know my doctor's always gave me provera to "jump start" my cycle. They said that after 90 days we need to "expel" the lining of our uterus if we did not get pregnant. So, I would ask for a blood pregnancy test first then once you have ruled that out completely I'd talk to them about what step to take next. My doc's wouldn't even discuss provera with me unless it was 90+ days. Hope all turns out well and good luck!

I don't want to upset you but I had this happen to me a couple of years ago. It turns out I had a missed AB. That translates to was pregnant for a short period like two weeks and had not quite miscarried yet. I would see your doctor just in case.

Hi Dawn
Better to be safe and make the appt, you can always cancel if you get your period. But...if you don't get your period then you have an appt. They can draw a blood test and find out what your hormone level is to determine if you're pregnant.

Good luck, either way!

I would call the Dr. and make an appointment for a blood test. The doctor can also discuss your symptoms. The stress of not knowing can also make you delay as stress can either speed up a period or delay. Call the doctor. You will feel better.
